Q: Does the monk's Diamond Soul feature apply to death saving throws?

nick012000The description of the monk's class feature Diamond Soul says the following: Beginning at 14th level, your mastery of ki grants you proficiency in all saving throws. Additionally, whenever you make a saving throw and fail, you can spend 1 ki point to reroll it and take the second result. Does t...

Q: How do I make sure magic item distribution feels fair when there aren't enough items to go around?

TackI'm preparing a treasure hoard for a group of four level-two PCs (Cleric, Monk, Fighter, and Wizard). I decided to roll on the Treasure Hoard Table for CR 0-4, and take either the average result or my roll, whichever was higher. I ended up with a hoard that includes d4 items from Magic Item Table...

@BESW You mean, like, for occasional corners and handles and device-rails, or is there something not as obvious that they saved the day on?

1:46 AM
@nitsua60 Well, one thing was that they did pretty good work as slip-reduction pads: under furniture, as placemats to keep the plate from sliding around, etc.
There's better stuff for it, but it's really expensive so we saved it for the most crucial places and used yoga mats everywhere else.

Hi! How’s things?

I seem to have tricked my family into starting The Last Airbender :)

[wave] Today I am learning the specifics of just how wildly irresponsible our local unemployment benefits system can be.
(Handy hint: when setting up a system for giving benefits to people with no income at all, maybe don't make the applications and forms all digital-only?)

4:21 AM
@BESW Ugh, I’m sorry it’s so hard

On the one hand I'm grateful it's not for me, I'm helping someone else navigate this nonsense. On the other hand, that means if/when I mess it up, I'm not the one who's gonna get the fallout. So the stakes are higher than if it was just for myself.

4:53 AM
@BESW Yeah, I can see how that makes it harder
(Sorry, ran off to have birthday cake)

And this month they've decided that following up on existing job applications doesn't "count" as trying to get work; you have to prove you've made three new applications every week. Which is (a) not how job hunting works and (b) flooding businesses with busywork applications, while also (!!!) being another ridiculous "prove you're working hard enough to deserve to eat" things that's ostensibly to prevent "fraud" but let's be real that's not an obstacle for fraud.
[grumble]
Anyway, how's the cake?

@BESW Lemon raspberry Bundt cake. It was very delicious!

ooh

And my sister made me cupcakes to take to the pool for celebrating with my friends tomorrow

Karanduun - Make God Bleed got nominated for an Indie Groundbreaker award for best setting. (Its setting is loosely anti-canon and they spelled the name wrong.)

5:04 AM
@BESW sounds familiar... I did that for almost a year when I was studying part-time. I didn't bother going on unemployment last time I was made redundant - not sure if I would have qualified with my wife working, but didn't want the hassle anyway.

There are a lot of people here who really need that money, and their access to the Internet tends to be "the seven people in this house all share one pre-paid cell phone with an expensive data plan."
And while apparently there's a service for getting help with this stuff in person, you have to call and schedule an appointment, and the only reason we know that is an option is that we specifically asked.

I got to eat the rest of the frosting from the cupcakes too, because Mom was out of the house and my sister said I could have it as the rest of my birthday present (the cupcakes were the real present she gave me)

Oh, it's your birthday! Many happy returns of the day!

@BESW thanks!

5:16 AM
Anyways, I ought to be off. I got a sci-fi anthology from my grandfather as a present that I really want to go read (plus it’s past 10pm here and I really should be sleeping rather than eating leftover cake and starting new books)

Q: Which questions with Aegis do lack the [Aegis] tag?

TrishApparently, the tag aegis is currently only used for some 19 questions about a pathfinder-1e feature. @ThomasMarkov you might know this, 1) do we have a question like this: "Is odd-numbered attribute + feat better than even number + ASI ?" and 2) if it were to be asked, is it answerable in the general case or am I better off asking for the specific case?

I dont think we have that, and I dont think there can be a general answer.
It's going to be largely dependint on your goals and plans for the character and what they look like when they reach an ASI level.

I'm less inclined to ask the specific case because I'm not certain of what attribute set I want, and it's going to be partly influenced by roleplay concerns which are hard to quantify
so I want to get to 20 in the main character stat asap

It' going to come down to "which is better to you, the mathematical bonuses of an ASI or the feature gained from a half feat".
We cant tell you that.

maybe I could write something similar? But it's too far off atm

Yeah, I think that Q has adequate specificity.

12:17 PM
I was just expecting an answer along the lines of "Some Strength requirements on armour are odd numbered, multiclassing needs 13 in a stat. Feats that give +1 in attributes are general underpowered compared to ones that don't etc..."

Because of the specificity, an answer is able to succinctly explain the tradeoffs, applicable situations, and make a recommendation based on that. Without significant specificity, Wax Eagle's quality answer there isn't possible.

But that question definitely does not generalize well to "Is arbitrary feat better than ASI for arbitrary class?"

@ThomasMarkov even if it's narrowed down to a specific class and a specific attribute?

But if you can get us a prospective feat and a character build, we can examine the tradeoffs and use cases and make a recommendation.

12:22 PM
like 15 cha vs 14 cha for a warlock?

@AncientSwordRage Feat applications are too diverse to give a good answer.
Maybe if you gave us some thematic idea, we can narrow it down to feats that synergize with a particular theme or playstyle.

I'll have a think

But like "Half Feat + odd attribute vs. even attribute + ASI" is probably going to be opinion based without more information. Because we don't know what value you would place on what half feat features.
Basically, I dont want this to turn out to be "Recommend a half feat"

@ThomasMarkov same!

12:58 PM
> Half a Feet. You get +2 when Carefully attacking targets less than six inches across.

1:48 PM
@AncientSwordRage Last night, my players hit level 8 and one had this exact situation. Bard wanting to get their dex to 20: intiially took the ASI and then moved WIS to an odd number. I suggested looking at half-feats and they ended up with Athlete.

@NautArch yeah so I might be starting a new campaign at 1st level, and I'm trying to plan my stats in advance of the level 4 feat
@BESW like a called shot
I bet a game of FATE with weirdly phrased stunts might be super fun

@AncientSwordRage Sciborg uses the Milestone system not XP if that matters for your planning.

@AncientSwordRage I'm not generally a planner like that :) My characters have often shifted direction as I play them.

@bobble I don't think so?

Look I don't plan things so I wouldn't know

1:54 PM
@AncientSwordRage @bobble Milestone wouldn't change that, it's just a difference for when a level up happens.

Also, we finished up to ep. 3 last night of A:TLA

@bobble I don't normally, but I'm trying to get my head around point buy
@bobble Woop!
Point buy lets me constantly fiddle with upping/lowering attributes and that scratches an itch but doesn't actually result in anything concrete I can decide upon

I think any benefits of having odd ab.scores (other than half-feats synergy etc.) should be covered under When are Ability Scores (not modifiers) used in D&D 5e?

@AncientSwordRage I'm generally more of a fan of feats than ASIs.

@bobble I wish I didn't feel like I had to :P
@Someone_Evil good to know

1:59 PM
@AncientSwordRage What I tend to do is figure out my 'build online' point. When do I get the mechanics I really want to make the character come alive?

@NautArch Yeah I feel like I am too, but from what I've read Warlock's are very SAD if they're going to rely on Eldritch Blast?

@AncientSwordRage Non hexblades not so much.

ah ok... cool

Hexblades can use charisma for melee attacks too

I don't want to optimise, so much as minimise FOMO :p

2:01 PM
So every stat can be a dump stat for a hexblade
Constitution notwithstanding
cuz everyone needs consitution

@ThomasMarkov Depends...my hexblade needed STR for heavy armor.

I've always played a dex hexblade.

@ThomasMarkov dexblade
I've always been in favour of a GOO Tomelock

@ThomasMarkov Nah, Strength Hexblade. Sexblade.

@NautArch .... not strexblade....?

2:04 PM
@NautArch rubs eyebrows in combination of frustration and amusement

@NautArch That doesn't sound appropriate for some reason

@ThomasMarkov Sword and Board plate hexblade is fun.

@Someone_Evil Sounds like a magic item you see on reddit when you sort by controversial.

Batllemaster 3/Hexblade X is a great combo.
You're a short rest mechanic machine.
So many options.

2:07 PM
Swords Bard X/Hexblade 2 is one of the strongest multiclass combos in the game.

@ThomasMarkov oooooh
Although that hexblade 2 is a dip you know I don't like :P

That's cuz it's obscenely powerful in most of its sensible use cases.

Yeah, I really don;t think they thought that through - especially with some of the underwhelming hexblade abilities.

Q: Has user 'last seen' information been moved?

KirtMy recollection is that "last seen" information was prominently displayed on a user's profile page right after "member since" on the top line. As I look at profiles today, it is not there. I have been able to find it in "network profile" page, "accounts" tab. The "accounts" tab appears to be the...

4:02 PM
Warlock dips in general offer way too much power, lol
My 11Paladin/5Warlock is about to take her 12th Paladin level, and at 22 Charisma as a level 17 character, the reason to ever use anything other than Agonizing Blast is.... nonexistent.
At least at her current level she's using a Devotee's Censer, meaning she's hitting for 3d8 on a normal attack.

4:16 PM
@Xirema Except for wanting to smite. But a 3d8 is banger.

@NautArch It is! She only has a +8 to attack rolls though, which at level 16 is.... not really keeping up anymore.
(Didn't take Hexblade, for context)

@Xirema I was gonna say, you should be like +11 to hit by now
but no hexblade so

GcL
@Xirema In a strictly mathematical way, yeah. Involvement with a powerful patron is usually an issue in our stories.

@GcL For pure warlocks, too?

@GcL The group I DM for has a Rogue/Warlock where the patron is Celestial Warlock, and it's really hard to justify the patron doing anything other than supplying power to the rogue.

GcL
4:28 PM
@NautArch Oh yeah. They're the best. Die hard. The pact is a huge part of the character. Why did they make the pact? What aren't they willing to do to further the relationship? How to accomplish what they want in a way that also would please/get attention of/follow in the footsteps/be like the patron.

Like, it doesn't make sense for a Celestial to try to scheme against the (generally already good-aligned) behavior of the party, and I've literally characterized the patron as an unidentified glowing ball of light that communicates by transmitting emotions into their worshipper's brains, so maybe I've boxed myself in, lol

GcL
@Xirema Whenever I hear statements like "hard to justify" in story telling, I wonder if it's a deficiency in effort or imagination. The alternative is the story tellers just want it that way. In which case, just say that.

@GcL I'm guessing you do similar things for other classes? Clerics and their gods, paladins and their oath, etc?

@GcL This is something that Matt Mercer and Travis Willingham did exeptionally well in Critical Role.

@GcL Well, it's more that I want to make the patron a little more involved, but I can't think of any good justifications for them to do so.
The character is already, by their inherent nature, doing all the kinds of things a celestial would want them to do.

GcL
4:31 PM
@NautArch I do. Have a cleric worshiper of the Devourer currently. Still does good thing... just does them in a way that aligns with either "throwing things into a hole" "being in a storm" "being a storm" etc. Makes for some interesting antics.
@Xirema Start to change the characterization and write yourself a way out of your own box.

@GcL Nice!

Ironically, the fighter's relationship to the entity bonded to their weapon (not a sentient weapon, just an entity that can communicate through it) is more like a classical warlock↔patron relationship, although that's easier to figure out because A) the entity's goals aren't totally aligned with the party so there's more interesting conflict there, and B) it was a preexisting character that I had more concrete plans for.

@GcL There's rarely such a thing as a deficiency of imagination, and much more commonly a thing where an author/writer/creator constrains themselves and gets stuck with their own assumptions

@GcL If we were early in the campaign I'd probably be working on that, but at this point we're nearing the end.

GcL
It ended up being a lot more interesting that I would have expected, since the Devourer has no personification and zero F's to give. The character tries to make storms "better" using call lightning.
@Xirema It's never too late to evolve a relationship. Especially with an unresolved ball of light. Maybe the patron just didn't care much to notice the warlock. I ran that with a warlock of the Old Ones. They eventually got powerful enough to be noticed... and that made for a good story line.
Being noticed wasn't nearly what they expected out of it.
Ball of light could have been the pupil of the patron. Now with some distance, in your minds eye, you feel like you can see a face... and it's scowling.

4:38 PM
Or it could remain uninvolved. Why would it be important to get the patron involved? At this point in the campaign, would adding such a storyline improve players' enjoyment of the game?

@MikeQ nah im just tryin to kill stuff

i.e., do you want to get the patron involved because that's what [INSERT GM HERE] would do? Or do you genuinely think that would make the game more fun?

It worked for critical role because it was done for tv and it was their job and they will reliably show up for 140 sessions to tell that story.

@MikeQ It's mainly just that it's one of those story beats I spent some time developing when the player told me they wanted to multiclass, but never went anywhere.

When your campaign is not going to last for three years worth of consistent sessions, your mileage my vary.

4:43 PM
The patron got introduced, and has, in the 8 months since, had maybe one significant interaction with the party.

Then it doesn't sound like it needs to be intrinsically tied to the ongoing plot. Maybe it could show up and say "keep up the good work" the next time you need a deus ex machina or want the party to find a magic item. But beyond that a larger role seems unnecessary.

GcL
@MikeQ Which is flavor. I'd go with something about the patron or the relationship. E.g. it's a ball of light, "you feel the patron's great affection for windows." Then subsequently have a caper that involves breaking and entering. See how the character handles that. Do they sort out a way to have the window bypassed without breaking it? I'm always impressed with how good players come up with stuff to get over or around minor hurdles like that.
With my current group, I'd expect them to come up with a scheme to bribe someone to leave a window open.
or "remove for cleaning" or something of that nature.

5:44 PM
I need some help with this question
Nevermind, I was not confused.

6:11 PM
@Kangarule howdy

user521200
Hey.

user521200
Thanks again for helping me with my question. I'm definitely going to try and make sure I have a better understanding of the core rules before I run any games.

Everyone is new to the game at some point, and it isn't exactly a simple rule set :P
I played my first D&D 5e with a group of players and a DM who had never played before.
It was interesting and only somewhat resembled how the rules were supposed to work lol

user521200
I suppose if you all had fun though that's what matters :)

Argh. Any electrical genius' in here (@Shalvenay?)
My garage door antenna range is awful. Tried just twisting larger gauge speaker cable and a coax onto it, but no joy.

6:15 PM
@NautArch If you have a question that can reasonably be conveyed in a brief text I can text my cousin

I've turned off all the lights that are even close to it to minimize interference.

I'm pretty good at making electronics short out... :)

I haven't tried shutting down circuit by circuit.
TO identify the interference point.

@Kangarule Yeah, and we eventually figured it out
I first realized we were doing it wrong when our warlock cast dispel magic while we were still 1st level.

user521200
@ThomasMarkov Just wait that warlock will come back one day and it will all be revealed that he was secretly the BBEG at 20th level.

6:20 PM
@ThomasMarkov Genuine interest and no judgement: how did you end up with that possibility?

@bobble you are made of metal (and crown shaped)

@AncientSwordRage are you SURE it's metal, though?

@Someone_Evil I'm not sure how he got there, but it was the thing that sort of tipped me off that maybe we didn't know how to play, and I reread the relevant PHB sections a couple times and watched some rules videos, and then came back and was "hey guys, we want to actually play by the rules, right?" and when everyone agreed to that premise, I went through and fixed all the things we were all doing wrong.

@bobble .... No... Good point

Because I can easily see someone taking spell level to mean 'level you must be to cast this spell' (and I think we have some Qs with that misunderstanding), but I suppose you must have missed spell levels entirely

6:22 PM
@Someone_Evil Yeah, I think he just saw "you know two spells" and went and picked two spells from the list in the phb.

@ThomasMarkov That could've gotten real interesting

user521200
I think i'll take true strike and Power Word Kill /s

I was doing stuff like casting healing word way too many times per day, and also casting spells with my action on the same turn, because the bonus action casting rule is a beautiful piece of English literature.
The rogue's sneak attack strategy was great.
"Can I run around to behind the enemy to get advantage and sneak attack?" DM: Yeah I guess that makes sense
Were we using the optional variant facing rules? No, we were barely using the mandatory rules.

1 hour later…
7:30 PM
@ThomasMarkov I wish I remembered more about the first time I played D&D, but I suspect we were doing things equally incorrectly. I was playing a wizard, and I honestly don't recall rolling a d20 to hit once? I guess I might've only had spells with saves, but that seems unlikely...
It was great fun, of course, and I did my wizardly duty of almost killing the party with a poorly-placed fireball, but definitely did not involve much in the way of following the rules.

@NautArch yeah, I'd try that, also check the batteries in the remote since that's half the range equation right there
