Q: The Merfolk Salvager's melee attacks don't specify that they're "Weapon Attacks". Is there a reason for this?

svenemaI noticed that both of the two attack actions a Merfolk Salvager (GoS, p.244) has do not specify that they are Weapon attacks: Coral Rapier. Melee Attack: +4 to hit, etc. Inject Toxin (2/Day). Melee Attack: +4 to hit, etc. I've scoured the MM, the MToF, and some others but this seems to be a fi...

Alright so maybe someone can help me and my friend out. Does anyone have a play by chat game that you'd accept extra players for? Our preference would be dnd 5e and discord. We're available in the evenings (EST)

@Laurel I take it you need a DM + possibly one or more players? I could probably spin something up if you're interested

@Shalvenay that sounds great yeah

Might be helpful for people to know the length and frequency of sessions you're looking to commit to, as well as the duration of campaign.

@Laurel yeah, that was something I was going to get to as well -- how long of a thing are you looking for?

Probably for length it would have to fit between 5pm and like some reasonable hour for working people to stop playing and get to sleep. Didn't think about duration yet

1:38 AM
@Laurel we have a game on this site, but I can't say we have space without checking what the DM/other players are comfortable with
@Laurel what time zone?

EST, which is eastern US
It's worth mentioning that my friend has the rep to chat

@Laurel I think, even if the GM/players said yes that's too late for us currently

Yeah aren't you in the uk?
Anyway me and my friend are both kinda nervous to do this because the last time we tried to do a lfg, it ended really poorly. Fingers crossed for this to work out

Yeah I am, but we've got a mix of time zones earlier and later than that

Can you describe the kinds of challenges you ran into the last time, without gossiping? Like, was it a mismatch in expectations about the tone or content, or did some of the group disregard the safety and comfort of others, or...?
Because there are tools and techniques that can help facilitate conversations to mitigate a lot of those sorts of issues, and I know a lot of the people here are okay with using them.

1:56 AM
@BESW We were playing with two other people who knew each other and I was really nervous, which made me especially slow typing and that was why the one player rage quit in a very mean way

@Laurel yeah, the bigger deal is duration of the campaign vs. length of sessions (I'm in US CST)
@Laurel oof :/

Oh gosh that's awful. Calibrating expectations about that sort of thing doesn't always occur to people who are used to playing with people who have the same capacities as themselves --or are able/willing to fake it for the length of a session-- but it's really crucial to group functioning.

Like it wasn't even an entire session :/ and we never never heard from them again except a very brief apology from the rage quitter's friend

eek

I think that playing in roll20 didn't help me very much because I don't like its messaging system as much as discord

1:59 AM
@BESW no kidding :/

Sounds like you kinda dodged a bullet by losing so little time before you found out the sort of situation you were in.

Yeah

@Laurel ok wow

In my experience every table needs some kind of expectation-setting conversation up front, with explicit space for the conversation to continue through the length of the game as needed. Where I haven't had that and the game's gone well anyway, looking back I can see that we'd done it in other ways like hanging out a lot outside of game time and talking freely about what we like and don't like about the game in that space.

@Laurel I'll be honest, sounds like you both dodged an absolute bullet there

2:05 AM
That's specifically the sort of thing I thought Storium might be good at helping avoid, though Storium had its own struggles.

anyway @Laurel -- I suppose on the "duration of the whole thing" were you thinking of a full campaign or something more short-form or episodic?

@Shalvenay a campaign at least a couple of months long, I'd say

@Laurel got it, it's not something I've done a ton of, but it's something that I could give a shot at. would you and your friend be content with just me DMing for you two, or would you want something with other players as well?

2:20 AM
@Shalvenay yeah, that would work, though it would be more fun with more players

@Laurel yeah, I might see about inviting one other but scheduling as always is a limiting factor here. would you rather discuss theme/tone/... stuff here or would you prefer we take that to a Discord?

Oh btw my friend is here @Hikari

Hello

@Hikari Hullo!

@Hikari hey there

Greetings

@Laurel but the temptation is always there 👀

Yeah and at least I can still threaten to superping people
@Shalvenay just need to find a way to exchange discords at some point without putting mine in the public chat :p

@Laurel I take it you have a discord server we can use for this?

@Shalvenay didn't really expect to get a response this fast lol but I'm making Hikari make one

2:31 AM
if nothing else, perhaps @BESW would be willing to drop a short-time invite link to their discord here?
@Laurel ah. if you folks are standing up your own server, the one ingredient we'll need that Discord doesn't provide is a dicebot

We use avrae

@Laurel ah, I should be able to adapt to whatever you're using provided it runs off some flavor of chat command
ah, Discord lets you make single-use invite links btw

@Laurel 👀

I don't know how to do single use invites
Oh I figured it out

@Hikari ah. when you click the "Invite People" menu item, you should have a little blue link at the bottom that says "Customize invite link"
ah, cool

2:36 AM
Right, should I just send it here?

@Hikari yeah

Ok, here you go
https://discord.gg/3gXrwy7e

@Hikari got it

@Laurel Psst. It seems like you're already making plans, but in the event that you wanted to chat with my and @AncientSwordRage's campaign group, I can invite you two to our Discord :)

What's the best way to make Amiri (Pathfinder iconic barbarian) in 5e?
notably, she wields a large bastard sword.

Recall in pathfinder, you could wield an oversized weapon that falls into a valid category, by taking -2 to hit, per step.

So, a bastard sword is a 1handed-ish weapon. Make it large and hold it in two hands. done.

And because of some goofiness with how damage scales with size, you end up with 1d10 -> 2d8, rather than the standard 2d6 of a greatsword.
Ideally, I'd like a semi viable way to make that concept work in 5e, but if not, I'll just wield a greatsword and say that the top part of the blade is broken enough that it's effectively a regular sized greatsword.

4:58 PM
p. 278 of DMG says you can wield oversized weapons (one size category larger) at disadvantage. a Medium creature wielding a Large weapon doubles the weapon dice

"a medium creature wielding a large weapon doubles damage dice" does it tho?

granted this being in the DMG likely means that it's intended for use by NPCs
@ThomasMarkov well, specifically, it says that Large weapons have double weapon damage dice of their Medium counterparts

1
A: Statistically, when is wielding a Large weapon worth it for a Medium-sized character?

Thomas MarkovDM guidance for building custom monsters has nothing to do with player characters. The intro to the section you quote says: The Monster Manual contains hundreds of ready-to-play monsters, but it doesn’t include every monster that you can imagine. Part of the D&D experience is the simple joy of c...

so whether or not it's a Medium creature or a Large creature wielding a Large weapon, it's double the weapon damage dice of the Medium equivalent weapon
@ThomasMarkov double weapon damage dice != double damage

That question states: "In DnD 5e, according to p. 278 of the Dungeon Master's Guide, if a Medium-sized character uses a Large weapon, its damage dice are doubled, but it causes them to suffer Disadvantage on their attack roll."

5:02 PM
yes, that's what i said?

But this is just not true, as I said in my answer, "The Dungeon Master's Guide does not say this at all. It provides guidance you can use when designing stat blocks of your own, but it contains no player-facing rules as you suggest."

i also said that?

uhh idk anymore im confused lol

3 mins ago, by Yuuki
granted this being in the DMG likely means that it's intended for use by NPCs

@Yuuki Ah yes

5:05 PM
based on some surface-level searching, a number of people have said that using this framework as a player has ended up feeling unbalanced
so the game just isn't designed to handle players using oversized weapons mechanically

@Yuuki When you have a way to offset the disadvantage, the damage boost is substantial.

@ThomasMarkov If you're fighting in the dark (or any situation where you can't see your attacker), you might as well use an oversized weapon - disadvantage anyway

Q: Should trusted close/reopen voters and reviewers have their votes weighted more than others'?

CatijaIn Q3 2021 I finalized my research around three vote close/reopen and I was pretty happy with the outcomes - as were the sites that got to test it out. While the benefit to each site was different, the most important thing was that there were no negative impacts of that test and all of the sites ...

MosheAccording to balpha, the SE chat sites may have individual Easter eggs, depending on the site. If you find them, please post. Because it's so easy to make this stuff up, a screenshot as proof would be nice. (Although Photoshop isn't that hard either...)

@ThomasMarkov I initially thought so too, but there might be merit to quicker escalation.
At least it is reassuring that the current intent is to make it an opt-in feature.
A really interesting feature is that it values recent participation.
Yeah, I should have been more clear, I'd likely be considering recent participation, so either votes cast in the last n days or the most recent n votes rather than looking at someone's all-time stats. A good catch, though. :) — Catija ♦ 30 mins ago

Jumping back to @ThomasMarkov's question; What kind of best/Is there any specific context for that question?

ASR posted a question about some James Bond films on tv&movies
So I wanted to know which actor he thought was the best James Bond
(there is an obvious and factually correct answer)

@ThomasMarkov James, obviously. He's the sovereign's glue that holds the world together.

@ThomasMarkov David Niven?

@ThomasMarkov the obvious and factually correct answer is "the first one you liked," no?

@nitsua60 Coincidentally, that's also the right answer for Doctor Who.

@JoelHarmon Does that also have the carve-out for people who answer "George Lazenby"?

Q: Is the title of The Man With the Golden Gun deliberately deceptive, or is something missing from the adaptation?

AncientSwordRageIn 'Goldfinger' Auric Goldfinger is last seen shooting at James Bond with a golden pistol. However, the villain in the later film, 'The Man With the Golden Gun', is not Goldfinger as might have been implied by the title. I don't know if the title was deliberately, and misleadingly, hinting that G...

@V2Blast that is correct
Inspired by
in The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, yesterday, by b_jonas
Ok, let me get this clear. One of the James Bond films is called The man with the golden gun. That film is later than the other James Bond film Goldfinger, which ends in a climatic scene in an airplane where the titular villain tries to shoot Bond with a golden pistol. Why does The man with the golden gun have this boring title then?

Because IPs like Star Wars and the MCU have taught audiences to have an unhealthy and unrealistic expectation of franchise curation?
