@G.Moylan When watching that, YouTube suggested this one to me... same style, different movie youtu.be/JImcvtJzIK8

1:02 AM
Truly, the 2000s were a different era.
Back then we begged authors not to sue us for writing fanfiction. Now we beg Disney not to demonetize our vlogs.

1:55 AM
@Adeptus man, curse of the black pearl was an excellent movie
honestly, i liked the entire trilogy even though a lot of people said dead man's chest and at world's end were garbage

Q: What rarity would a 15ft reach glaive magic item be?

ConvergentI'm thinking of making a homebrew magic glaive with a 15ft reach rather than 10ft. What rarity should this be? Also, would making this attunement or non attunement change its rarity? For example, you need to attune to it to learn how to handle the extra weight of the glaive.

2:57 AM
@Yuuki They were fun to take my kids to. What more do I ask of Disney? Nothing. :) I expect very little from them and am rarely disappointed.
I also don't do movies much anymore ...

3:20 AM
I think the ones I have seen were at least decent movies
I do think the series is,... to be polite a little played out

3:31 AM
the problem is the focus moved increasingly toward jack sparrow. jack's a character that works best as a secondary or supporting character. part of the appeal of the first movie was that jack being a secondary character instead of the protagonist meant that there was legitimate tension on whether or not he'd betray orlando bloom at any given moment
when jack's the protagonist, you know what his intentions are
i mean, there are a lot of other problems as the series went on, but that was one of the major narrative ones, imo

4:10 AM
yeah
but I doubt they entirely intend to fix some of that
although I could be wrong

i don't even know what they're intending to do with the series if anything
wouldn't be surprised if they just left it alone for the time being

I mean at this point I think they have
it kinda looked like they were going to try to reboot it at some point

i can't imagine what they'd change with a reboot and i'm not really sure they could capture the same lightning in a bottle as the first film
in fact, i'd go out on a limb and say with about 99% certainty they wouldn't be able to reboot the first film satisfactorily
and unlike other reboots, i don't think there's significant changes they could make with regards to improvements in CGI technology. it all holds up pretty well to this day, especially davy jones

well maybe not a reboot
maybe the right term is pass the torch
because the last one had new young people show up
or at least the last I saw? I think it was also the last made so far
but I might be wrong

i have it but i haven't watched it. a little trepidatious given general reactions.

1 hour later…
5:34 AM
@Yuuki I thought it was pretty good. No worse than the previous one or two.

@Yuuki I don't think it's horrible as long as you like the franchise to begin with, but I do think it is the worst one
at least personally

Q: Is there an ability, spell or magic item that lets you detect an opponent's intelligence stat?

Sam LacrumbI am designing a character who wants to be the most intelligent creature in the world. He collects magic items to increase his intelligence. But he also plans to kill anyone smarter than he is. Is there a way in D&D 5e to detect how smart another creature is, or at least if it is smarter than the...

9:46 AM
@trogdor it sounds like that was the intention

yes that is what it kinda seemed like the intention was

10:06 AM
I've not see world's end or the films after, but it feels like they're shifting to start a jungle cruise franchise

10:34 AM
I did a question, but it's a little bit listy... Hope that's ok with folks
I made it as dndbeyond is a nightmare to search through

@Medix2 dupe closure looks good.

Q: Can a Dhampir echo knight's echo use vampiric bite to restore hit points to the echo knight?

K.L.R.The Vampiric Bite ability of the Dhampir race can be used as an attack, so RAW the Dhampir Echo Knight's Echo can bite. But would this be able to Empower the Echo Knight?

@AncientSwordRage If you're doing this to figure out what ability to use with hex, don't forget ability checks are done outside of spells, too.
And I generally find it's better to coordinate that choice with the party based on what they can do

@NautArch yeah, that's true!
@NautArch a lot of the spells listed won't be available to my character, so I will have to coordinate naturally
I thought it would be more manageable to list all the spells, not everything and the kitchen sink in one question
Having it listed also helps me remember it has nothing to do with saving throws 😅

I usually picked charisma so I could transfer the hex to someone out of combat and improve my chances to convince someone of something.
But the full list isn't as helpful as knowing what your party has.
I'm also coming from a place of not liking list questions. You could do this, but you're asking us to do it instead.

@NautArch I mean, I self answered and made it a CW, so I have done this in a way?
@NautArch knowing what the players have is one thing, but being able to check it off against a list is another

11:54 AM
@NautArch do you mean wisdom?

Yes, yes I do :)

12:07 PM
@AncientSwordRage It can be
\o good morning everyone, I am pondering how to fit Gaernoo into my Brother's world. (A being from the Far Beyond linked to a Candlekeep mod that I had to heavily massage to fit into a non FR game). Rather than the link being a GOO style warlock, the link is a chaotic evil mage, who escaped the party (but they are relentlessly tracking him down).

@KorvinStarmast I wouldnt mind a massage and a place in your game tbh.

@ThomasMarkov I'd love to have you, but we already have seven players, it's getting unwieldy.

@KorvinStarmast Just the massage then?

And an eighth would play if RL weren't being such a bear to him.
@ThomasMarkov Well, for a brain massage, maybe think through how to GOO a wizard?

12:14 PM
Great Old One Warlock

What do you mean by GOOing a wizard then?

The party defeated an Oblex a couple of sessions ago; it too is a far realm aberration kind of thing. I kept getting mental triggers to Obelix (From the Asterix comics) and Bartholemew and the Ooblek a kids book ...
@ThomasMarkov Converting a Mage NPC into an NPC warlock that is about CR 5 or 6. The Archfey Warlock in Volo's is CR 4 IIRC ...

He can cast 5th level spells, and has EB, and a few other neat features, and can summon a pretty strong Fey to help him.
(Warlock of the Archfey)
But the current situation is not fey themed, it is "summoning grells and other aberrations from the Far Beyond" as part of the cult's activities ... which is why the PCs are after him in the first place. That whole human sacrifice thing has got even the murder hobo monk very upset with this wizard ... whom I need to turn into a Warlock of the GOO style. I've thought myself in to a corner on the drive to work, and am stuck

Question for the room: Who is the most handsome hobbit in the Fellowship?

12:20 PM
@ThomasMarkov My wife says "Pippin is the cutest" but "Merry is the most handsome" and Frodo is "almost cute" - but for handsome she as all about Faramir.
She's not a fan of that whole "stubble" thing Aragorn had going in the movies

@KorvinStarmast Psssshhhhh Faramir? He was too pretty. Boromir was way more handsome.
Also Samwise is the handsomest hobbit and you'll never change my mind.

@ThomasMarkov The Missus liked Sean Bean better in the Sharpe's Rifles series; Samwise didn't even register for her or my daughter. shrugs I am at a loss on how the handsome/taste thing works.
@ThomasMarkov Her other observation was, in movie 2, that Eomer "needed more screen time!"

@ThomasMarkov gollum

@KorvinStarmast The only Karl Urban character I've ever liked was Vaako in Chronicles of Riddick.
@NautArch Wasnt he technically not a hobbit

@ThomasMarkov Didn't like him in Almost Human?
@ThomasMarkov I had thought he was originally.
but my memory may be faulty.

12:41 PM
@NautArch looked it up, he was a different sub race of hobbit from the shire hobbits

@ThomasMarkov Ah, new content :P

@ThomasMarkov He's not a shire hobbit
Ah, I've been sniped XD

@ThomasMarkov yes, a Stoor from the Gladden Fields area. IIRC, that is from the Appendices in RoTK.

I really like this question

@NautArch I'm wondering if "can I squeeze between two walls of fire" is the same as "can I squeeze between two elves"

12:47 PM
@Medix2 Or if it's between two walls.
But really, it's between to magical effects and the walls aren't solid.
I think it's going to be up to a DM to decide, but this DM would rule that they burn. You have to squeeze against something.

Which is why I think it should be answered separately from real walls. You have to squeeze to go between physical walls
But I'm unsure if elves are sufficiently different from magical fire walls, but since I'm unsure, they probably are

I can't think of any type of squeezing that doesn't touch something.
Like, I don't think you say "She squeezed through the laser grid."

I think I've seen that movie, and it didn't end well.

@NautArch Large sized horses are not five feet wide
Despite being large, I have always ruled that horses can move through five foot wide spaces without squeezing.
Since a medium sized Goliath is conceivably as wide as a horse.

@ThomasMarkov Also true, and that creates big issues in 5e for dealing with the written rule that controlled spaces and creature size are one thing, actual dimensions are another. But then the rules don't really handle that.
But that's a really good point and I'd likely adjust my ruling :)

1:02 PM
I suppose this is also an issue with 5e's tendency to use words as simultaneously jargon and vernacular.

But then that leads to why can't the PCs just cast them close enough so that it can't?
TotM vs grids.

It makes total sense for a horse to be dramatically inconvenienced in a five-foot-wide hallway, in ways that the squeezing rules would be decent at approximating.
But it's also true that a horse would not be literally squeezed in such a situation.

True and true.

Hafthór Björnsson is a good model for your stereotypical Goliath. He’s approximately horse sized.

Ha!

1:04 PM
@NautArch Yeah, all it does is ensure that the large creature is seared on both sides, ensuring that the juices are sealed in. 😊

This does not feel like an ambiguity made with deliberate intent.

Basically, if you want a good idea about the size of male goliaths, just check out the World’s Strongest Man competitors.

@ThomasMarkov And make them a little taller

@BESW that's a good point
@ThomasMarkov technically they're the size of Yao Ming, because height/weight charts are terrible in d&d

@KorvinStarmast yeah, was just about to say. Brian Shaw and Thor are the closest in height, but they’ve all got the approximate build.
@NautArch My next character will 100% be a barbarian modeled after Eddie Hall.

1:08 PM
@ThomasMarkov that sounds awesome

A: Is Goliath weight range reasonable?

Vladislav MartinUPDATE: The Skinny: If you'd like, you should definitely consider allowing for characters to gain weight dynamically! This could even potentially provide a relevant in-character explanation for increases to the character's STR modifier that they may earn through leveling. Shorter Answer: ...

@AncientSwordRage Yao Ming with a bit more muscle, or Lebron James a few inches taller and growing in the same proportions. (A lot of folks, when Lebron began to play in the NBA), observed that with his size, speed, and all around athleticism he'd be an amazing tight end in the NFL. Lebron was smart to ignore them. more money in the NBA. 👍

@KorvinStarmast Whole lot safer, too.

@NautArch yeah, longer career hence more commercial endorsements hence even more money.

But either way, if the goal of the walls of fire was to make a bulette panini make a magical George Foreman grill, then that's what it's going to do.

@AncientSwordRage Yeah, the art definitely does not match the numbers.

1:19 PM
@ThomasMarkov I think the numbers should change tbh

Yeah.

More like the BFG.

As a purely intellectual exercise I was trying to figure out a better way of generating height and weight for characters

@NautArch Is that considered seafood, or a surf and turf? (Bulette is also called Landshark).

Here is a picture of Brian Shaw next to his wife who is herself of above average stature at nearly 6 feet tall. (content warning: gigantic hulking shirtless man)

1:22 PM
@KorvinStarmast candygram!

@ThomasMarkov Wow, that's one big guy.
@NautArch and not for Mr Mongo.

Add 6 inches to Brian and take 100 pounds of the top and you get the Goliaths numbers, but the result would look pretty goofy in reality.

What's he weigh? 270?

how does Thor / The Mountain stack up against Brian Shaw?

@G.Moylan Hemsworth is a bit shorter, and not quite as massive. Not sure about the Mountain, he's a very large man

1:26 PM
yeah by Thor I meant Hafþór

@G.Moylan Very similar in stature and build.
Shaw has more WSM titles though.
@G.Moylan Here is a funny picture of the two of them next to an average sized woman.
At their largest, Shaw was 6'8" 440, Thor was 6'9" 450. So pretty comparable.
Thor is down around 340 cuz hes doing some boxing now

The photo floating around of Thor and his wife is also pretty funny
photos. I guess they're photographed together pretty frequently

2:24 PM
My goodness, those are some large humans.

Q: Unpinning the accepted answer from the top of the list of answers

Nicolas ChabanovskyToday we changed the way we sort answers on Stack Overflow. We no longer pin the accepted answer (with the green checkmark) to the top of the list of answers. By default, we now sort strictly by votes (descending order by highest score), and the accepted answer's order in the list is based on its...

neat

> Would you like to have the accepted answer unpinned on your site?

We can change the way the engine sorts answers in site settings. We would like to hear from you all if it is something you want to see on your site. (Please let me acknowledge in advance that we will not be able to run a test on each site.)

Currently we are planning to move forward with one of two scenarios, based on your feedback:

1. Unpin the accepted answer on all SE sites by default and pin it back on a few sites that ask us to do so.

Q: Do downtime activities that take longer than a day have to be performed on consecutive days?

Yopi LapiFor example, let's say a character wants to retrain a feat, it will take him 7 days (a week) of downtime. Do these 7 days have to be consecutive, or can they be split? For example, could he retrain for 3 days, then go adventuring for 2 days, and then finish the last 4 days of retraining? The same...

And there it is.

6:05 PM
@V2Blast Pinning answers is kind of tack-y, don't you think?

@NautArch because my teammates wouldn't necessarily need to worry about concentration, that means I don't think I need to worry about adding restrictions to the question? Unless you mean listing all the spells they could learn in the future?
I don't think that last one makes sense because I don't know what spells are that class specific
@AncientSwordRage Do you want to add that requirement to the question? — NautArch 7 mins ago
^ context in case you come across this much later

@AncientSwordRage Okay. Wasn't sure if the comment above was something you really wanted. Just that the more we narrow for your need, the better.

@NautArch I appreciate that

6:59 PM
You can probably remove the Reddit thread statement as the list has now changed.

GcL
@ThomasMarkov That's interesting. At first, it looks pretty underwhelming. Giving up a point of INT to shoot up close.

@GcL Yeah, my shot from the hip is that it is a bit underwhelming, but would not be the most underwhelming feat on the list of official feats.
@Medix2 On second glance, that was a pretty complex sentence and could use some trimming or splitting.

GcL
@ThomasMarkov True. It doesn't strike me as super wand-y though. I'm looking through the list trying to come up with a benefit while wielding a wand that would be a neat trade to add to that feat.
Getting an action cantrip as a bonus action is a bit too OP. Getting attacks of opp is stepping on the toes of Warcaster.

@GcL @ThomasMarkov Maybe give it the pocket dimension ability that the warlock has?

GcL
@NautArch Like a pact weapon? That's clever.

7:13 PM
@GcL Quick-draw :)

@GcL It needs something to help it along thematically for sure.

I'm not sure the new cantrip makes sense at all.
I think you could swap that for being able to summon it.
Although I'd like to add a bonus action 'attack' from it. Make it more like crossbow expert.
I'd say you'd need to pick one elemental damage type. But you can pick it.
Give it a d6.
@TheOracle @ThomasMarkov Are you planning on taking ideas/improvements in comments, chat, and possibly from other answers to make the Answer To Rule Them All?

Give it a single magic missile dart as a bonus action.
@NautArch All requests must be submitted in print to the Offices of Markov, Markov, and Markov, and allow up to six weeks processing.
2

@ThomasMarkov Guaranteed damage? Yowza.
Maybe up to your INT modifier per long rest?

@NautArch A guaranteed avg 3.5 damage at the cost of a bonus action? I wouldn't call it Yowza.

7:22 PM
@ThomasMarkov That...isn't false.

Not quite meh, maybe somewhere in the realm of "oh neat"

Do you prefer that over the elemental d6 attack?

I dont have a preference, Im just keeping the unsupported idea generation where it belongs: in chat.
:P

Well, darnit. I have a preference!
And I shall tilt at this windmill!

@NautArch Actual answer, yeah wherever works.

7:27 PM
@ThomasMarkov Also, it's balanced. Just could (should?) be a bit more.

Yeah. It's somewhere between "feat you would only take for a meme build" and "feat that gets you excited about eschewing a full ASI", which is basically the feat definition of balanced.

GcL
I think I would add a shoot from the hip with that cantrip. Can be cast as a bonus action at disadvantage.

@GcL That's pretty cool. Kind of a sharpshooter effect.
But quickdraw.

GcL
Because wandslingers to me are the spaghetti western cowboys of Eberron to me. Just roaming Q'Barra and Lhazzar.

A wandslinger would absolutely be willing to take that shot.

GcL
7:38 PM
And say something about never telling them the odds.

And since it's a cantrip, if you hit on both, that damage will add up.
Are there any for artificers that add modifiers?

GcL
Would probably have to limit it to a single attack roll though. I recall warlocks get stupid numbers of eldritch bolts later in levels.

@GcL Oof. Yeah.

GcL
Eldritch glass cannon is a viable warlock build with that tomb of ice shield thing to soak any overwhelming damage.

@GcL Eldritch is a viable warlock build :P

GcL
7:41 PM
Maybe I'll float the wandslinger thing to my Eberron group as a mini-series for some prebuilt cowboy characters.

My favorite build is still my hexblade/battlemaster.
Got it 5/3 and was loving it.

@NautArch Um excuse me, hexblade multiclassing is illegal. Pretty sure it's in the rules.

GcL
I have a memory of Keith Baker having an NPC build where staffs were the riffles and wands were the six shooters.

@ThomasMarkov SINGLE LEVEL HEXBLADE!!!1111!!!

GcL
Aren't you obligated to take six levels of hexblade?

7:42 PM
Was going back hexblade to the end after that 3 battlemaster (which was supposed to be 13, i think)

Psshh, what scrub takes 1 level? Everyone knows it takes two to tango (with eldritch gods).

But yeah, even the warlock 2 dip is cheesy. Did it with my bard, tho. No regerts.
This was more that I realized the hexblade was kinda meh. Adding in the short rest recoverable maneuvers made it a battlefield leading machine.

GcL
@ThomasMarkov I thought that's in relation to the number of tentacles: "it takes cube root of negative two tentacles to tango with eldritch powers"
@NautArch Great weapon fighting with that add a d8 to your attack roll has been surprisingly effective in my current campaign.

@GcL I went for big AC. Heavy armor and shield.

@ThomasMarkov you know where to send it if you want another set of eyes/editorial blue pencil stuff ...

7:49 PM
@KorvinStarmast it's up, go gander at it
@KorvinStarmast I reneged on my promise not to include any policies.
> I know I included a disclaimer that this post would not include any policies, but maybe it should say it does not create any new policies. This is just the natural application of the general Stack Exchange policy that answers which do not answer the question are deleted. If a question turns out to be about D&D 3.5, and your answer assumes it is about D&D 5e, your answer is not an answer to the question and should be deleted.

GcL
@ThomasMarkov So your policy of not including policies was meta-violated?

@GcL Isn't that part of the Be Nice policy?

I think I can weasel-word my way out of it: it's guidance on applying an existing general Stack policy.
Also, should we feature the post?

GcL
@NautArch This "nice policy" is about being nice in the precise and accurate way, right?
@ThomasMarkov Isn't that just a subset of the more general rule that all answers should eventually be deleted as their just dupes of 42 ?

8:05 PM
@ThomasMarkov If I may quote the villain in Dirty Harry "My, that's a big one!" 😮
I'll need some coffee and time to mull over that. Looks like a good framework.

@GcL nope, that is the one about patience.

8:17 PM
@Medix2 that is a highly questionable edit, maybe you do need to open that meta about enforcing passive language.

@Akixkisu What is it we used to say... shots fired
Haven't seen @Someone_Evil today, can anyone help me out here?

@Akixkisu @Medix2 I think both edits are fine. Passive voice or not, I actually agree that including being makes it more 'readable', if not necessarily correct.

Am I just misunderstanding?

No war yet. A switcharoo and a discussion.
Should that be a semicolon after 'readable'?

"things need to be pointed out where" is returning an error in my brain.

8:22 PM
@ThomasMarkov looks like an edit artefact.
(Not in the history, but during the writing process)
The meaning is up to guess work.

GcL
@ThomasMarkov Stealth link to meta. It's like being rick rolled but without any of the humor.

@GcL Did he get you?

I can't parse the sentence.

GcL
@NautArch Didn't even hover over to check the link. Just clicked away. Worse yet, didn't realize where I was. Actually hit page up... like a masochist.

Or rather, the clause.

8:27 PM
@GcL Got ya!

where "necessary"? Is my best guess.

GcL
Although, I did read a bit about rocks banging together and thought, "that is actually a way to get baby rocks'
3

Get baby rocks and move on - that is a takeaway.
And much more affordable than buying cats.

@Akixkisu Gravel, that's my takeaway. :)

GcL
@KorvinStarmast I only gravel if I absolutely have to. There are far less demeaning ways to get the walkway you want.

8:34 PM
Better not store that in your shoes.
It seems like the main-site server loading hiccups continue.

GcL
@Akixkisu You think that's bad? Wait till it starts teething.

@GcL until then I'll be untethered.

@Someone_Evil do we want to feature the guidance Q&A?

Q: Can Large characters squeeze through a 5ft corridor between Walls of Fire?

CypherThe rules for Squeezing on page 192 of the PHB state: Squeezing into Smaller Spaces A creature can squeeze through a space that is large enough for a creature one size smaller than it. Thus, a Large creature can squeeze through a passage that's only 5 feet wide. Using these rules, can an Ogre s...

8:57 PM
@Akixkisu I literally cannot read the sentence "please specify the game played" correctly. I'd have to force it to be past tense or something

What if you remove "played" entirely?

Like "please specify your played system", to an extent, works, but wow it takes a lot more effort on my part than "please specify the system you're playing "
Yeah, "we close question that do not specify the(ir) system" works

Tbf, there is a lot more that we could do there - my edit only fixed grammar, not the style.

@Medix2 Which sentence exactly?

@ThomasMarkov "In the past, we have, as a matter of policy, closed questions that do not specify the game system [being] played, and instead, have waited for the author to state the system/s for us."
Which was initially: "In the past, we have, as a matter of policy, closed questions which do not specify the game system being played, and instead, have waited for the author to confirm ththis for us."

9:16 PM
Yeah, that’s quite the sentence. I’ll work on it.

@ThomasMarkov When you do that, you might want to make explicit who intends this guidance to succeed the former one.
(We (the community), I hope)

@Akixkisu “everyone who upvoted the post where I said we should make this post” :P

@ThomasMarkov So, we (tacit approval of the upvoter) ;)

@Medix2 @Akixkisu Okay try it now
@Akixkisu Suggestion for changing that statement of intent?

9:33 PM
"We propose this Q&A to serve as the successor to the now obsolete Q&A."

"We intend this Q&A to succeed the now obsolete Q&A."

Oh, so just change it to propose until we’re done and then change it to “This Q&A succeeds this now obsolete Q&A”?

Yes
And if you mind to indulge me, you could change "In the past, questions lacking a system tag or an explicit system statement would be closed under the “Don’t Guess the System” policy." to "In the past, we would close questions lacking a system tag or an explicit system statement according to the “Don’t Guess the System” policy." - but there is no need :D

@Akixkisu yeah I like that better.

https://rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/191385/do-downtime-activities-that-take-longer-than-a-day-have-to-be-performed-on-conse

I think there is an important distinction between the PHB saying "a week" vs 7 days. Does a week imply that it's continuous? Was that choice of words deliberate?

@Turbo a week is ten days

9:42 PM
also true

A business week is five days.

well wouldn't the phb say a tenday?

@Turbo "You can spend a week of downtime" is the exact phrasing.
AH mybad.
That is p2
disregard.

Yeah the OPs question is whether it needs to be continuous, wondering if the PHB saying "a week" vs "7 days" is an important distinction on whether or not it must be continuous

Golarion doesn't use tendays, it uses 7 day weeks, to clarify.

9:47 PM
Ah, I only know 5e but this question caught my attention because I like arguing semantics

@Turbo that depends on what a week is.

Take this with a grain of salt, but from what I remember, p2 makes no clear distinction, but I would use the limited guidance that p2 offers to argue that it doesn't need to be continuous because of its role as a narrative tool.

The FR 'tenday' should not be called a week, it should be called a tenday
Some day, I want to be in a big enough city to where I can find a group of people who are playing 13th Age so that I can play as a player in a campaign. It's starting to happen again, to me, I end up being DM most of the time, and it's starting to be deja vu.

Semantically we can make a distinction, but it has no impact on the exegesis.

@ThomasMarkov Sounds like a good idea to me. (Though since I'm a CM now, I'll leave that decision to the regular site mods... ;) )
@KorvinStarmast Indeed - I think that specific point is mentioned in the official D&D style guide (in addition to, presumably, the official Forgotten Realms style guide).

@AncientSwordRage ended up going with War Caster Feat and picked up a few spells that require concentration checks, Like Spirit Guardians
@MikeQ How's the day panned out?
I was looking through the spell list, and there were some spells that just seemed incredibly niche
Or the way they were worded didn't quite make them sound overly great
Like Augury, or Meld into Stone
