How go
My current focus is balanced between plans for Minecraft (I'm on Hiatus from any serious gaming after completing Sekiro) and developing a plugin in C#

Lots to do, struggling to do it.

@BESW D:
Sorry to hear it
'lo Ben

Ben
@BESW I know what you mean. I think the only difference is I'm ignoring everything else until I need to do them (which in itself is a bit counterproductive)
@AncientSwordRage How's things?

1:26 AM
Can't complain

Ben
Can't, don't want to, or don't see the need? :P

A little of each 🙃

I'm overwhelmed with applying to internships/jobs so I'm just not :)

With how hard everyone is finding it to stay focused, I'm not surprised there's been a surge of adults discovering that they have ADHD. I've wondered if I have it myself. (I had a look at a list of symptoms, and I only have a few, so probably not...)

Yeah, it's 'fun' to play "brain chemistry or trauma response?"

Q: Can Lair Actions be used while Resting?

Devious DMI am curious because of an existing situation in my current campaign, and would appreciate feedback. Here's the scenario: An Aboleth is confronted in its lair by the party, which manages to beat it within an inch of its life before it flees to deep water within the lair itself. The party decides ...

Q: To what extend a question has to be an "idea generation" one to be closed?

enkryptorI stumbled upon these two questions which made me think: What drives the plot for antiheroes? - is open and have several different answers with different ideas How can I reasonably prevent Manual of Bodily Health abuse? - was closed as an "idea generation" question In my opinion the first one...

@NautArch Why did you remove the homebrew review tag

@ThomasMarkov Because they are asking for a rarity ranking, not a review of their homebrew?

That falls under the purview of homebrew review though...
We have 63 questions tagged homebrew-review asking about rarity.
Sorry, 24 questions.
@TheOracle This looks like a duplicate, see my comment for target.

I did a quick search and we've also got a lot without it
But I wouldn't say a review is figuring out rarity value (not that it matters anyway)

Hypothetically, the rarity (in 5e) relates to how powerful the magic item is, in parallel to a spell's level doing the same. I'm pretty sure we have some questions around how well that pans out, but that might be best for an answer to link?

It is though, it's evaluating a particular aspect of a homebrew item that is used to assess balance in relation to other magic items.

11:52 AM
It seems like we use it inconsistently, but I don't think that this is about a review to adjust to get to a balance, but just a "what is this rarity?"

In other words, a review.

"Is this balanced as a rare item?" and "what rarity should this be?" is fundamentally the same question, though you could argue the first shows more research

This is not a hill worth dying on for me because we apply inconsistently. If you want to add it, I'm fine with it.
But either way, that item is legendary.

I only skimmed before edits by my hunch was gonna be uncommon. I'll reread, but why legendary?

@Someone_Evil Basically at-will healing word plus a one round hold person?

11:57 AM
Oh, I thought it was only a range increase to healing kit, which would turn it into Grave clerics spare the dying (roughly)
At will healing is a bit of a never do, isn't it?

@Someone_Evil Hmm, true. I guess it is more spare the dying...but what if they take the healer feat? Now it's healing word.

With the healer feat there's a limit to once per long rest per character, no?

short rest (aka every 1 maybe two encounters)
And that'd be an obvious investment
But if they don't take it, then yeah, it's an extra cantrip plus the one-round hold person (which alone is pretty durn powerful)

Anyway, I VTC'd based on comments.

Mos def.
Oops @Someone_Evil. I was wrong. The Healer fit is a 1HP heal all the time. The short rest recharge piece is for more healing.
During a short rest.

12:11 PM
Ah, right, it's stabilize to 1 hp meaning the target must already have been at 0
Which is a substantial boon, but most of that is in the feat, not sure where I'd put the magic item

The fact you can do it at range. It ends up healing word at will.

It's the taser part I have the hardest time with. The DM would appear to not have had a Monk in the party

Yeah, a one round paralysis is badnewz.
with a DC of 18?!

Spell DC +1 by the looks of it

I mean, a wand of paralysis is 15
and that's rare

12:14 PM
Most magic items have DCs of 13?

You combine that wand action with the healing word...we're in at least very rare if not legendary.

But I suspect a designline with items in general is to not have the items overshadow the characters, but I'm not sure how much that applies to this

That's another potential issue, yeah.
But if this is a low risk of death group then the healing isn't a big deal.
If it's a hero-style game, then maybe the paralysis doesn't matter, either.
And if the DM has already approved it...then I don't know.

@NautArch I think approval hinges on rarity (based on their comment), but I'm not sure I agree with outsourcing approval to randoms on the internet (as it/we were/are)

@Someone_Evil Yeah, DM needs to determine rarity.
But if the DM approved the item, then that seems like they approved the rarity.
"Yes, that sounds good. Oh, you said it's very rare...no, sorry."

12:21 PM
@NautArch Theyre being allowed items of two different rarities, so they still need to know what the rarity of their other items can be.

@ThomasMarkov True . But either way, this is not in a state that we can answer it.
That G4 event looks amazing.
So many good lineups.

Every Saturday afternoon, I have a virtual RPG group. It's just four of us these days, playing D&D5e in post apocalyptic San Francisco (although there will be and are currently more apocalyptic events, so that's not quite accurate). I mention it occasionally, but I wanted to talk a little bit about some stuff that's come up in our game lately. Specifically, I want to talk about

Are the edits here too much for a homebrew review?

@NautArch Yeah, I think so. We needed the details mentioned in comments.
This seems to be a new iteration of the item.

I also really don't understand F1's answer.

So one of my friends is considering running Rime of the Frost Maiden and I was thinking about rolling a Cavalier for the setting. From what I've been told, I shouldn't be too worried about the common problems that befall mounts (restricted space, difficult terrain, etc.)

@Yuuki Terrain can be tricky, but mounts will be part of it.
It's one of the better ways to move around.

@Yuuki Depends on how the DM runs it.
@NautArch How many chocobos have we lost?

I want to avoid horses and whatnot in favor of something more exotic for my mount. So far, I've come up with spiders and giant frogs/toads.

@Yuuki Those won't likely work.

@Yuuki Where are you getting those from?

6:25 PM
You'll probably have (1) option, but you may be able to talk to your DM about other Dale-denizens.

@ThomasMarkov Just thinking about weird mounts? Mechanically, I don't expect anything different, it'll probably just be a horse statblock with a fancy skin on top.

As written, the only mounts there are Axebeaks

Hmm, it also seems like both dogs and axe-beaks should be susceptible to cold, too - which is something I hadn't noticed.

@Yuuki No reindeer mount for a winter-themed campaign?

@MikeQ Horse-like animals are kinda low priority for this character.

6:31 PM
What about a penguin mount? Use axebeak stats, call it a Dire Penguin.

dire penguin?

@ThomasMarkov I had not been treating the mounts/pack animals as needing saves against the cold.

@NautArch They all died anyway

But @Yuuki That is supposed to happen, so maintaining that mount is going to get difficult.
@ThomasMarkov True, and you've got new options now :)
But yeah, that was a thing I missed.

A dire arctic hare could also be a suitable mount for snowy terrain. Hop like the wind!

6:36 PM
@MikeQ it's gonna die. They're all gonna die.

A well-trained, juvenile white dragon

@Upper_Case and as soon as you find two more, some jerk finds all five parts of a forbidden mummy and your dragons get sent to the shadow realm

@Yuuki A good point... and one I should have expected a Yuuki to figure out

i started looking monster hunter monsties as mounts, but i feel like that wouldn't fit the aesthetic i'm going for
the arctic hare might be better, i'm not looking for a mount that would fight alongside me

@Yuuki And you're okay with potentially losing that mount to cold, yes?

6:43 PM
preferably, it would be one that runs away if it takes even a little bit of damage
@NautArch i don't think i'll be too dependent on the mount with this cavalier

@Yuuki er...aren't you on it?

@NautArch it'll shuck me off, i'll yell at it for being a coward as it runs away, but then it comes back after combat ends

@Yuuki So you'l fall prone?
maybe?
I mean, that's reasonable, but could be not-so-good.
BUt honestly, maintaining that mount and keeping it alive will not be a joke in Icewind Dale.
And that's not including encounters.

@Yuuki visibility is 30 feet in a blizzard

@ThomasMarkov @Yuuki Odds are once it runs, it's gone.

6:46 PM
i'm debating talking to the DM about this concept where the mount is functionally immortal (whenever danger happens, it just runs off and mysteriously comes back some time after the danger has passed)

@Yuuki magic item that can cast find steed?
cuz it sounds like you want find steed

might be how i'd do it. mechanically, i'd use one of my attunement slots for a magic item that does find steed
in-story, it'd be something else

@Yuuki WHat's the purpose of the mount, then? If it's immortal, then it's not used in combat? And also not used for travel?
I'd be very wary to base a character concept around another creature in icewind dale.
Find steed gives you an opportunity to get it back when it does go, but if you have a paladin that could get tricky in terms of stepping on toes (amirite, bards?)

Bards get find greater steed before paladins, so who's really stepping on who here?

But this conceit will have a lot of work to maintain for you - and if the return on that work is simply just a creature that's with you but not with you, then that seems underwhelming.
@ThomasMarkov Bards STOLE it from paladins before they could get it. Just like Tempest Clerics(and bards) stole Destructive Wave. Bastages.

6:51 PM
@NautArch Paladins need to git gud at magic. Bards get it a whole 3 levels earlier.
Does your god really like you that much if he wont teach you tricks available to a middle of the road guitar player?

@ThomasMarkov I have become a believer that X-only spells need to be for X only.

@NautArch A college of swords bard with Tenser's Transformation is devastating.

What about a Figurine of Wondrous Power?

Q: Can any of the found greater steeds benefit from the weapon proficiencies granted by Tenser's Transformation?

Thomas MarkovThe mount summoned by the 4th level Paladin spell find greater steed has this interesting ability: While mounted on it, you can make any spell you cast that targets only you also target the mount. The 6th level wizard spell Tenser’s tranformation grants weapon proficiencies; You have proficien...

I love bards, if only because they make that question possible

The cooldowns can be rough, but otherwise they have some appealing features along the lines you describe

6:55 PM
Yeah, those cooldowns are no joke.

The Goat of Traveling version might be the most useful, and terrain-appropriate too

@Upper_Case 50/50 chance each hour to get exhaustion

Yikes

so my idea for the mount is one that i can use to travel and maybe a few rounds of mounted combat, but not something that would fight on its own (basically not a ranger's companion)

@Yuuki I'm just going to keep ringing this bell: it is very likely going to die during travel.

6:58 PM
I wonder how exhaustion would interact with a figurine that takes goat form an hour at a time... probably deep into DM call territory
Wait
ride another party member

might shelve this concept for another campaign/setting then

They won't do what you say, have a better shot at surviving,

bah, nm. Those wondrous figurines won't last long enough for any useful travel.

Too bad. One of my players loved the griffin one they got. But they also never rode it, nor intended to

@Yuuki Do you know if the DM is going to use the Secrets or background hooks?

7:00 PM
@NautArch no idea

@Yuuki something to ask :)
They add a little bit of fun to the mix.

One more close vote to dupe this meta

@Yuuki Are you looking for something thematic?
Or just a fun concept?

@NautArch as in something that ties into the campaign?

@Yuuki Yah - or the area. Have you thought about if you're local or an outsider?

7:04 PM
Honestly, I prefer being an outsider usually. It sidesteps the whole problem of "how did you not know <common fact about the region>?"
hmm... i've been thinking about swarmkeeper ranger...
but instead of a faceless swarm, i just have like three rodents under my hat

@Yuuki Are they piloting the ranger, ratatouille-style?

@MikeQ could be! who knows?!

@ThomasMarkov thanks for answering that meta!

@doppelgreener I tried to take some of the edge off my statement before I quoted your question "Im not sure why youve stated" now reads "Im not sure this is accurate", I hope that reads better.
Maybe we're doing them a disservice, but its not by being ambiguous about what we want (unless others want something else).
