Posting again to share some free playbooks for Fellowship: tinyurl.com/FellowshipPlaybooks a PbtA game about communities and the people they send to defeat an evil Overlord, and mention I'd be up to run a demo game, time TBD with players. (GMT-5 here; it will likely matter)

Q: In this example, which path would a monster affected by the Dissonant Whispers spell take?

ordiA bard casts Dissonant Whispers (PHB, p. 234) on a monster (diagram below). The monster has to choose between 2 paths. The left path is "safer" than the right path since his allies are that way but the right path led him a little farther from the bard. Can the monster (A drow in armor and mid m...

About to stream our D&D 5e actual-play podcast in a little over half an hour: https://www.twitch.tv/events/Wj7gGRh2QIGG0fiaMoQtSw

In a universe adjacent to our own lies a world known as Runia. This world, once peaceful and idyllic, is now threatened by a monstrous being from its prehistory. A group of adventurers known as Whiskey Company have risen up to do what they can to fight this entity known only as Nagat. They have trekked far across the mortal realms in search of the shards of Barrinoth, the Titan of Justice, in hopes of returning him to his full power.

@nitsua60 mine reach that stage of school and stuff in a couple years, but about that time I test for 6th degree and my competition opportunities drop dramatically.
First day districts total: first in forms, second in sparring, stick sparring and weapons forms. First in team stick sparring. All the creative stuff is tomorrow.

4:34 AM
hey there @linksassin

@Shalvenay Hey, how's it going?

@linksassin alright here, found out that my "get an upvote" answer on Writing wound up riding a HNQ gravytrain to a badger XD

@Shalvenay Nice. It was a good answer

@linksassin yeah, kind of surprised I didn't get more reaction than what I did to my answer on the train heist though

@Shalvenay That is something you have to get used to on writing. There is a much lower voting rate. Sometimes great answers only have 1 or 2 upvotes

4:43 AM
@linksassin oh XD sounds like the situation I know and despise from DIY
let me link you an answer....

@Shalvenay It's partly a lower users number and partly the culture. There have been a bunch of metas about it but nothing really seems to change.

A: Replacing a Challenger breaker with an after-market breaker

ThreePhaseEelYou can use BRs instead of Cs If your panel labeling says it takes type C breakers, then there's an easy way out of it: type BR breakers (as depicted below, with the type C labeling highlighted) are legal, safe, and widely-available (at any big-box or hardware store) replacements for type C brea...

The suffrage badge barely gets awarded since there is less content and less voting. writing.stackexchange.com/help/badges/57/suffrage

I think most of it I run into in the electrical tag is unless something is stupefyingly, blatantly obvious, people just won't vote for the most part

@Shalvenay I think part of the issue is that the questions really only help the asker. On RPG people see a question and go "Oh that confuses me too!" and upvote the q and the answers. On DIY or writing unless you've been in that exact situation you won't even understand the question let alone think it is useful

4:50 AM
(and the answer I linked is a great example -- it's something that is spot-on correct and well-sourced, yet only has 1 vote ever -- that solitary upvote, which likely came from the same user who commented on the answer XD (and is one of the most active answer-ers in the electrical tag, as well)
@linksassin oh, DIY does get some upvote magnets, but I do agree that we're stuck bereft of our dupehammer an awful lot there, partly because no two buildings are built quite alike :P
(my only >100 upvote answer is an electrical tag answer on DIY)
(it rode a HNQ gravytrain a long way, as it's actually probably not nearly as good an answer in Stack-answer-terms as the one-vote ansewr I linked)

@Shalvenay I saw that one. I think it was because it was important and correct.

@linksassin yeah, it's not wrong at all, it just irks me that I can give an answer that's equally correct, much better sourced, and basically get no reaction from folks who see it
(thx for the UV btw :)

Then again what I consider my best researched and supported answer only got to 10 votes. While this answer that only took seconds got to 57 really quick.

@linksassin that happens more than you might think.

@Shalvenay I think it might have been my first action on DIY. I joined awhile ago but haven't really done much.

@linksassin Both of those seem fine to me.
The longer one is a bit of a text wall, but not too bad.

@GcL The point was the amount of effort it not connected to the votes. One took me a long time and has multiple sources of information but only got 10 votes. The other took less than a minute and is my second highest voted answer.

@linksassin It's shorter and easier to digest. The question itself got more upvotes as well.
Maybe you had a good answer that was easy for you to come up with.

@GcL Oh I understand that. It was just a response to the discussion with Shalvenay.

@linksassin it's a phenomenon I'm very familiar with on reddit
@GcL precisely. the easier/faster content is to consume, the more quickly it attracts upvotes
Reddit isn't the same format so big subreddits that allow image posts and the like will often have their front pages be almost nothing but images
Compare the front pages of /r/dnd (which allows standalone image posts) and /r/dndnext (which doesn't):

Designing with Style: Ability Checks and Saving Throws. From Hannah Rose's tweet: "My first blog post for @KoboldPress is now live! It's aimed at aspiring designers and those who want to level up their mastery of the #dnd5e style guide. Leave a comment to let me know what you'd like to see in future posts!"
It references the D&D official house style guide
I'd just like to take credit for making people aware of this document even if I had nothing to do with this

TERRORSAUR was a lot of fun! I really liked how it communicated its themes and intended content almost exclusively through the character creation questions. I'm not actually sure we applied the action resolution rules properly but I loved how we did it.

Okay, suppose I had, like, a day to give myself a crash course on Eberron and I don't want to really spend much money. So maybe a novel or two, or a pdf of a sourcebook, but keeping it under $20 would be optimal. What should I grab? (I know virtually nothing about Eberron, as a baseline.)

Apr 26 at 7:24, by BESW
Welp, Terrorsaur is a free one-page game by Nora Blake, in which you are an eldritch pterosaur who channels death-magic to wreak vengeance on humanity for daring to say you're not a dinosaur.

Cool. Will check it out =)

Q: Can a 2nd-level sorcerer use sorcery points to create a 2nd-level spell slot?

devinbostIf a player is a 2nd-level sorcerer, and sacrifices one of their 1st-level spell slots to get an additional sorcery point, could they use their 3 sorcery points to create another 2nd-level spell slot?

@nitsua60 I wish I could help, but I actually know nothing about Eberron as well.

Q: Does the "6 seconds per round" rule apply to speaking/roleplaying during combat situations?

Ray AlezI've been thinking that it would be great to have more roleplay during combat situations - talk to NPCs and fellow players, exchange banter, find out more about enemies by talking to them, generally use RP moments to make combat more fun. Maybe even try to change the turn of battle sometimes - ...

Had this brilliant idea for a campaign background, then discovered I didn't have an actual plot. Mages have been maintaining a planet-wide anti-magic field for 150 years, but they're dying off now without replacement and the field is collapsing.
This has just been noticed because some magic items started working again.
There are spellbooks in libraries. Most of them are wrong.

Q: Is it possible to trip with natural weapon?

Momonga-samaUsually trip action requires one to use an unarmed attack or a special trip weapon. Is it possible to trip using a natural weapon?

Where's the lich emoji when you need one?

10:01 PM
@nitsua60 Clearly the mages are on the moon
or maybe it could be a situation more like, hey, your post apocalyptic civilisation has just rediscovered hyperspace technology 5th level spells, and then a bunch of aliens turn up like "HEY, WE AGREED TWO THOUSAND YEARS AGO YOU GUYS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO CAST TELEPORTATION CIRCLE" and start exterminating the planet.
