IT BEGINS! THE HATOCALYPSE IS UPON US
YEEEEESSSSSs
Hmm. I'm tempted to do the Doctors theme again with What's Up, Doc?
But I don't know what "documentation" entails.
I have no idea what that means on this site either
That... does not look like something I could be useful for.
yeah,.... same here

Q: Link to the Stack Overflow Documentation project from the What's Up, Doc? hat

doppelgreenerThe "What's Up, Doc?" hat has a short description of "earn reputation in Docs" and a long description of "earn reputation by contributing to Stack Overflow documentation". Stack Exchange has lots of methods of documentation (such as tag wikis and answers), and only those who've been actively fol...

good idea there
00:14
The Mutant Epoch quick-start rules in the pin have some "roll lots of dice to randomly generate a character" tables, for folks who are into that.
I'm gonna try it out in the NAB.
um,... I got first responder,.......
is that even supposed to be available yet?
0
Q: I just got First Responder (and it isn't New Years yet)

doppelgreenerI've just been awarded First Responder: Despite the fact that shouldn't be possible for 2017 yet: But I did have a message starred in chat around new years' during last Winterbash. Did the year not get set properly? I haven't had a message posted by me starred in chat for a few days. [wea...

ok then, not just me
I think I had the counterpart hat last year too
so you may be on to something there
@BESW Yeah Stackoverflow specific hats are a new addition I think.
@trogdor Nope.
Someone broke the Hat Machine and now free hats are blowing into the street.
well, that hat at any rate,.... unless more are broken
00:29
Well yeah the suspicion is probably right that it was an off-by-one type error.
I did think at first it was a hat for being the first to vote on something, because of the name
but then I read it,... and it looked a lot like it should not be available yet
Oh I think the hat hole was fixed
It doesn't show as collected for me anymore
just looked and I have hat no longer
00:32
me neither!
well, I still have one other hat but still
not that one anymore
the hat I have is great anyway
WELL THEN. TIME TO TURN TO THE DARK SIDE.
But I'll keep wearing my illicit hat anyway
lol
one does appreciate a good evil mask
Oh no they took my hat away for reals.
I guess it was a caching thing
@doppelgreener Oh nice
look at that dashing chap
It was pretty good hat placement if I do say so myself.
it was indeed
00:36

A: First Responder hat of the 2016 winter bash

balphaTo be fair, the hat description post a message in chat within ±12 hours of the UTC New Year’s begin that gets starred does not mention which New Years… … and so it was accidentally awarded for New Years 2016 :( Fixed now, and the hats removed (while we tend to let users keep hats that wer...

haaaaats
I am really glad some of the hats are so easy to get
at the very least this one anyway
you can earn and wear it pretty much as soon as hatmass has started
00:56
My conclusion about Mutant Epoch's chargen is that it's probably a lot more "fun" in the full version, where tables that only have four choices in the QSR have thirty or more options.
As-is, the QSR is an interesting glimpse and I suspect the full rules are probably a good fit for folks who like that kind of thing.
did you like it more than rolling Eclipse Phase characters?
since oracle's taking a little while:

@trogdor The QSR for Mutant Epoch isn't nearly as comprehensive as Eclipse Phase's. It's more focused on abilities without tying them directly to details about your backstory.
EP gives you a character with a full and rich story long before you start playing.
@doppelgreener and so it begins
@BESW fair enough
EP is pretty great for that
Okay, new plan for Hatmas: famously awful fathers get to wear the Darth Vader mask.
3
01:03
oh ho ho
Help me think of famously awful fathers, please. Norman Osborn comes to mind first.
I thought I had this hat on the right person, but you gave me an idea
he isn't a famously awful father though,... he is just a fictional awful "father" who isn't necesarily famous
@BESW Marceline's Dad from Adventure Time.
Dr. Evil, Zeus, Leland Palmer, Peter Griffin, King Laius, Jack Torrance...
fair enough yeah
01:12
I think Robert Ford from Westworld counts.
oh jeez
yeah I would say so
you know, with that kind of classification mine works

I can't see your new avatar yet, though.
Kain, from Soul Reaver was a pretty awful father too
01:14
@BESW I have not even changed it yet
Hunson Abadeer, that's his name
@doppelgreener I dunno, looks like a cool guy to me
Trigon.
yeah, he is father of the year all right
@trogdor he has got a suit and a sassy pose
@BESW Apophis
01:16
@doppelgreener and a huge fire behind him which he gives no honey badgers about
Good point, we forget too often that Apophis was a Bad Dad.
yeah, I had certainly forgotten that, but it is true
Bill from Kill Bill.
Don Draper.
Shou Tucker from Fullmetal Alchemist
Thanos. Worst step-dad ever.
Okay, so who do I start with?
...probably Jack Torrance.
01:22
@doppelgreener ugh, I can't even look at him without cringing after seeing that episode
Batman. (not Bruce Wayne.) Sort of.
I don't know if I would classify him as on the same level as most of these other people
Yeah probably not haha
certainly not great at dad stuff, but still
Ra's al Ghul, however...
01:23
yeah, hmmhmm
Henry VIII (28 June 1491 – 28 January 1547) was King of England from 21 April 1509 until his death. He was the first ever English King of Ireland, and continued the nominal claim by English monarchs to the Kingdom of France. Henry was the second Tudor monarch, succeeding his father, Henry VII. Henry is known for his consequential role in the separation of the Church of England from the Roman Catholic Church, besides his six marriages and many extramarital affairs, as well as his effort to obtain an annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon, which led to conflict with the Pope. His di...
the Joker
he "adopted" one of the Robins, right ?
@trogdor I don't know about that bit but there's at least one storyline in which Harley gave birth to his kid — and she keeps knowledge of it from him
@doppelgreener he kidnapped on of the Robins, don't remember which one, and he basically acted like he had adopted him as a kid, put him in Joker makeup, and did something to his brain so he would eventually become the new Joker or some such
Wow, that's bad
01:33
it's a bit of a stretch, but some of these are like that, and he WAS playing the role of a father
oh, I think it was in Batman Beyond
Sort of like Thanos murdering Gamora's family and raising her to be a living weapon.
well,... except Joker did it partly because the kid was Robin at the time
whereas Thanos,... that is just what he does
they are both evil, horrible fathers, but one has more personal reasons, and the other has done this kind of thing on other planets before
Which is better?
I kinda like the top one
@BESW top one
bottom one definitely looks vadery though :)

...Waiting for my chat account to catch up...
02:09
Marty, Sour Cream's dad
Ooh, yes.
02:26
Horrifying realisation: I'm going to be 12 hours behind by the time I've even started working on hats.
Okay, I've got almost a dozen dads ready to go and another half-dozen ideas for dads.
Still need more, but that's a good buffer.
02:42
seems good enough for now
I'd like to do Father from Equilibrium, but it's almost impossible to obscure his face and still have any chance of recognising him.
Jerry Smith from Rick and Morty. Mostly incompetent and generally despised or looked down upon. Has in one universe held his own son hostage. Actually a decent dad in a small number of them.
Not so much a terrible dad as he is terrible, and a dad. (But he's also not very good at Dad stuff.)
I've been trying to come up with anything to top Shou Tucker, but I think it might actually be impossible.
Don't need to top 'em, variety is good.
Hmmm...Vicious Bigbeard Daggersharp?
Ah, but you need a picture of them, so nvm.
02:58
Google isn't sure who that is.
It's a pretty obscure book - Splashdance Silver. Worth a read if you ever run across it.
My current list:
> Anakin Skywalker (Star Wars)
Apophis (SG-1)
Bill (Kill Bill)
Don Draper (Mad Men)
Dr. Evil (Austin Powers)
Father (Equilibrium)
Henry VIII (British history)
Hunson Abadeer (Adventure Time)
Immortan Joe (Mad Max Fury Road)
Jack Torrance (The Shining)
? Jerry Smith (Rick and Morty)
King Arthur (the Matter of Britain)
King Claudius (Hamlet)
King Laius (Oedipus)
King Lear (King Lear)
Leland Palmer (Twin Peaks)
Marty (Steven Universe)
Norman Osborn (Spider-Man)
Peter Griffin (Family Guy)
Ra's al Ghul (DC Comics)
03:13
Tarquin from OotS should have been the first one I thought of.
oh
good one
Thanks!
@Miniman [takes many notes]
Oooh - Gin Freecs from Hunter x Hunter.
Hah, I now have a surplus of about 8 dads.
03:21
Nice.
Notable additions include Immortan Joe and Fire Lord Ozai.
Ahoy. How goes?
Hats!
hats are going pretty well
Ooooh, another one not for the list but I really want to say it:
Whichever Wizardry 8 party member fathered a child with Al-Sedexus.
03:34
....
but that could be any of them though
basically
Btw, who's Fire Lord Ozai?
Or, I guess, where's he from?
He's the leader of the Fire Nation in Avatar: The Last Airbender.
Zuko's dad.
Ah, right. Never got into that show.
Yeah, it starts off kinda rough and the first season is super episodic.
03:38
Hmmm, so it does actually get better? Fans of the series usually tell me "what are you talking about? It's awesome", which has never motivated me to make the effort.
Yeah, they've got nostalgia goggles on re: the first part of the series.
Just because it's better than a lot of what was available for that demographic at that time doesn't make it great. It's the slow story- and character-building that make it memorable, and that doesn't really come into its own until toward the end of the first season.
it was a really good series overall, I think, but I myself didn't see every episode
including the last one
Once they've laid the background and the characters, they can get into honestly challenging moral dilemmas with stakes we care about. But Nickelodeon's insistence on ridiculously long seasons (so they hit syndication minimums faster) means it takes forever to get there.
@trogdor Hmmm. I get the impression your tastes are pretty similar to mine, so I'll have to give it another go next time I'm looking for something to watch.
(Ironically, the sequel series Korra suffers from the opposite problem: its writers didn't adapt to the new short-form storytelling necessary for the truncated season lengths, so everything gets crammed up together in the last episodes.)
03:46
> a nice way to finish out another really amazing year
This year warrants hats?
A lot of things happened this year that amazed me!
I can't say I was happy about most of them, but they did amaze me.
@Miniman I would say the seasons after the first are definitely better
it isn't about years warranting hats, its about whether you NEED hats any given year
It's interesting how the first season of a show tends to be either head and shoulders above the rest, or vice versa.
and I feel like I need hats EVERY year
@Miniman You'll also find the animation quality goes up as the series goes on.
03:51
@Miniman that is an odd occurrence yeah, I figure that it's because some people run out of ideas after a while, and then others are still learning as they go what is going to work
@BESW I don't know if he is high caliber enough of a bad father, and as far as I remember his fatherhood was purely theoretical, but Dwight Shruut might qualify
this was a thing he said during a christmass episode of The Office
he was not as bad as most of these other guys, but still seemed to be fine with promoting scummery
The magnitude of awfulness is less important than that they're being awful to their kid(s).
@SevenSidedDie Do you think this is a common enough question to be worth a FAQ tag?
04:17
@BESW Maybe? I'm trying to think about how to get a sense of whether it's a FAQ, or just a potential FAQ. My current thought is that, if it sees a lot of linking main-site, that might indicate that it needs a tag.
Yeah, I'm unclear as well.
You may also want to edit or unfeature your Hatmas portent.
Maybe include a link to this year's album?
04:33
@BESW I keep expecting someone to post a nice “it has begun” answer, but I suppose that and the [featured] don't have any necessary relation. Yeah, I'll swap the featured tags. The Hatmas album will be a hint that it's started.
04:56
A couple of hats want activity on three sites. I don't know if I can take WB... I may have to find a new site. Like, so help me, Physics or Math =\
yeah, I can't do that
well, I can, but I won't
Actually, I don't really see any hats I'm keen on chasing. This year's experiment: participate as usual for twenty days and see what I get =)
I went to Meta to find a decent question to vote on, and after doing so saw at least one or two linked in here that I would have voted on anyway XD
@Miniman We have a copy. I've read it... but I don't remember much (anything?) about it...
@BESW Walter White? Archie Bunker?
05:07
Walter White certainly wasn't the best dad,... but I don't know that he was being specifically terrible to his kids,.. maybe at least his wife though
it's more a question of how much motivation matters
Bill Paxton in some movie raises his kids to be a pair of serial killers...
[rummages]
Frailty is a 2001 American psychological thriller film, directed by and starring Bill Paxton, and co-starring Matthew McConaughey. It marks Paxton's directorial debut. The plot focuses on the strange relationship between two young boys and their fanatically religious father, who believes that he has been commanded by God to kill demons disguised as people. == Plot == Fenton Meiks visits FBI Agent Wesley Doyle claiming that his brother Adam is the "God's Hand" serial killer Doyle has been hunting. Meiks says Adam has committed suicide, prompting Fenton to fulfill a promise to bury Adam in a public...
(Oh, P.S.: spoiler alert.)
(My avatar now represents Vader at the end of ROTJ)
@BESW John Hammond, father of many killer dinosaurs?
(And many cute ones.)
(And those sets might overlap.)
@BESW Oppenheimer? (Depending on how political you want to get....)
@nitsua60 His child was da bomb! (...too soon?)
@Adeptus It's comic fantasy, very reminiscent of early Pratchett (like, Colour of Magic early).
05:21
@trogdor I vaguely remember some pretty-big fights with Walter, Jr. at some point...?And there's the whole "we have to leave our house because there are killers coming" thing. And the whole "I'm going to live alone in a cabin in New Hampshire to keep you safe" thing.
true
@Adeptus Depends where you live, I suppose =|
I guess he does indeed qualify
@trogdor Does he threaten to kill Skyler at one point? (And is that how she spells her name?)
I think he threatened to see the kids again after she forbid him to
he "might" have also directly threatened her after she stopped putting up with him
I don't quite remember
05:25
@trogdor Showing up naked in the convenience store to cover his multi-day disappearing act...?
The parade of horribles just starts to blend at some point....
yeah
(I suppose it's not so much the showing up naked, it's the accepting everyone's sympathy.)
that last thing was before anyone knew what he was doing though
@nitsua60 I think Darth Baader should have a backstory, or at least a caption :P
@Miniman Hover...
05:26
Ah, right. Can't hover on mobile, but I'll check it out when I get home.
@nitsua60 ha, nice
@trogdor Seriously--I wasn't even planning on wearing it, but then the daisy lined up so nicely.
@nitsua60 hehe, I was wearing it because it made some sense with my avatar from before, but then @BESW mentioned his theme for this year, and I realized it fit this character really well
[adds Aaron Echolls to the list]

2 hours later…
07:34
@Emrakul Could I get you to pop open the Spoil-Lair, please?
Also, you know, hi.
user61230
How DARE.
user61230
Consider it done! Also hi!
What's new?
user61230
Not too much! Tihngs're pretty busy. I'm """on break""" from college, which nominally means I don't have """anything""" to do.
Thassalotta scare quotes.
user61230
07:43
Yeah. Honestly, things're good, though. How about you?
Kinda ragged.
Way behind in everything, coming apart at the seams. But my RPG group is coming back together a bit, so that's nice, and some of my friends are doing a Double Feature afternoon before our RPG night.
Depending on who shows up, we sometimes just keep watching films into the night. The goal is to watch films we wouldn't otherwise watch, with an emphasis on camp and low-budget gems or laughables.
user61230
That's good, then. I mean, not good feeling like life's unraveling a bit, but good to have friends there.
user61230
In-person RPG group?
we technically have half and half
Yeah. Doppelgreener and a few others try to Skype in when they can, but it's not been happening much lately.
07:49
though our in person people in general are there more
Last weekend we watched the 1966 "Batman" with Eartha Kitt as Catwoman, the Chuck Jones animated short "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi," the slapstick comedy satire "Death Becomes Her" (starring Bruce Willis, Meryl Streep, and Goldie Hawn), and the bizarre comedy(?) "Vamp" featuring Grace Jones as a wordless vampire from Ancient Egypt who runs (and performs in) a seedy strip club.
and we can't easily watch movies with people who are not in the same room
And as you saw over in the Spoil-Lair, I'm hoping to get an InSpectres one-shot in during the holidays.
Also I might finally get to play Dog Eat Dog with indigenous academics over the winter break.
user61230
Oh, sweet! So it sounds like a veritable party of players.
user61230
Complete with movie-watching.
user61230
07:56
And I actually haven't read in Spoil-Layer yet! I'm gonna poke my head in in a sec, though. What's Dog Eat Dog?
I've also recently marathoned Veronica Mars, which made me very eager to go back to Bubblegumshoe.
Dog Eat Dog is a brutal RPG about colonialism and assimilation.
user61230
...oh jeez. What's Veronica Mars?
user61230
I feel like I'm opening such a can of worms.
it's a show about a high school sleuth
not quite as brutal
Veronica Mars is a TV series about a teenage sleuth in a harshly class-segretated California town.
08:00
though the biggest mystery (so far for me) is a death so there is that
user61230
...huh. I take it it's good?
It's pretty clearly the primary inspiration of Bubblegumshoe, and yeah, it's quite good.
It's got the banter skills of Buffy with noir tones more like Brick.
(And the actors are just superb.)
@Emrakul Playing Dog Eat Dog led me to write Colonypunk, to explore a facet of assimilation that DED didn't focus on.
(DED is about how presumptions of superiority make every story about the superior person/group/culture whenever they show up; Colonypunk is about how effective resistance also impels assimilation.)
user61230
08:21
(One sec, sorry!)
No worries, I'm into the dinner back-and-forth myself.
@DoomedMind [wave]
@BESW [wave]
hi guys :)
08:42
Hey
user61230
09:24
Wow, I sure got pulled away.
user61230
@BESW That's a neat mini-system. Is it intended to be played Roll for Shoes-style, i.e. with no other rules, or is it a supplementary mechanic to some other system?
user61230
@BESW And this indeed sounds neat! Onto the list it goes.
user61230
(I swear, there are at least 20 items on my list that came from you.)
user61230
goodnight!
user61230
but for now, I really need sleep
09:34
@Emrakul That's it, it's a mini-game like Roll For Shoes.
There's a lot implied between the lines that's intended to come out in play, and the dialogue during play to figure out what's not stated is part of the point.
I have a fork for a hand now!
@Miniman I wasn't aware that thing had hands!
10:05
@doppelgreener I didn't! Why do you think I'm so happy about my fork prosthetic?
Hi folks!
Yawp.
Is it doctors time again, or is that some different category of people?

I'm looking for tropes for space western land racing. In particular if they fit the Firefly 'Verse very well, involve guns and explosions, or borderline legal activities.
Well, for the 'verse, just go look for Old West tropes and strap a beat-up jetpack on 'em.
Yep, I'm just not very well-versed in Old West tropes, either. Westerns involving horse racing for entertainment would be good pointers, too, for that reason.
It's not a genre I'm super familiar with either.

apparently there's a short Not A Documentary on WB2016 and it's nice.
Heheh.

nice idea so long as you have the models to stick 'em on
Their lowest "you get a thing" pledge is $20+shipping, and their product is treading ground that's been tread many times before with generally ambivalent results.
BTW, I'm brainstorming in the Spoil-Lair if anybody who's not a Geek Nighter would like to help me come up with an NPC's last name.
11:41
@doppelgreener The Dice Monthly KS is pretty dire, too.
@BESW oh yeah, it is. i'm less surprised by that though.
Yeah.
I'm glad Harlem Unbound got so much attention though.
Me too!
@BESW I suggest posting the maskless images too, to aid recognisability

@doppelgreener How's that?
@BESW Ha! Took me a minute. I like what you did there.

I think there's a campaign idea lurking in this comic strip.

If you're wondering why I added 1879 to the list, I have three words for you: British. Cavalry. Chicken.
> You're interested in our game line, or you wouldn't have read this far. Chances are, you've played the game at a convention, or a Friendly Local Game Store, or a demo at somebody's house. You might already have the 1879 Player's Guide. You want the 1879 Gamemaster's Guide. We can make that happen.

Yeah, I have the same problem.
But they had me at British Cavalry Chicken anyway.
However, their links help:

Victoria and Albert rule over a steam-powered British Empire that spans two worlds. Seems they got there first, three thousand years ago, and they’re not exactly the welcoming sort. The Saurid tribes, lizard-like folk who ride theropods and pteranodons, complicate matters further. @BESW I just now posted to them a question asking them to explain their world
@BESW that is helpful. thank you. :)
I just got Jayne's hat!!!! :D
12:54
@BESW My recommendation for Bad Dad's is Walter White/Heisenberg, from Breaking Bad.
That seems to be a contentious nomination.
@BESW How so?
While he's definitely not Dad of the Year, he's not actively awful to his kids.
It's an interested conversation, but I'm gonna focus on Dads who aren't debatably Bad.
Did you get Chronos? Ate all his kids. You tend to lose points for that. Was afraid they'd murder him and overthrow him, of course, but I think that was kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy once you start eating your kids that one of them would try to do that.
@BESW I suggest Titus Andronicus for Bad Dad.
13:02
@doppelgreener I was debating Chronos or Zeus.
@BESW Either is good, though Zeus is mostly a lousy husband with his running off and cavorting with so many mortals and nymphs. What's Hera, chopped liver? She's a goddess, fergoodnessakes!
@KorvinStarmast Then again he tends to be like "wow! that was great! ok BYE have fun with those freakish offspring"
Yeah, there is that
Zeus is basically the R18+ version of "a Wizard did it".

@BESW It just hit me that the Steven Universe episode Drop Beat Dad has wordplay for its title. Because it's Deadbeat Dad. But also, DJing.
Yup.
@doppelgreener Zeus is the deadbeat dad who sends expensive and completely inappropriate gifts instead of spending time with his kids.
13:09
@BESW Haha! What kind of stuff has that involved?
@doppelgreener ooooh
@doppelgreener Zeus gave the three-year-old Artemis a silver bow and arrows; all the mountains in the world; thirty cities; and eternal virginity.
Hm... it is about time I do a hat-oriented avatar change but I am not sure what to. Potentially a change to Jayne Cobb, now that I have his hat. There's 21 days of Winterbash to go... I could do a 21 Days of Jayne Cobb thing.
@BESW uh huh, dangerous and unnecessary; not all that useful; kinda overkill there; [sprays mouthful of tea]
what kind of GIFT IS THAT
The kind of gift that's a great example of why you don't let a three-year-old pick her own gifts.
13:28
and he went with it cause Zeus
Yeah. But it seems to have been his own idea to give Athena a breastplate made of the skin of the goat that he'd suckled from as a child.
well, it can all be explained by him being the crazy guy in charge
@BESW she'd?
@doppelgreener No.
no
it was his goat
13:32
oh, Zeus's goat?
you don't understand
he is Zeus
it was his goat
XD
look, if someone told me Zeus picked up every mountain looking for his toga, I would believe it
he was freaking insane
Not to change the topic or anything, but I just wrote this in chat with an old player from my D&D days, as he's speculating on various ridiculous character concepts that'd be more reasonable in more narrative systems:
> Bag of Lemmings. You start every scene with two free invokes on your bag of lemmings aspect.
(It's two instead of the usual one, because I want to encourage lemming use.)
a bag of lemmings?
13:35
Yes. This is Ritz.
You could have guessed that.
oh
ok,... you know what I said about Zeus? most of that also applies
except I wouldn't ever call Ritz crazy, because he is the best
XD
His other idea is an Ork Cannon.
fair enough
> Ork Cannon. Whenever you get 3 or more over or under the target number on an attack with your Ork Cannon, the Ork survives impact! Add the aspect Rampaging Ork on the scene. If you succeeded by 3+, you get a free invoke on it. If you failed by 3+, the GM gets the free invoke.
pretty sure that has been done before?
not the way that stunt works maybe, but the idea behind it
13:39
Probably.
He's also still attached to HASSAN.
@BESW Sorry to hear about the first part.
Blaaaaargh.
I mean, thanks.
14:06
> Goblin Cannon. They're hard to use, but when they work well, they work really, really well -- against something at least. When your roll has more pluses than minuses in it, choose something breakable in the scene -- it gets completely demolished to your benefit. When your roll has more minuses than pluses, something gets destroyed to your detriment. (Entirely beside what you were trying to accomplish.)
(Any place where a goblin cannon's being used is going to be far less intact afterwards.)
alternately: three or four pluses / three or four minuses
> Kender Cannon. You can increase your level of success by one (failure to tie, tie to success, success to success with style) by letting them steal something from you.
oh dear.
(also the goblin cannon in question doesn't necessarily fire goblins, but is of goblin make)
(i mean, it could fire goblins...)
> Laser whip. When you succeed with style on a physical attack, you also deal 1 mental stress to the defender.
