This new druid circle has me interested
if only for the sake of pushing an extreme further than was previously possible

Uh oh. They're trying to bring back Truenamer.
why

What?

I was going to ask if it'd be worth it to post new answer to this question with the UA druid but I just noticed they didn't include UA in the list of allowed sources...
I just found a way to greatly extend the theoretical range of Eldritch Blast
by "greatly extend" I mean taking it from about 0.2 miles to 3.5 miles
because WotC decided not to give the wildfire spirit a maximum distance from the druid
I think it's time for a trip to the Elemental Plane of Math

12:28 AM
Okay, three things I don't really feel motivated to do: catch up on today's TL transcript, write some college recs, write a quiz. Oh, and grade a quiz.
d4

YOU HAVE SPOKEN, O GODS OF THE ROOM!

So college recs? XD

Yup. I leave you in charge =)

Good good I'll just flood the room with oxygen and a little hydrogen

12:33 AM
(I'm really digging the chat userscript, btw. Anyone who doesn't have technological objections to userscripts: I recommend giving it a try.)

But don't worry I'll take the hydrogen away for power production
Just don't smoke in here
XD

Apropos of nothing, I've repcapped two days in a row from telling someone "no, once you've rolled that thing happened. Even if you don't like the result." I'm not sure where this falls on my sheep-scale.

Lol
I wish I knew what avatar that was
I don't think? I was ever a 🐑

@trogdor Which one?
@trogdor At the time of that message I linked you were a table-flipping princess and I was Eddie Van Halen's patent application illustration =)

Ah yes ok
That was a fantastic one

A: The Winterbash 2015 Hatmas "Photo" Album (& maybe embarrassing yearbook)

nitsua60So far I've just got sad Eddie, Eddie-in-disguise, and Eddie-to-the-nines. Presumably he's on the way to a benefit/gala. (Anything else interferes too much with his beautiful, beautiful, big 80's hair.) For the after-party, Eddie takes some fashion tips from Mark Knopfler:

Ah yeah
I can see why finding hats for that one could be a problem

@trogdor The new Unearthed Arcana has a wizard subclass that seems to be an attempt at 3.5's problematic Truenamer class

Ah

Q: Can you concentrate on a special ability while also concentrating on a spell?

DustinThere exist several abilities that have the text similar to, this effect lasts while you maintain concentration (as if you were concentrating on a spell). One such example is the Bard College of Glamour: Mantel of Majesty abililty. At 6th level, you gain the ability to cloak yourself in a fey...

@nitsua60 I had no idea this existed but I love it.

12:59 AM
@Rubiksmoose I've had two avatars in my time: Eddie's patent, and my rage-sheep.
Eddie's patent application was a piece I used in my engineering design classes: "look, kids! Just solve an actual problem you're having and we can probably get a patent! Even Eddie did it!"
> ...allowing the player to create new techniques and sounds previously unknown to any player.
You know, that'd sound like hyperbole... if it weren't Eddie frikkin van Halen making the claim =)

@nitsua60 Excuse me, I think you mean: Edward L. Van Halen
;)

Ahem: "Edward L. Van Halen, inventor."
Excuse me.

I love that illustration to death though. And the fact EVH even has one.

Google patents was a serious boon to my design class.

Hah! I'll bet.

1:04 AM
hey there @linksassin, how're things going?

lol
@nitsua60 true

2:01 AM
@Shalvenay Hey, busy. Real life has been hectic last couple of months.

2:12 AM
@MikeQ Do that same build but with a centaur. You can get bonus action attacks without Frenzy (the +10 MS from Fast Movement makes 30 feet repeatable, and you can grab Mobile feat for even more)

@DavidCoffron Not necessary. My 2nd place build was similar, but Zealot barbarian instead of Berserker. Does 35 damage per turn instead of 36.

Ooh. Hadn't considered Zealots. They do a lot off good stuff.
(10 guaranteed damage is good for this challenge)
Wizards with Empowered Evocation can only accomplish 21. It's kind of sad.

The centaur would get 36, but I think its movement requirement counts as extra setup

I here you. I can't think of a build that beats 35 anyway
Best Fighter does 24.

Tabaxi fighter with TWF + Dual Wielder can do 30, getting five attacks with two claws (although it gets into that semantics gray zone re "wielding")

2:15 AM
Does that work with claws? Don't you need light weapons
@MikeQ But claws aren't even considered light. You mean Dual Wielder feat?

RPG stuff in this room? No no no XP

> You can use two-weapon fighting even when the one-handed melee weapons you are wielding aren't light.
I don't know if I'd consider body parts "one-handed"

Aug 7 '18 at 20:02, by doppelgreener
At least for this chat, going by its history, the most off-topic thing anyone's probably asked in here was a tabletop RPG question.

XD

@MikeQ Any hope for a 2d6 weapon from Pact of the Blade?
Oh wait. It takes an action. Nvm

2:21 AM
Yep. The puzzle rules effectively exclude pact of the blade.

Any hope for Archdruid?
Could be some nice CR 6 beasts

@DavidCoffron Tried it. Most options have big dice, but few attacks. Since all dice are minimized... nothing good. (Even with an at-will alter self for +1 per hit)

Hmph.
You can get to 20 on Rogue with Insightful Fighting
Rogue 15/Fighter 5

You can get 30 with Fighter 7+ (Eldritch knight) plus Warlock 2+ (with Agonizing Blast)
Add 7 levels of Paladin (Oathbreaker) for 5 more, so 35
Oh - make that Oathbreaker 11 / Eldritch Knight 7 / Warlock 2, you can get 36

2:52 AM
I guess everyone here knows this already, but I just found out about this tool
worldanvil.com is a website akin to a wiki specifically made for worldbuilding
3
it's been a couple of hours moving my info from One Note to there but it looks good and useful!
and with that I go to sleep T_T

yep yep. I think it's fairly well known but can't hurt to inform others :)

I just found it and it helped me sooo much

@MikeQ Brilliant
Fighter 11/Oathbreaker 7 gives 33, can we eek out 3 with the last two levels?

3:08 AM
Monk for bonus action attack?

@MikeQ Yeah yeah, that gives 44, no?

...Yes, I think. Can you use natural weapons with the martial arts bonus attack?

Each attack is 1d4 or 1d6 + 5 + 5
Do you get enough ASIs? 1 from paladin, three from fighter. check!
@MikeQ You can just use unarmed strikes?

@DavidCoffron Do those count as "melee weapon damage rolls" ?

@MikeQ Ooh

3:11 AM
If not, it's still 39 (1dX + 5+5)x3 + (1d4+5), which is better than 36

9
Q: How does a Tabaxi or Tortle Monk's claws affect monk unarmed attack damage?

ShadyGrinDo the claws of Tabaxi and Tortles change the unarmed attacks of monk to slashing damage, or is the damage separate? Does the unarmed slashing damage increase with the monk's level, as described on the monk table in the PHB?

19
A: Can a lizardfolk monk use their bonus action to make an unarmed strike using their Bite trait?

SzegaYou can use your Bite with Martial Arts This is how an unarmed strike is described: Instead of using a weapon to make a melee weapon attack, you can use an unarmed strike: a punch, kick, head-butt, or similar forceful blow (PHB 195, errata v1.0) It is clear that not only your hands ca...

Ah, then yeah. That's 44.

I think they are natural weapon and unarmed strikes at the same time.

@DavidCoffron This system is weird. Why does anyone play it?

@MikeQ Facts
Although I suspect it is because the edge cases we explore rarely impact gameplay

3:38 AM
@MikeQ It was the first of its kind and earned a massive reputation, now has the backing of a large corporation, and most people don't ever learn that there's better, or what that better is.

Or just how freaking much variety there is

@DavidCoffron For all player races, yeah, they specifically state under the natural weapon that they can be used to make unarmed strikes. It's not a general rule though. It's weird indeed.

I don't think I've even played a significant percentage of the different TTRPG's that exist but I've played a ton more than anyone who has stuck to D&D all this time

I've played L5R 5e and Lancer. (And AiME, but that's just a hack of D&D 5e.) Slowly getting there
oh, technically I've played a session of Honey Heist and one of Golden Sky Stories
thanks to fellow chatizens :)

That's great
Honey heist and GSS are amazing
In pretty different ways but still

Q: Is Having my Players Control Two Parties a Good Idea?

DotaroVSJioI'm new to DMing, and I'm currently working on a 5e homebrew campaign that I'll be running. At some point in the campaign (most likely towards the middle; this campaign will probably average-length), I'd like to have my players create another party. This one will be working for the main villain o...

I've started assuming this
I don't even know when

@Rubiksmoose oof. twatter did something nonstandard? :/

We've had one boxing issues with it for a while
At least I assume that is what this is about

@Shalvenay Apparently not :-/

I don't know how to explain it, I just heard we poked something.
@trogdor Yup that's what that's about.
And with that, it's pumpkin time for me. Night all!

ugh

@V2Blast Eh, I didn't really do those systems justice. They're way better when someone experienced runs it.

@MikeQ No worries

5:24 AM
Bonjour

...Is there a tag for Vampire: the Masquerade 20th Anniversary Edition (aka V20)?
I'm not seeing one at a glance at the tags
@kviiri hola
I know basically nothing about the VtM systems

@kviiri bienvenido

@MikeQ it's not the easiest thing to run GSS I won't lie

@V2Blast On a cottage trip, about two hours of driving, one of my car mates explained a VtM game to me at length. Almost the whole trip

I see there is a tag

5:27 AM
It's got a lot of moving parts

@kviiri lol. wow

I never figured out if that particular one was a video game or TTRPG :D

and I did find this meta:

Q: Should we add V20/M20 etc tags for White Wolf Games?

EldebrynIn the recent years Onyx Path has released 20-year anniversary editions of popular white wolf games which include both mechanical and plot/setting changes, like the removal of the metaplot that formed the World of Darkness in previous editions. To my knowledge, Vampire, Werewolf and, recently, Ma...

I think honey heist is largely about improving though

Someone did bring up the topic of such a tag (presumably misremembered) here:
@Upper_Case Funny enough, I can't find the V20 tag anywhere in my previous questions about VtM. Did it get lost somewhere? — Ivan T. 23 hours ago

5:28 AM
But I haven't run honey heist myself so
Not entirely sure

and there are several questions about V20. But I don't know enough about the VtM games to know whether it's different enough from other editions to have its own tag or what

@trogdor I found HH easier to work with, since there's usually some in-game challenges or objectives baked into the premise. With the GSS scenario I tried, there really weren't any goals, so... I think everyone got bored.

(I don't even know VtM well enough to know whether it'd make sense to ask in meta about the above :P )

@MikeQ yeah that's what I would have guessed

Q: What to do about a GM that does not allow for out-of-character discussion?

LuckMy GM tries to keep the game moving by not allowing for in-party discussion or out-of-character questions or remarks. For example, our party travels across town to an NPC's place with the intention of interrogating and intimidating them once we arrive. The GM skips over our travel or any prepara...

7:10 AM
Yesterday the first NPC I created for my first homebrew campaign died.. I feel strangely sad.

7:23 AM
@MatteoDevi What was their name?
What were they like?

7:46 AM
Hi

@V2Blast Krimir, an half-orc ranger, former slave in athkatla.

@PierreCathé hello hello

@PierreCathé morning
@V2Blast His old "master" was a powerful wizard that liked to collect strange animals. Krimir job was to take care of those animals

Krimir sounds like a decent sort. I can definitely understand feeling sad about the loss of an NPC you put some effort/depth into - it's much like losing a character as a player.

Among those there was a blink dog with wich krimir created a strong bond. On his deathbed, his master gifted krimir with freedom, and said blink dog. He then went to live as a ranger in a remote village. There he helped the players a lot with an orc problem, finally gaining the trust of the village.
Unfortunately, he died tring to recover a strong artifact from a night hag. He left the poor blink dog alone :(
@V2Blast yep.. It's both sad and nice.. to be able to experience those feelings within a game :)

@MatteoDevi Sounds like a heroic death <3

@KorvinStarmast I work near the airport, in a tallish office building overlooking the flat areas that entails. Was fun watching the forests in the distance disappear and then the horizon just kept creeping closer...
sadly-ish, none remains on the ground. The earth is still warm and there wasn't enough snow to cool it enough

"My fingers haven't worked for two days. What's wrong, and if they don't start working again will I die? (I searched on google)"

Did you hit them?

@goodguy5 No, that was a question on a site I mod.
For whatever reason, Dr. Google has replaced much of medical care. I remain continually amazed at how little people know about their own bodies and how much quackery/ignorance/snake oil is firmly believed.

1:57 PM
hello
how is everyone

JohnP has a finger problem
I'm fine though
how are you?

I'm okay. I'm dealing with the general chat on Meta
god it's kinda crazy in there

Whereas I am steering clear of it and having a jolly good time

yeah

No need to voluntarily poison one's mind with other people's venom :p

2:06 PM
@PierreCathé Unless you're trying to trick a mind flayer into poisoning itself.

it's actually pretty civil.

@MikeQ Ooh nice

@Gwideon Try the mod only chats. :|

but yeah the drama is just kinda crazy
i think I'll avoid that

Now I'm imagining a secret society who sneaks into mind flayer brain farms and insults the brains until they're too depressed to be edible

2:11 PM
anyways moving on

Can mind flayers uh... Flay each other?

I....don't actually know

@goodguy5 This is becoming dirty :p

Yeah

@goodguy5 Varies by lore. In some settings they share a hivemind, so flaying each other's brains wouldn't be productive. Empty calories, so to speak.

2:14 PM
I'm off, don't be too naughty

So i'm not sure what to talk about

@Gwideon ...I like coffee.

@V2Blast Was gonna post this if noone else had. The Twilight Domain Cleric is dope, and I'm revising my progression plans for my Shadow Sorcerer to include either a 2 level Cleric dip or a 6 level Cleric Dip.

@Xirema Does that synergize? They seem kinda redundant.

hey how would some one make the medic from tf2 in dnd

2:27 PM
Well, the dude lost his medical license and still calls himself a doctor, so you could start with the Charlatan background, maybe?

@Gwideon Any sort of build that does healing and debuffing, I imagine. Cleric, celestial warlock, divine sorc, artificer (UA)

I was thinking of doing a celestial warlock

@MikeQ It works for my specific build. My Shadow Sorcerer is a gishy Sorcerer, relying especially on spells like Shadow Blade and Booming Blade / Green Flame Blade. One of the features the Twilight Domain grants is the Channel Divinity (which recharges on a Short Rest) to create a zone of "Twilight" (Dim Light) within 30 feet for a minute, which A) Gives me Temp HP, B) protects me from Fear/Charm effects, and C) (most importantly) activates the Advantage I can get with Shadow Blade.

> 30-foot radius, and is filled with dim light. The sphere moves with you, and it lasts for 1 minute or until you are incapacitated or die.
Hmm... That is a neat combo. Also works with shadow monk.

Yessss
My character is currently planned to be A) a Drow, with B) Shadow Origin Sorcerer, with C) Twilight Domain Cleric powers.
I have achieved peak goth, my power is unstoppable.

2:33 PM
@Xirema It could be stopped by daylight

@MikeQ Don't forget poisoning and tossing bombs.

@Xirema I'm still seeing a concerning lack of eyeliner though.

@Yuuki I have three different ways to cast the spell Darkness, what do I need eyeliner for? XD

Q: How does the UA 2019 artificer's Reloading Weapon infusion affect Matt Mercer's Gunslinger firearms?

King-of-DeceitI am creating a multiclassed 2019 UA artificer/Gunslinger fighter, and a question has been raised. If I infuse a gun with the Repeating Weapon artificer infusion, how does that affect the reloading property of the gun? The description of the artificer's Repeating Shot infusion says: Item: ...

@Xirema The eyeliner is to unlock "Harry Potter fanfiction" tiers of gothness

2:44 PM
@MikeQ ::shudder:: fanfic. A morass of every sophomoric fantasy put forth in less than subpar prose.

@MikeQ It's a shame I already named her Ophelia, because it would be a good excuse to just name her Ebony Dark'ness Dimension Raven Way.

@JohnP I mean, there's some good stuff, some really good stuff. But it's like wading through a sewer to find a nice gem.
Fanfiction is just fiction about existing fiction. So the proportion of good to bad is just about the same as literature as a whole.

The only real difference is the extremely low bar of effort needed to make it, so there's a far greater volume than traditional fiction. And when the volume of "X" get large enough, the odds you'll find an example of "X" that is soul-crushingly awful is greater than the odds you'll find something of the same level in a small volume "Y".

@Xirema With self-publishing being a thing, I don't think the bar is that different anymore.

@Yuuki Eh, Self-Publishing is still a level of effort above "make an account on AO3 and hit publish twice a week".
But yes, self-publishing definitely brings the two closer to parity than the Fanzine-fanfiction from the pre-internet era.

3:05 PM
@Yuuki mmm...not really. Published fiction has had someone that wades through the sewers to find the gems before you. They may not be quality gems, but they are gems. Fanfic is (With admittedly some exceptions) the rocks you grind up for concrete.

Actually, for anyone really wanting a deep dive into the theory and merits (or, in one particular case, lack there-of) of Fanfiction, I strongly recommend Folding Ideas' "A Lukewarm Defense of Fifty Shades of Grey (The Movie)", where over three episodes, spanning nearly three hours, Dan Olsen pulls apart the history, context, culture and tropes of the Fifty Shades of Grey books; what makes the books uniquely awful and how the movies [tried to] elevate them into worthwhile works of fiction.
I'm not linking it here because it broaches NSFW territory (obviously, given the subject matter) but you can easily find it on youtube with that title search.

@Xirema oh yeah, I forgot FSOG was originally twilight fanfic.

@JohnP Well, that's by design. Mitchell did a very good job scrubbing Masters of the Universe from the internet in every corner she could, the only real remnants being the people who actively tried to archive her work.

@JohnP My wife is becoming a google based hypochondriac. I love her but it drives me a little nuts.
@goodguy5 That sounds a bit R Rated, or is that just my weird mind working?

@KorvinStarmast Happens to everyone. I convinced myself I had hemochromatomia once.
@Xirema Masters of the Universe? How does that relate to 50 shades?

@JohnP That's what it was called before it was renamed to Fifty Shades of Grey.

Ah. gr0k.

(I'm assuming that was completely unacceptable due to obvious copyright issues. XD)

3:31 PM
heeeeeeeere we aaaaare
whoops no

Anyhow @Xirema what are your thoughts on the other two UA subclasses?

The Wildfire Druid Circle seems fascinating. In terms of RP potential most of what I'd do with it is already enabled by the Spores druid, but it feels like we've been missing the opportunity for a properly Flame-based Druid for awhile. Curious how it compares to @KorvinStarmast's "Circle of the Flame" homebrew.
Also, that Blazing Endurance feature is.... REALLY good.

@Xirema Last I checked, Korvin's homebrew was sort of a blastery/tanky druid
Whereas hot & spicy wildfire druid seems more about choices between heal vs hurt

Like, the Fire damage is whatever, but 5x your Druid Level in temporary Hit Points?
If you have a constitution of 10, that's basically a full heal, except you can gain additional healing on top of it.
The Wizard subclass is alright, but it feels gimmicky. That one I don't really anticipate showing up in an actual sourcebook.

Wildfire Spirit is a further insult to the beast master ranger. RIP animal companions.

3:44 PM
@MikeQ Maybe. I get the sense, given how similar in execution it is to the Artificer companions, it might be a trial run for how they're eventually going to rework the Beast Master Ranger.

@Xirema I never did that last revision since the game I was going to play test it in never happened. (RL beats D&D once again, sadly)

Q: Should we have a tag for Wendy's Feast of Legends RPG?

RykaraWendy's has released an RPG called Feast of Legends. It's a hilarious and incredibly good parody of D&D but it's also a legitimate RPG in its own right. Should we have a tag for it or just enjoy the joke and move on?

@TheOracle IIRC, the stance on these things is always "we'll get there when we get there".
tl;dr someone has to ask a question first

6:46 PM
Is there a way to vote or suggest that a question be taken off hold after an edit clarified things?

Open a meta post if it seems like it really needs attention.

well I was going to leave a comment then I noticed the one other problem which probably will keep it on hold. also I can't access meta at work for some reason
the lack of a system tag is probably enough to keep it on hold as unclear

@V2Blast I can see how those are related.

@V2Blast Or is he more of a bod there?

@Yuuki yep
@GcL booooooooooooo

since almost nobody was around when I mentioned this last night I discovered that with the new UA the previous maximum range of Eldritch Blast has been made to look tiny
We've gone from the previous max of 1320 feet to about 3.7 miles

@Himitsu_no_Yami I did see what you posted in the Elemental Plane of Math.
Gotta love the edge-cases they forgot to consider in UA. XD

7:22 PM
right lol
and if the issue becomes that you can't see the target from 3.7 miles away there are still ways around that

I really hope the Twlight Domain Cleric makes its way to a sourcebook.

honestly I want the Druid to make it and the Warlock. The Warlock seems cool and the druid seems both cool and hilariously abusable if they don't change it too much
if anyone looks over this and wants to see how I got my range it's all in here

@V2Blast Yes, and? They are relatively low traffic (For a while on Fitness I was essentially the only active mod). Rory Alsop is mod on 6 sites, although he is one of the "on leave" peeps, of which I think 3 or 4 are graduated sites.
There are quite a few mods that have multiple sites.

@JohnP Heh, I was just surprised. I think I only knew you modded Martial Arts (probably because you've talked about martial arts here before) - didn't know/forgot about the other two

@V2Blast That's my newest, actually. Fitness, then MedSci, then MA. And Medsci is...a bit of a cesspool.

7:32 PM
ah

@JohnP Sounds like you could use some antiseptic?

@Rubiksmoose Eh, I've been of the opinion that it should cease to exist as a site. It's a good concept, but incredibly bad in practice. Even with the scope change attempt.
But, I received assurances that measures were going to be taken to help remedy it from the PtB, so we shall see.

Fingers crossed?

@Rubiksmoose Ehh...I am not holding my breath. It took a year of badgering to get the scope change through.

1 hour later…
8:45 PM
@Himitsu_no_Yami hilariously abusable I can do without. I think that's why they toss up these trial balloons in the UA: to find out where some of the holes are.

@KorvinStarmast I mean, as a[-n aspiring] game designer, forgetting to put a range limit on the "cast spells through your not-a-familiar" feature is easily one of the first things I'd patch. But it is fun to find strange little quirks like that.

9:00 PM
@KorvinStarmast lol

@trogdor I've seen you posting a lot of fun stuff with ONI, and I wonder if my son is going to get addicted to that. It sounds like something he'd get a kick out of.
@Xirema To be sure, finding the holes is a game in itself, hence our Cheese mate. :)

@KorvinStarmast it is very fun, it's like having an ant farm except you can also tell them what to do,.. mostly
sometimes they will dig where you told them but in a dumb way that gets' them trapped and they suffocate :/

I think it'd fun to have things hilariously abusable as long as it's not overpowered because of the abusibility which in this case it wouldn't really be cus there's bound to be other factors preventing it
Also, Xirema just increased the range so far it makes the previous range looks like it didn't change from base...

about ua druid ... it is a little like mine, but quite different ... Wildfire spirit:
More powerful than beast master in combat
Too many features
6th level: OK
10th lvl: 5 times per long rest. Wow, nice feature.
Blazing Endurance : only if Wild FIre spirit is around? Consume one use of wildfire spirit?
Could use a tweak, or two, but I like it a lot all around theme.
And I can do without the true namer ... arrgh, who keeps asking for this stuff?
Learn the true name of a party member and cast 3-5 free bless spells per long rest? Should stick to the bane one ... that one's OP
Also, needs to recharge on short or long rest. Power creep again ...
@V2Blast The only feature that like is relentless name at 14th. The rest is a bit too fiddly for my taste
