12:00 AM
@Shalvenay hello

how're things going?

12:17 AM
(I'm still sad she had to cancel "Sisiutl’s Children".)

1:00 AM
hey there @KorvinStarmast

@Shalvenay hello, I am browsing the previous chats about eagles in trees in Estonia. brb

@KorvinStarmast I suspect it was less a declaration about legal truth and more an observation of commonly held beliefs.
A nation's impression of its own values is often at odds with its expression of those values, much less understanding of such between nations.

2:11 AM
hey again @KorvinStarmast

@Shalvenay Hello Shal, I am looking into hw magical a gorgon is in light of a comment under that answer on garden gnomes

@KorvinStarmast LOL

Monstrosities seem to be inherently magical, mostly.

hops on a ET44AC, challenges a gorgon to tug o' war with it

This goes back to one of Crawford's SA rulings about dragon breath. A dragon is a magical creature, but dragon breath isn't "magic" per se, apparently, which means that the damage type is what it is: fire, acid, lightning ...

2:17 AM
@KorvinStarmast aye -- dragonbreath is probably simply evolved venom that the dragon spits, at least for fire and acid
lightning's quasi-plausible but'd take some weirdness (imagine a dragon with a laser on its tongue ;)

I try not to mix evolution with fantastical beasts ... sometimes, it's better to let it be fantastical and magical. :)
@Shalvenay I am reaching back a few editions, but there were some really unusual dragons in either dragon mag, or in 2e, that had features something like that.
I need to look up the gem based dragons, one of them would be a good fit for a laser I think.

well...I'm simply riffing on how RL prototype lightning weapons work
using a laser pulse to create an ionized path through the air, then discharging an arc down that path
voila, lightning bolt

Directed energy?
Some laser based effects are sensitive to atmospheric conditions ... hmmm, I am getting into projects I don't feel comfortable discussing in public.
@Shalvenay Did you read the original Pern books? Dragonflight, etc? McCaffrey did a neat job in trying to make the dragons "realistic" in her SF/Fantasy fusion.

@KorvinStarmast I have not

@KorvinStarmast I was definitely in love with Mellony as a pre-teen.

2:29 AM
@Shalvenay I don't know if they are dated, at this point, but I liked the way she built the world of Pern in the first three books. I'd recommend those books highly.
@nitsua60 Menolly of pern, or her busty sister Mellony?

@KorvinStarmast The harper.
(It's been decades.)

Pern harper or FR Harper? :) Arrggghhhh.... trope overlap

@KorvinStarmast Pern, dammit!
=D

@nitsua60 But of course.

I think I came across the harper hall trilogy first, and only years later discovered the first trilogy. I think it was even cooler to "go back" and learn about the earlier stuff after already being enchanted with the world.

2:33 AM
When choosing a faction for the ToA, I was interested in Harpers but ... as I dug into who Hal is, Harpers made no sense.

Menolly by the seashore is definitely my first, strong memory of the reading.

The Harper stuff was pretty good, but I only recall reading the first one while I was at sea. Oddly, I never followed up and got the rest of the books. Hmmm, second hand books may get a visit from me this weekend. I hear Pern has aged pretty well ...

(And Shalv: you might hear dim echoes of your fractal exploration of the Hall of Dragonriders if you ever read the Pern stuff.)
@KorvinStarmast I... don't really dig 5e's factions. At least as implemented.
But you might be able to join the Flaming Fist if you like!
[ducks pots and pans thrown by @Shalvenay]

Clunky, but as AL is an option for this char, I figured I'd pick one. (LOL, me join the flaming fist. Snork!)

Take it over from the inside?

2:37 AM
@nitsua60 Not sure if Hal is that clever, but that's a hell of a good idea of we find a magic item that allows Hal to be better at deception.
@nitsua60 That said, I think our current questing ought to be to either try to figure out the curse, or I introduce the leads I have/had at the harbor from the harbor master once we (hopefully) deal with the FF.
Heck, that's tomorrow night!
Hmm, looks like bed time for me. Early rise in the AM. Visit with you all soon.

Night!

McCaffrey's novels have interesting worldbuilding, but the characters tend to be flat, their plots repetitive, and the sex/gender portrayals... uncomfortable, especially with regards to consent.
Overall I got the impression she tends to stretch each series idea over about three times too many novels.
(I have a soft spot for Decision at Doona though.)

6 hours later…
9:19 AM
@KorvinStarmast @BESW Commonly held beliefs and behaviour of corporations. But the EU also really has a literal chartered human right to privacy that expresses it in no uncertain terms (which other laws implement or get tested against), but USA doesn't have that expressed as a fundamental right.
It sounds like the USA has a right to privacy similar to how Australia has a right to free speech: it doesn't exist except that it is recognised as existing in the space created by other laws and rights. That can be an issue though, since then there's only principles staking out the matter in very specific avenues.
Usually it just gets respected by lawyers, but the lack of a fallback fundamental principle and right on the matter can leave things in grey areas where privacy or free speech may have been perceived to be violated, but it was not violated in any specific avenue.
That impacted situations like various revelations through the years with regards to Facebook and how rapidly and omnidirectionally it was hoovering up and sharing all the personal data it could with minimal or no checks, including most recently the Cambridge Analytica discovery. In the USA that gets fixed by social pressure; in the EU some of those revelations were dealt with by Facebook being sued against that privacy right & instructed on data it couldn't collect.
(the most recent EU vs Facebook lawsuit I recall is from a couple of years ago, where Facebook was told it simply was not allowed to track or collect any data on EU citizens who weren't a member of its platform.)

4 hours later…
1:39 PM
@NautArch @KorvinStarmast @trogdor @Shalvenay something's come up and I need to be a little late tonight. Alright if we start 1 hour behind usual, 10pm EST? Unfortunately I won't be able to run any later, so it'll be a slightly shorter session.

1 hour later…
2:52 PM
@nitsua60 that's fine
my motto is, that's fine XD
I am awake way past my sleep time
can't come up with a better motto right now

2 hours later…
4:34 PM
Hey people
Especially @Shalvenay, to be true.

4:58 PM
@nitsua60 @trogdor @Shalvenay @NautArch That's 9 CST, I am good to go. Nadarr, Rrauj, Blud, what say we meet a bit earlier and discuss details, maybe a bit more In Character background sharing as Shal had mentioned a few weeks ago. What say you all?
@BESW The first three were decent. Agree that her worldbuilding is her strong suit. You might want to check publishing dates for context in re roles/gender tropes. As to the follow on series, yeah, probably milked that cow for all it was worth, as Martin is doing with GoT prequels. Won't any author tend to do that at least a little bit? Feed the fans as long as they have a hunger for more?

5:18 PM
@KorvinStarmast Absolutely every author ever except <insert your favorite author here>!
;)

@kviiri ... that actually sounds extremely apt :P
Author anounces spinoff series and/or new sequels. Most onlookers: "They're milking it." Super fans: "Rejoice! More stories!" Some super fans: "They're milking it."

@KorvinStarmast should be fine
hey there @Zachiel, how're things going?
hey as well @ACuriousMind

@Shalvenay I'll be on about 8 to 8:15 PM Central Time. We can all fall in as needed, but I'd like to have (if life permits) all four of us on before DM arrives so we can be "ready" and have "game on" happen when DM is able to make it.

@doppelgreener Sometimes I feel the best criticism comes from the most die-hard fans, and I really like it that way

@Shalvenay Well, except for the fact that I have fried my brain while attempting to find ways to teleport an unwilling target, I'm fine thanks XD

5:28 PM
Some people have two modes: when they describe the work they like to non-fans, it's all praise. When they describe it to other fans, it can get quite salty :)

@kviiri as long as we're careful to separate "fans who understand and enjoy the show but can critique it effectively" from "fans who are hunting down the author on social media to harass them over the latest character development ruining the show and/or being inconsistent with said fan's internal model for the character"

@doppelgreener Somewhat ironically, the latter kind of "fan" probably fits the etymology better...
I personally try to maintain a fresh eye on things I've liked, at all times. Not that I always succeed. No one's free from bias.

@kviiri As Zach Braff (JD from Scrubs) once said: "A picture of me screwing one of my fans" - Followed by a picture of him being surprised while tightnening some screws on an electric fan.

@Zachiel Hah :D

> By the way, after I finished screwing that fan, it blew me all night.
Boy, the "9 seconds left to edit this post" thing was scary, but at least the quote is faithful now.

5:35 PM
XD I <3 Scrubs

Another beautiful dusky sky in Eagleland, Estonia
I've been re-reading my 4e materials while waiting for that friend to enumerate the stuff he has for sale
Liking it in general, but some of these powers are far more complex than I remembered. More bookkeeping might be involved than I recall

5:53 PM
@kviiri We've got it up on our living room tv. Just discovered that it had sound and now were even more excited lol.

@Rubiksmoose Yeah! Sadly, it'll be all dark within half an hour or so

Sadly. But our cleaning efficiency will probably go up lol

6:29 PM
RIP eagle feed

I grow so addicted to bird feeds, it's good that they make me go cold turkey every once in a while.
But now it's time to post bird videos and pictures to survive the night.

7:26 PM
@nitsua60 that time works for me. Definitely can't extend past normal time, either.

@kviiri They need a camera with an IR illuminator. Works fine at 0 lux. Latest models with starlight technology also work in color at just 0.1 lux.

@Zachiel Not sure, but don't some birds have IR vision?

@kviiri I'm no expert in birds, but I also write camera manuals and datasheets for a living

I mean, IR illumination could theoretically disturb the bird

@kviiri That's a possibility. I wouldn't want to be the camera that disturbs an eagle.
(And yes, it's also rude towards any kind of bird.)

7:40 PM
@Zachiel 0.1 lux? that's nothing compared to this guy: nuvucameras.com/products/hnu-camera

My great program works! maybe
It produces an ostensibly correct output, a truth table for 98000 boolean variables... but I have no idea how to read this, now

@Shalvenay Well, that looks like a specialized camera. I'm only informed about current state-of-the-art CCTV cameras.
And maybe it's 0.01, my memory is bad.

@Zachiel it is -- it's designed for the extremes of low-light work

8:00 PM
I'm thinking at @Shalvenay because I know them to be good with this sort of things, but anybody with enough D&D 3.5e experience might help. I have a battle plan and I need to check it for blatant flaws. Possibly, in a place that's not available to the public, in order to avoid spoilers. Who's in?
(You're still the one who gets into problems because their solutions are too effective, right? XD)

@Zachiel not in 3.5e they aren't :P

@Shalvenay Darn.
I'll be back when I'll switch to freeform XD

8:16 PM
@Zachiel heheh

2 hours later…
10:02 PM
> My experience as DM was that as soon as NPC's just said 'hi', the chances of violence went way down. The NPC being a demon didn't matter.
The post itself is about young gamers befriending wolves instead of fighting 'em.

10:27 PM
> -What's a cult, mom? -It's a startup church.

@Zachiel heheheh :D

10:43 PM
@Shalvenay hiya

@ACuriousMind how're things going?

@Shalvenay Very well :)

alright here

I'm afraid I'm busy as usual and can't really offer a timeslot for the next two weeks

ah, got it

It's not as if I have no free time, but timezones are terrible :P

@KorvinStarmast just saw your questions about the FF patrol--sorry. Responded in the forum. (cc:@Shalvenay @trogdor @NautArch)

11:43 PM
@nitsua60 (cc:@Shalvenay @trogdor @NautArch) response in forum, further details there
