@doppelgreener I don't see the point in adding a warning. I see the entire effort as picking at scabs for no value added. But I think the intent was positive; I tried to lay out a method for game rec question vetting. Got no response in workshopping, and mostly "thanks but bug off" as a response.
I tried to sincerely help with a RAW data analysis and from both sides got "thanks, up yours" as the response (though it was phrased more gently than that)
I tried to be helpful in the "what is wrong" but that was just a bucket of fail, with good intention on my part.
The model of a flesh based algorithm can be taken too far, and I think it is being taken too far. Meat space is the more valuable place. No value added in picking at this scab. It's fine to try and perfect actual code. Code Is Not a human being.
The road to hell is paved with good intentions. What problem is being solved? Nothing.
No more from me tonight, those are some of the thoughts kicking around as I ponder the value in engagement.
Good night, best wishes, and happy gaming.
I am on the other side of the globe, so I guess it's "good morning" for you?

Those thoughts may need a bit more time in the hopper. I'm having a hard time understanding what you're getting at.

12:35 AM
I'm a big fan of "what's the problem we're trying to solve?" but also of assuming that if people are suggesting solutions then they do see a problem worth solving.

@BESW I'm looking at this statistics meta question and thinking "Most of these fit the metric, and the ones that don't are just a sign of people being imperfect"

I guess what I'm saying is, if people are suggesting solutions and I don't see the problem they're trying to solve, I should ask for help seeing the problem instead of telling them there isn't one.

Makes sense. That's currently the stage I'm at, basically.

That way we're all talking about the same thing, at least, even if we don't agree it's a problem.
Personally I know that the RAW tag has significant beneficial applications to the site's goals and praxis, but if often feels like the only reason we aren't using some other set of tools for the same purpose is that if we got rid of the RAW tag it'd just get made again.

This seems to be the much more difficult question of "how do we get people to know what our scope is" as opposed to "what is our scope?"

12:43 AM
Mmm, combined with a term that has extremely variable meanings and implications across a group so diverse it's hard to call it a community.

@BESW Ah, the RAW tag argument came up again?

I suspect the use of that particular phrase throws up extra blockades, but it's so deeply embedded in the lexicon that we're probably stuck with it.

I think RAW's primary use, as it's actually used, is to indicate a playstyle.
Thanks for the context by the way.

@WrongOnTheInternet It's not.

@Miniman I know this topic has been beaten to death, but could you link me to why it's not? I don't particularly care to remove it in any case.

12:48 AM
Generally speaking the community usually comes down on the side of not tagging for playstyles.

Q: What, exactly, is the RAW tag for?

T. SarAs the title says. I'm starting to think that there are a few different views of what "RAW" means here on RPG.SE. I think that it is time to sit down and pinpoint the "correct" way to use the corresponding tag, so we can prevent further confusion. I will list how I see some people using this tag...

Enjoy the many, many diverse opinions.

@WrongOnTheInternet One of the first questions I asked on this site. I didn't ask it out of any desire to play by RAW, I just wanted to know what the RAW was.

I think RAW can be seen as a theory, or lens, as used in critical analysis fields like film crit or lit crit. But I'm not an expert and I have no horse in this race. I'm just an opinionated bystander.

Note that, despite both tagging it and indicating my desire for rules-only answers in the question, I still received multiple answers that had nothing to do with the rules, they still got upvoted, and SSD still removed the tag when the new policy was formed.
@BESW That sounds about right to me, although I'm also no expert. I certainly won't say I have no horse in this race, though.

(My answer to the meta linked above, which says basically the same thing but in more detail, has thus far gone largely accepted and unchallenged. Take that as you will.)

Ah. So it's not a meta-tag then?

12:57 AM
@WrongOnTheInternet Depends (greatly) on who you ask.

@Miniman Yeah. I think even if it was, and it was an issue, it would still do less damage to leave it than it would to remove it.

@WrongOnTheInternet Do you mean to remove it from the site as a whole, or from individual questions?
Because I don't think anyone's (currently) suggesting it be removed from the site as a whole (although they certainly have in the past).

Removing it from the site as a whole. Certain questions shouldn't have it, because they aren't about it.
I'm just wondering how we got here.

@WrongOnTheInternet As someone who wasn't around for the whole process, and has a very biased POV about it, I'm definitely the wrong person to ask about that.

Well, could we hypothetically ask an on-topic rpg question about RAW alone (in which RAW is the only tag)? Yes, we can ask what it is and how it came to be.
Given that it's linked to a whole mix of lens, playstyle, and subculture.

Asking "What is RAW" would be a question with that sole tag, though.

For sure!
Hmmm...

Those tags are also pretty clearly secondary to RAW on those questions though. The question would be just as valid with the one tag.
Anyhow... this statistics meta.

In theory, all tags should be sufficient as the only tag on a question.
(It's one of the basic checks for whether a tag is useful, though some Stacks make necessary exceptions for specific categories of their topic.)

@BESW Yes, that's why I presented it. I wasn't initially convinced that it wasn't a meta-tag, and having an example question where it could be the only tag means that particular criticism is gone.

1:15 AM
@WrongOnTheInternet Ah, I get it.

1:31 AM
I have d&d tomorrow which will require me not to think about the Thirteenth Doctor for several hours at a time
Nice spread. What's game night look like at *your* house? https://twitter.com/d20monkey/status/885958601285742595
@BESW This is the kind of thing that lets me know I've got exactly the right people in my feeds.

Q: How can I make sure my character is awesome enough?

PureferretThis question pulls quite a lot from Brian Ballsun-Stanton's paper on constrained optimisation (i.e. making your character awesome), so that might be a good thing to read. I know that in D&D there is an equation to show the damage per second (DPS) of your striker, which is quite handy for checki...

Can anyone fix the mendeley link to Dr. Ballsun-Stanton's paper?

Yes, but it'll take a little while to figure out which link is best for access vs rot.
That seems to be the best I can find right now.
I'll try to ask Brian next time I see him.

@BESW Thank you :D

@doppelgreener The idea for Beer Me was to avoid the players using it as a projectile weapon while it flies in. They already did (for an admittedly sweet finishing move) in my Homebrew system. [In other words, needs to be balanced. Fighting a tournament for a "flask of oil/create water, lesser" cantrip seems... ok. Especially since it's restricted from being learned via class levels.

Q: Balancing a campaign for newbie and veteran players alike

Demonwolf37So I'm running my first custom world campaign. This will be the first full campaign I've run, and I'm a little nervous. The party consists of 4 complete newbies, and my partner who's a veteran player - who's built a warlock which by level 8 could take out small countries (I've been assured that...

I've written a quick welcome message, if someone wants to write something better, you are more than welcome, I will delete my message then.

10:15 AM
@Baskakov_Dmitriy To me it seems it could be system-agnostic. There may be some specific techniques to solve the problem in certain systems, but most of the ideas will be general
It may be a duplicate, though

10:35 AM
@Szega You can possibly say it in the comments. :)

@Baskakov_Dmitriy Just thought it might spark a discussion better suited to chat, but sure
Also cannot find a duplicate, which surprises me a bit

Making it system agnostic artificially broadens the scope of the question, and will almost certainly make answers less useful for the querent.

I do not think the main point of an answer would be something specific to 5e or PF.
If we stick to combat, then power levels, number of enemies, terrain, etc.. can be applied everywhere
If not, then it becomes even more detached from the system

The main point of an answer is an answer that is most useful to the person asking the question. As I commented, balancing is very much dependent on system. Dungeon World is completely different to 5e etc

10:50 AM
This situation also could not arise in DW AFAIK

which is what makes it system dependant

no, it still could be present in many different systems
we have pretty much the same problem in a shadowrun campaign
and there are no warlocks there, so the question is not about that

but how you balance a shadow run game is completely different to how you balance a Savage worlds game
the mechanics are key

(not saying it would be a solution, but) throwing in twice the number of enemies could be done everywhere
unless you introduce enemies to specifically counter the caster
there is also the option to just say no to the player

I'm not arguing that you could give a system agnostic answer, but a system specific one is almost certainly going to be much more useful to the querent
we have huge amounts of precedent on this
we do not artificially broaden questions

10:58 AM
I am really interested, can you tell me an answer that would be specific to a system and unusable in others?

No, sorry I will not as I'm busy and doing more important things :)

OK. The question is open to anyone, as I seem to be in the minority with my opinion.

12:05 PM
@Papayaman1000 Oh, yeah, that makes sense. It was awesomely flavorful though and I couldn't resist turning it up to 11.

12:34 PM
@Szega "The wizard looks too powerful? Have enemies try to sunder his spell component pouch / steal his spellbook". Not optimal on the fun side but viable in some editions of D&D, completely useless or irrelevant in some other editions.
(Or at least that's what came to my mind, I'm not trying to argue it's true, I'm just providing material that might be pertinent)

@KorvinStarmast Honestly I'm left wondering if you read the whole post after these messages, because I showed the problem I am hoping to address, and what the point would be. If you did, I'll summarise: more than half the time the OP uses the tag it's incorrect (defined in this case as "editors remove it later because it doesn't fit"), tag warning will help OPs judge when it's correct, tag warning reduces incorrect usage, less maintenance/corrections needed, tag used more effectively.
I cannot think of another tag where we'd see similar statistics, so I have not proposed a tag warning for other tags.

I get offended by the Angry GM's failure to write the words he/she/it means to write. Because reasons (some swearing, so possibly NSFW).

In a recent page of Kill Six Billion Demons: a whole abandoned room of clutter turns out to be a room completely full of bloodthirsty mimics. The alt-text: "Little known fact: (Spoiler)'s interior designer was the infamous warlock Gari Gy'Gax."

12:52 PM
And now, something completely different.
I have had my usual friday night D&D 4e game yesterday. The main dish was a combat against overwhelming forces that was intended to drive the characters to run for their life (or pull off a diplomacy stunt to stop the fight, or get captured - really, the actual outcome is just possible ramifications of the story so I'm not really awry with how it went).
Anyway, after "enemies keep coming" - "this enemy seems well avove your capabilities" - "from the noise, it seems like there's a whole army downstairs" the party still tries to tur the staircase into
> Papers, got it here. Just finished reading it myself. Run. Egyptian Mail, morning edition. Run.

nwp
@Zachiel A pretty standard situation I think. Players never give up when you want them to.
I do like the "get captured" contingency plan though.

@nwp Their main problem, I think, is that they managed to get to the choke point, turning "Enemies are swarming us!" into "We can kill them one by one as they get here". But it is turning into an attrition war that they're going to lose by encounter design, and they didn't realize in time. Now they realized and the ranger is trying to get the party on the move. "Come away!" But the fighter's reply was "How?"

@doppelgreener My reaction isn't to much based on you answer, there are multiple, as the question itself.

(I'm referencing my question there, not my answer, just fyi. The question proposes the idea of a RAW tag warning, my answer just proposes what should be written in it.)

nwp
@Zachiel Well, they probably have something. Invisibility, polymorph, a window to jump out of, some cloud of time buying, darkness, .... And if not they get captured and there is a whole new story arc about the evil guy giving them an ultimatum/deal to retrieve the item of fetch-questiness to buy their freedom with the option of breaking out.

1:07 PM
@nwp Ah, they're not fighting the evil guy. They've been mistaken for evil cultists and dimension-hopping invaders by the not-evil church of the current god of death, because they bear the magically imprinted symbols of the old god of death..

@Zachiel, if the fighter is asking "How" you have pretty much cracked the nut. Tell them they can hear a large force coming towards the choke point, but the forces behind them seem weaker. They might overhear a commander call to his troops to wait for reinforcements.
@Zachiel, in other words, once they ask how, you can give them the answer.

I see. I think he sees letting the stronger enemies come into the room as a bad choice. But the alternative is not going.

Remember the LOTR scene where the party says "We have to make them fear this room"? Go for something like that. If the party can bring down any sort of leader-type, the enemy can fall back for a moment to regroup. Make sure the party knows that's their chance to escape.
Your party is trying to be reasonable, so that's good. Nobody is saying, "I'll get my dagger back, or die trying!" Once they see withdrawing offers them hope, I think they will go.

1:43 PM
hey there @Papayaman1000

hey hey @Shalvenay

how're things going?

Swell!

alright here

Excellent!
So my player wants to make a massive reference and have a tournament sponsored by Hetap

2:15 PM
@Papayaman1000 yessssssssssss. that's exactly what i was thinking myself when you brought it up yesterday :D

@doppelgreener They're not wrong...

@Papayaman1000 You could have a hero entering the tournament named Heracle who's famous and considered credible, but he's just level 2 or 3.

"Oh, come on, we're not THAT murderous!"
"You killed that captor just now because you 'suspected' he was the one who made the homunculi, despite being tied up in the dungeon of a powerful Fae!"
@doppelgreener Hail Satan! Mr. Satan!
and people wonder why everyone thought anime was satanic in the 90s

@Papayaman1000 hahaha

@doppelgreener Also, issue: My players are "just level 2 or 3".
Perhaps I should also have him deny a huge part of the PCs fighting, like just outright saying that magic doesn't exist and is all just cheap parlour tricks. He... wouldn't be too far off, actually.

2:21 PM
@Papayaman1000 oh. level 1 then. or level 0, commoner class.
@Papayaman1000 LOL

@doppelgreener No class levels, but a d4 hit die and an 18 in Strength regardless.
"I cast SEE INVISIBILITY!"

"SEE INVISIBILITY!"

(there's another layer of joke there: the see invisibility spell is implied to only be that anyway.)
his version just involves a whole lot more talc

@doppelgreener (I thought that was the joke, hook, line, and sinker.)

:D
that works

"You just left out some food. The insects aren't even he--"
"As a RITUAL CASTING!"
"You can't even cast Insect Plague as a ritual!"
"That's just how good a wizard I am!"
@doppelgreener this is beautiful

Misty Step is just a smoke bomb.
or he comments that the warlock's just using smoke bombs.

"I cast IRRESISTIBLE DANCE!"
"How is it oH GOD LEAVE YOUR CLOTHES ON I'LL DO WHATEVER YOU WANT"

"MAGE. ARMOR."
Idea: Hercule actually has Mass Suggestion, Greater as an at-will cast and is too boisterous to notice or care
Side note: Need to make a stat block for him now.

@Papayaman1000 His Blindness spell looks very similar to his Longstrider spell.

@doppelgreener pfft

2:41 PM
@Papayaman1000 that makes sense.
> Announcer: My goodness! That man's begun to *levitate!* I haven't seen that in all my years! Heracle, what do you make of this!?
Heracle: Cranes and wires, Dennis. Cranes and wires. Frankly it's a damn shame that tournaments allow such cheap tricks in this day and age, but a tournament's gotta make money, you know? I guess they're okay with the showmanship because of that. I just hope that wherever their accomplices are, they're listening to this and feeling right ashamed of themselves, y'hear, Dennis?

2:59 PM
hahaha, betcha he would not know what to do when the druid wildshapes into a bear and then summons a flaming treant ;)

> Animatronics these days, Dennis. They could make a movie.
The Dragon Ball Wikia has a pretty comprehensive list of his moves. I've never been so happy.

I just realized I spent a good two hours messing around with this stuff and haven't even made the maps for tomorrow's (was supposed to be today's) campaign

@Papayaman1000 that's superb!!!

Debating builds for acolytes to an apocalypse cult led by a Psion 6//Monk 4//Warblade 2
Partially, I'm never sure how optimized to make a build, and partially I'm never sure how individually customized to make them.

For instance, under my rule-set, a Fighter 2//Scout 2//Psion 2 is cheap, CR/XP-wise, and can deal +1d6 Skirmish, +2/4d6 Psionic Shot, all on bows or touch-attacks

Ah, right, x-stalt
Which is very different from a Psion 6 / Monk 4 / Warblade 2

Yay, the Savage Worlds brand manager has made an account and is answering questions does a little dance
(for those who don't know, he is the rules guru for Savage Worlds, and his clarifications on the official forms are counted effectively as RAW)

hey there @eimyr

good, good, thanks
you?

cool
what are you up to these days, RPG-wise

really not much, sadly

bummer, how so?

neither of the DMs I know who were planning to run campaigns this summer have been able to get to that...

welp, that's not very nice
how about online RP, are you not into that?

@eimyr that's where most of my RP comes from, whether it be more virtual-tabletop type stuff or more play-by-chat stuff
