diy mods: do you want this?
I'll take that stony silence as "Don't migrate crap!" :)

9 hours later…
11:37 AM
@NiallC. Or you can imply that we're too busy on weekends to spend time in the chat room. But I would have noticed a notification if you tagged me. :)
@NiallC. I vote for no, we don't want it, it's an "invent for me" "hobby project" and is dealing with things that are not typically included with the home when you sell it (other than woodworking projects, that's an easy line to draw and covers a majority of the site scope)

12:08 PM
@bmitch I'd assumed that it was for a full size pump for irrigating a garden. It got some "migrate to diy" close votes so I thought I'd ask.

@NiallC. I assume so as well, but that kind of pump isn't something anyone would normally install on a home
unless we're talking about some 3rd world locations, but I doubt they're on SE.
it's just my opinion, and I tend to be the no-man around here.

12:53 PM
I concur with @BMitch

@BMitch No you aren't

1:05 PM
@NiallC. BTW, I see you decided to run for the election, that finishes my list of expected candidates. Good luck to everyone running!
Except you, @TheEvilGreebo. :)

Did I surprise you?
oh no i see what you mean
I was thinking that I need a campaign slogan
like "A vote for Greebo is a vote for indifference!"

Vote for me or I'll make the elected mod resign in misery?
"Vote for me if you want Bill Gates to send you a check for $5,000"

But I want to campaign honestly
You know, cause I like to be different

1:25 PM
Lol, though technically that second one is honest, you didn't say Bill Gates would actually send a check, only that the voter wants Bill to do that.
The first one is complete BS, under that Evil facade, you're actually nice, we all know it.

1:42 PM
@BMitch LIES! DECEPTION! DON'T LISTEN TO HIM! PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN!

Q: How to fix a racked/sagging exterior wood entry door?

macMy old 3-unit condo has a nice old wooden entry door, with 3 horizontal rails and 2 vertical stiles, with a single large pane of beveled glass as the top panel. The door is very similar to the one shown below. Over time, this door has become racked, i.e. not square; the latch side is sagging b...

How do we get @mike to post his comment as an answer?

@ChrisCudmore Good question, he's an odd user. Some questions he posts multiple answers, other times he edits an answer so many times the system turns it into a wiki, and now I see he posts answers as comments.

@BMitch Is that what he meant by his "how would you deal with me?" suggestion for the questionnaire?

@NiallC. possibly. He's also gotten the auto-flag for deleting a bunch of has answers before. He posts useful stuff, but his style on the site is all over the place.

I wondered if he caused some problems, but how would anyone know if they weren't already a mod? Or stalking watching him closely.

But overall, he's a positive contributer. Just because he's a mod hassle doesn't take away from that.
Maybe he's a StackExchange INC. mole, doing a mod audit.

2:13 PM
In that case, we've failed the audit. For the most part, I let him be crazy because I like his content. Occasionally I give him a heads up that too many edits will set off the auto-wiki.
I would think he's doing it for the attention to get rep, but then he posts answers as comments and deletes answers, so it may be more of an adhd or perfectionist thing.

2:59 PM
Would this be considered an edit to the original question (and closed as a duplicate), or a unique question?

Q: Hot Water Circulating System Problems

SteveMy hot water circulating system was installed in 2006. It has a dedicated return line from all faucets. I've been having trouble lately with the hot water, it turns cold at the faucet when the pump is not on. I just replaced the back flow valve thinking that was causing my problem but I was wro...

Q: Back Flow Valve

SteveI'm still having problems with my hot water circulating system. I did notice that the pump gets hot to the touch when it is running and I wondered, if the back flow valve is installed backwards might that cause the motor to heat up and the hot water to go cold at the faucet when the pump is NOT ...

@BMitch Do you have secret moderator knowledge that you can't talk about that says they're the same person, different accounts?

@steve, now that you've registered your account, see merging accounts so you have access to edit, comment, and accept answers on your own question. — BMitch 2 days ago
I have reason to believe that these are the same person

Hmm, I see I approved the edit that Steve made to Steve's post. I need more coffee!

As for Mike, I wouldn't be surprised if he's also the same: diy.stackexchange.com/users/15835/mike

Q: Hot water in cold water pipe

MikeI recently had a recirculating pump installed in the far end of my system. (The master bathroom is at the far end of the house away from the water heater.) There are two outside faucets that are apparently tied into the cold water line. When I now turn the water on outside to water grass or plant...

but I have no way to know that, details don't match, just similar questions in the same time period.

Wouldn't be the first time a Steve and a Mike have turned out to be the same person, IIRC

Upholstery seems out of scope to me.

Q: How to fix my sofa cushion that is coming apart at one of the seams?

Rice Flour CookiesI have a cheap leather couch that I really enjoy sitting on. The problem is that one of the seams on a cushion is coming apart. I know that my rear-end is heavy, so what's the best way to sew it back together so that it won't come apart again?

@BMitch I concur

Sewing

Proposed Q&A site for professional tailors and amateurs of this field.

Currently in definition.

@ChrisCudmore You got your close vote in with 1 second to spare. :)

@BMitch Community seems to agree with you: meta.diy.stackexchange.com/q/753/22
Dammit, too slow!

@NiallC. Ah, meta, I should visit that site more often.

I added the question to the Sewing def. page.

We need graphics like this for the election:

@BMitch Election?

Project!!!!
so this came in the mail today
to be installed in the corner of the bedroom
on the left, closest to the window, is a 2x4 19.5 inches from the corner of the wall
on the other side closest to the closet, not so much - my closest 2x4 is the actual opening of the closet

I thought the corner of your room came in the mail today.

:)
so my plan:
take the height of the fireplace - cut out the drywall and expose the studs
to fix the no 2x4 problem on the wall with the closet, put in 2 2x4s basically creating a header and footer inside of the wall

@BMitch Taking modular housing to a much more granular level.

cut 2 2x4's at 45 degree angles on their ends and screw into the 2x4 by the window and the 2x4 i'm placing into the wall of the closet
find center of my new corner wall, 2 2x4 vertical and frame in the fireplace
2nd floor bedroom and i have access to the attic - bonus points for running a hard line for power back to the basement and put it on its own 15 amp breaker...
any problems with my logic ?

I assume there's window and door casing in there somewhere?

6:28 PM
the room is unfinished :( just haven't gotten around to it
but i am accounting for those in the placement of the corner 2x4s, yes
the fireplace can be hung on a wall like a picture, but its 9 inches deep - i feel it'll look out of place; understandable that this will cause me drywall work, but the end result will look better i for sure

Check your depth at the edges.

inside the wall installation calls for 4 inches overall depth (can include drywall) - putting it in the corner, i have almost 27 inches wide to play with. i only need 16 inches. so long as i'm in the center, 4 inches is there easily - plus the fact that i'm taking out the drywall

Yeah. looks like you'll have 5.5" at the edges.

i think i'm making a pretty big assumption i actually have a 90 degree corner

Actually, 90 degrees is the only measurement it couldn't possibly be.

6:45 PM
?
i'm assuming cutting the header and footer for the new corner wall, the cuts will be 45 degrees each side - that assumes the wall comes to a 90 degree corner

Golden rule of Renovation: No corner is 90 degrees. Thus the 45 degree stop on your mitre saw is useless.

well yeah haha - especially in this house

7:32 PM
27 minutes to get nominations in.
@waxeagle ???
@JimmyHoffa ???

Sorry, got enough on my plate with C.SE and G.SE, barely have any rep here

@ChrisCudmore If you want a mod at DIY who's only contribution to the usage of tools is succesfully stripping screws in a severe way.

heh, I put a smoker together Friday night, that's pretty much the extent of my DIY in the past several months

7:52 PM
a little something to watch while we wait for any last minute mod submissions
it's safe for work, but I wouldn't watch where laughing would get you in trouble.

> Nominations close in 1 minute.
Eeeek!

@BMitch ...you get in trouble for laughing at work? Rough.

@JimmyHoffa some of you may have more serious jobs than I do, though I doubt it.

So no primary? Straight to Election?

@ChrisCudmore Primary only happens if there are more than 10 (IIRC) candidates

8:03 PM
yeah, fewer than 10 candidates launches straight to the voting

8:17 PM
mod vote to reopen? Is that instant?

@ChrisCudmore Yes

@ChrisCudmore Yup, mod votes to open, close, flag as spam, flag as offensive, maybe a few others, are binding and take effect instantly. You no longer have the ability to just give an opinion on a topic, you have to represent the entire community.

LOL! This made it to the questionnaire
> 10) Please weigh in on the great screw debate, Torx, Robertson, Phillips, or some other screw?

I don't understand why that wouldn't make it in, we had that same question in the last election.

A: 2012 Moderator Election - Town Hall Chat Digest

Tim Stone BMitch asked: What is your preferred screw type? Rory Alsop answered: Badum tschsshshshs - I mean, flat head, obviously :-) BMitch answered: The correct answer is a framing nail gun :) Tester101 answered: Torx.

That was a spur of the moment question from you; this is premeditated

8:28 PM
For what it's worth, most of my questions that I added to the list were taken from other election questions, I have a significant lack of originality.

I don't want to ask what other site you took "What is your preferred screw type?" from!

Sex.stackexchange was closed in Beta. I guess this is the next best place. Although, it's not really DIY.

9:02 PM
@NiallC. isn't a moderator ?!?

Not on this site.

@lsiunsuex I am on Gardening & Landscaping, not here

ahh

I'm a pro tem there, meaning I have to give up my diamond after the site graduates, then ask the community there to let me have it back

Which is a formality -- At least it was here.

9:06 PM
the wife made me buy that plastic window film crap while i was at HD getting stuff for the fireplace - does anyone actually think it works ?

@ChrisCudmore Typically yes, as long as they did a good job picking the Pro Term mods. But there's some logic to it. An elected mod is mod for life, or at least until they resign or the community gets so upset that SE admins step in. The idea being that a mod will have to make some unpopular choices from time to time. The Pro Term is that exception.
@lsiunsuex If your windows are drafty and you don't have good weather stripping, then it works. It's not going to change a single pane window into double pane, but it will help the free flow of air.

they're drafty

Ok. Gotta go. Kids have catechism class tonight. This is what I get for marrying a Pole.

Sometimes I use my mod powers to correct grammar errors on other people's posts in chat, I suspect SE might frown on that, but then we have an english.SE site, so they had it coming.

@BMitch You're kidding!

9:14 PM
no I'm not :)

@BMitch Oh how fun. I'll enjoy this fact very much.

(Note, I'm not an English major, so I'm sure to miss some of the mistakes.)
That and, spellcheck seems to be flaky on LMDE. No red underlines in this chat box, and not in Thunderbird, but they show up in other places.

Sign posted by a friend: "Hunters please use caution when hunting pedestrians using walking trails"
Punctuation could really help with that sign.
I frequently put my punctuation outside of quotes, it's a coding habit. You wouldn't put the semicolon inside the quotes with a string in C like languages.

9:43 PM
i hate it when people keep the { on the same line as the statement - it belongs on the first line after!

@lsiunsuex Good old 1TB style... I hated it for years. Now I like it. Times change, I'm afraid of the day my tastes stop doing so.

10:05 PM
I have to say I'm a fan of the trailing {, it saves extra lines in the code, making it easier to read more code in a single screen. But proper indents are critical for making that style work well.

@BMitch Yeah, well part of my switch came with falling in love with a white-space formatted language so now I read code based on indentation more than anything else
