12:00 AM
If the PC is truly returned to full life, I'm not sure of any situation where the caster has control over them (unless there's a riding effect, like the Necromancer has the Necrotic Cyst spells and planted one in the PC at the same time).

@Ben Basically, if they're brought back alive, they'll probably be in control. If they're brought back undead, the necromancer will probably be in control. There are exceptions to both.

Ben
@Miniman Ok, that's cool. It was more a curiosity thing, I have no immediate intentions of coming across this kind of situation haha

If the PC is some sort of undead, then it's very likely the PC is under the Necromancer's control--but not guaranteed. And the Necromancer probably has abilities to gain control over undead, too, so the raising spell isn't the only tool they have for that.
Actually, now I've got an idea for a healing cleric who goes bad and starts planting controlling infections in the corpses he resurrects.

Note to self: adventure one-shot with plot twist where the party has been undead and under the party necromancer's control for days.

I wasn't going to share this, but it seems suddenly relephant.
Huge, if true. http://t.co/qAWSvUqi0Y

12:03 AM
@doppelgreener That's not technically correct, it's under the next major heading, I just misread the headers.

fixed.

@BESW That took me a minute. XD

> The Body Electric. You can make attacks with Shoot even when unarmed, and use Shoot to create advantages relating to electricity.

Ben
@doppelgreener "...would you kindly"

12:10 AM
@mxyzplk Mm, I was thinking the organisation structure that d20pfsrd had chosen seemed to change the meaning of where that paragraph on moving quickly to hide applied. I'll trust you on this though.

no jsut the subheaders have blue bars and the larger headers are just a large font so it's visually deceptive

@mxyzplk Sheesh, that is deceptive actually.
> I've got the guns right here. You can make attacks with Shoot when unarmed. Doing so counts as a mental attack. Also, you can use Physique in place of Rapport to Create Advantage or Overcome.

> I cannot breathe in your atmosphere. You are immune to airborne effects, but you are weak against attacks targeting your helmet.

> The Air makes me stronger! While in Oxygen-Rich environments, you gain a +2 advantage on Fight and Physique rolls, though any visual or audible attack against you is made with the same advantage.

> Exterminate Annihilate Destroy. Your Shoot attacks have weapon:4 against humans who are actively disobeying you.
(I'm still on a "song title stunts" kick.)

12:16 AM
I'm enjoying it :)

You told the drunks I knew karate. Spend a Fate point to use Deceive in place of any one skill you don't have, until the end of the scene or until you fail by 3 or more.

> The Used Car Salesman You can use Deceive instead of Rapport whenever you're talking about something you don't actually know.

Hide and Seek. You get +2 to Notice a hidden target, so long as you are also hidden from them.
> The device has been modified. Any time you would get a free invoke on a mechanical aspect, you can instead add a boost to that mechanism.
> What child is this? You get +2 when using Contacts to identify people.
(Trogdor already knows all these songs because they're regulars on my default playlist.)

12:40 AM
I just wish I could listen to music at the moment lol

1:00 AM
> State run radio. You get +2 when using Contacts to communicate or receive secret messages over public broadcasts.
> Electric lady. You can use Rapport to make electricity attacks and create electricity-related advantages.

1:26 AM
These aren't the droids you're looking for. You get +2 to Notice Droids if they are in fact the ones you're looking for.

@Sandwich Too situational, I think? :P I could be wrong though.

Aren't you a little short for a Stormtrooper? You get +2 to Notice discrepancies in disguises based on a unifrom.

Depends on whether or not you're looking for droids

> I'm fluent in over six million forms of communication. You gain a +2 advantage when using Deceive while translating a conversation.

@doppelgreener We've actually been carting around a tied up Death Knight (who had attacked us, summoning demons and all, trying to drag our Abyssal back into forced Evil Bad Guy service) for in-game days now trying to figure out what to do with him. Just have him riding around on our Simhata.

1:41 AM
Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy You get +2 to avoid Attack actions when being shot at.

@Pixie You haven't tried offering him baked goods, have you?

@BESW Heh, my Exalted character actually has something like this, except she can use any type of nonverbal communication to make complex ideas understood as if she had spoken them. She's a dancer, but it also comes in handy when she's in an animal form.

@Sandwich -- :P imperial stormtroopers vs. elves

I'd give it to the elves

@Sandwich Are you looking for this verbage?: "You get +2 to Defend against Shoot." ("+2 to avoid Attack actions" doesn't make much sense.)

1:43 AM
Yes thats what I was trying to say

especially when they start figuring out how to work whatever weapons they purloin from the Imperial Stormtroopers :P

I don't know much Fate

@doppelgreener Alas, no baked goods to hand. We're past the point of negotiation, though. He is a big meanie.

@Sandwich Well. Stunts should describe your own character, and justify why they have that stunt. Imperial stormtrooper marksmanship academy doesn't say much about why you could dodge vs shoot, sounds like that's making fun of your enemies, but sometimes they will be bounty hunters.

I see.
Maybe +2 to avoid attacks from stormtroopers

1:56 AM
Aspects in Fate Core also start with "Because I am (one of your character's aspects), ..." to justify how and why you can do that thing. In Atomic Robo that part gets skipped, or is shared as part of the name, but it's still useful to think of how/why.

One of the players in my PF group is annoyed by some historically/culturally inaccurate stuff in the armor, but every time they complain, they then immediately placate themselves by thinking of their character's horse, which they have named Mole. xD
Pathfinder's weaknesses: accurate arms and armor. Pathfinder's strengths: horse.

Horse's are so... Horsey :P

Haha
Pathfinder has horses
10/10 RPG

The horses are the real stars.
Always.
From my last game:
> GM: Walking's an option. A slower option, granted. I just wanted to re-solidify the storied horse canon.
Player: o thank goodness
Me: (the horses are important background characters who will eventually get a spinoff series)

God
Rick and Morty is such a good show

1 hour later…
3:24 AM
@Sandwich Yes it is. :D

3:40 AM
Microverse
..Where do they come up with this stuff
Mr.Meeseeks
Is the best character

Mostly in ad-libbing, I hear.

I'm Mr. Meeseeks, HELLO LOOK AT ME

@Pixie Kitty!

@BESW something is wrong with that last guy's eyes

He sprained his eye sockets when he rolled his eyes too hard.

3:50 AM
That's just the way he's drawn
Tagon is cool though
Haven't seen much of him lately

@Sandwich Well. Yes. And the way he's drawn has something wrong with his eyes.

He used to look like this.

Schlock is the best character though
Schlock and Kevyn

@BESW That is an improvement. His eyes have received a downgrade. I blame the guy in the sunglasses, who probably stole his eyes for science and replaced them with worse ones he had lying around.

This is likely.

3:56 AM
I believe it also has happened at least once, canonically.

They've all been killed and re-grown from clones multiple times.
And that's before the mad science.

Yeah I've read it all
Over the course of two days
Now its become part of my weekly comic rotation

4:09 AM
There is a remote chance I will do something similar.

@zespri [wave]

@BESW ;)

What's new?

I keep returning here don't I? I don't play RPGs, but find the site fascinating =)))
What RPG system do you think would make a good computer game? Aside from D&D?

@zespri [been here for several hundred consecutive days] Yeah it's pretty great I guess.
@zespri Um. I'm not sure. The best RPG systems are usually riffing off the fact there's people exclusively in charge.

4:17 AM
@zespri Shadowrun has a few games kicking around, some widely considered good, some not.

One reason D&D is so commonly used as inspiration for CRPGs is that it often tries to act like the GM is merely an agent of the system rather than treating the system as a tool for the group to use.

@zespri -- I'd say D&D doesn't make a particularly good computer game, and I'm playing NWN as we speak.

I think that's the quality you'd want to look for in TRPG systems, if you want to find ones that are best suited for translation to CRPGs.
The RPGs I play are notable for moving in the exact opposite direction, so I can't really suggest any.

@BESW -- I agree, at least for large-scale CRPG play, where the system must do most of the legwork.

@Miniman Shadowrun's video games run off its setting more than the RPG mechanics though, AFAIK.

4:19 AM
@doppelgreener -- that they do, as I understand it

@Shalvenay Direct message replies please?
Do you understand how to do them?

@doppelgreener it's rather awkward to do them from the UI

You're joining in on an existing conversation giving responses to a bunch of points. Please, please for clarity - please - use them.

you can't just type them in

You do this a lot, and it's confusing every time.
Yes. So please click on the things.

4:21 AM
@doppelgreener Tbh, I haven't played any of them :) I've just heard a lot about them.

@Miniman I'm mostly exposed to the old SNES ones.
(@Shalvenay Well, not confusing every time, but most times, if you were replying directly to comments at times like this things would be immediately loads clearer.)

@doppelgreener should I make a meta thread about this deficiency in chat? because it's a choice between typing at conversation-speed and having to look up and figure out which message to reply to, then reply to it

@Shalv Chat hasn't seen an update in years, so it won't do much yet. But yeah, you should be looking at which message to reply to, and using the tools to indicate to people seeing your messages what you're replying to.

@doppelgreener so it'll wind up in the soon(tm) bin? (also, it doesn't help that I'm far more used to IRC than anything else)

Yes. (Also you don't have to respond to messages directly every time, like how I'm not doing it now, but if you're joining in on a conversation and leaving comments on multiple different things.... it helps. A lot.)

4:23 AM
@Shalvenay It's also worth pointing out that we see a lot of people in this chat, and as as I can recall you're the only one who habitually replies to messages without using the reply functionality. It's really not that much of an inconvenience.

@Miniman this is also the only SE chat I get badgered about this in :P which is funny, considering I'm in a bunch

@Shalv If you're replying right after a comment you don't exactly need to use the direct comment reply. It's clear enough. It's less clear when it's been stretching on for a bit. I probably overreacted this time. But it's a thing you've done a lot in the past.
If other people don't badger you about it, that doesn't mean there isn't an issue there.

@doppelgreener I suspect that this is the busiest though

I have to admit, I'm guilty of just tagging instead of replying from time to time... It doesn't take much longer to click the reply arrow though :)

@Shalvenay Yup, if there's only a couple people, or the conversation has a lot of pauses, or there's only one narrow topic, general replies are less confusing.

4:27 AM
@BESW it also doesn't help that whichever arcanist designed chat.SE decided to make it inviso-by-default
which explains why I wouldn't have known about it inititally

so much hoops, even for just 3.5, 5e is harder

@Storyteller oh, getting published?

I'll reiterate it is ok to just go @ping and even without a ping if it's obvious, but suddenly jumping into a conversation, it usually isn't.
... I'm going to go focus on something else.

still not sure I understand the d20/ogl relationship
'publishing'

@Shalvenay I didn't realise it was there till I saw other people doing it and wanted to know why lol.

4:29 AM
@Storyteller Hmm. I don't think the site has that particular question yet. You should ask it!

@Nyoze I didn't really notice it until people started badgering me about it, really. it's not at all obvious how the threading works in this chat, especially if you come from IRC-ville where such things are nonexistent

like, near as I can tell, ogl/srd, you can use mostly freely, and you accept and put your work (or portions of it) under ogl, by using ogl content, such as the srd. and you cannot use any reference to 'dnd' or d20 or any of their protected identity

...as a random sidenote, ever since:

Q: What happens when Wild Shape/Polymorph runs out in a space that's too small?

rogue_expatSo in a 5e campaign I'm running, the party Druid has recently been doing some scouting of the local monster caves in spider form to avoid notice. I've also described how the goblins and kobolds who live in these caves use a variety of tunnels too small for Medium sized creatures in order to get a...

got asked, I've wanted to do a quest where someone gets accidentally FedEx'ed a druid with their Mother's Day flowers

My current group bought a donkey which turned out to be a Wild Shaped Druid.
6

4:32 AM
and d20, means you use some ogl, if you want, but you must use certain wording legally, and can reference certain specific protected identity content and you have to use '5%' ogl and then you can put the d20 logo on, a bunch of copyright notices and this is the break down, you dont need permission or to pay royalties

(Well, technically we traded him for an elephant. Long story.)

idk, Im reading the d20 guide

@Miniman LOLOLOLOLOL that is too funny -- good way to introduce a druid to the party, though, I suppose?

@Miniman ... this would be a great con.

so, you can make dnd content, that is compatible with 3.5e, and it can reference the players handbook, and the dmg (but only by abbreviation) and use mechanics, except character creation and applying experience....
'i think'

4:34 AM
@Shalvenay Yeah, we had a late addition to the group, and our GM was like "Hmmm..."

@Pixie oh, it would be a beautiful con...

Get yourself a partner and have them sell your wildshaped form, only to escape at the earliest convenience and move on to the next sucker, over and over...

Mind you, this is the same guy who had me polymorphed into a pig, which one of my party members won in a drinking contest and then attempted to eat.

@Miniman bad idea -- that sounds like a recipe for being pig food.

@Shalvenay Nah, wizard polymorphed into a pig is absolutely 0 threat to the party barbarian. The only reason he wasn't successful in eating me was because he was super drunk, so I managed to escape.

4:37 AM
@Miniman heh, well...if it was the party barbarian, then he deserves to have a greased pig slip outta his hands for that one

what gets me, is the amount of '5e' stuff out there, that is going along as if 5e was governed by the ogl, or even the d20 licenses

@Storyteller Yeah, Wizards let a cat out of the bag with the OGL and established a cultural assumption about community ownership of D&D that they've been trying to walk back ever since.

i mean, stuff I just read today, and Im here calling wizards on the phone and asking permission before I make a blog post

@BESW yeah -- it's just a weird situation all around

and guys are 'compatible with 5e' and using str con dex etc, and 5e combat terms (weakness, abilities etc, the 5e combat information box) and its like... why am I following the rules? that guy isnt, he is at least making a few bucks
i guess because Im gulp lawful
anyway, its a dystopian rabbit hole. Im enjoying making sense of it.

4:41 AM
"Dystopian Rabbit Hole" would be a great name for a band.

I can only hope that by following rules, being professional and developing a product of quality, that I set myself apart
@BESW or adult film

@Storyteller IMO -- the whole copyright system has fallen off the rails into a dystopian rabbit hole. considering that its genesis lies in "promoting the progress of science and the useful arts" -- any change to copyright that detracts from that should get tossed out on its ear, but nooooo...

@Storyteller I'm pretty sure that'd just be a re-release of The Raspberry Reich.

@BESW Or an alternative name for a certain classic story...

well, its not just copyright, its the entire copyright/trademark/patent system

4:44 AM
@Storyteller agreed for the most part, trademarks haven't been as big a problem as copyright and patent, though. it's still a mess all around.

all of them are involved in simply writing a dnd module, for a 15 year old version of a product thats changed hands several times
well, d20 is a trademark
thats where the fun stuff lies in
using terms like 'reflex save', that d20, not ogl/srd

@Storyteller where'd the patent come from?

you 'can' patent rule mechanics
nne of it is, but it could be
you could patent roll 4d6 drop lowest

@Storyteller I suspect that patent would be thrown out on its ear in the context of Alice v. CLS Bank and Bilski v. Kappos

or a whole bunch of other stuf... no one is and Im thnkful, software patents are a nightmare

4:47 AM
@Storyteller ya. I'm very very glad that we started walking back from the cliff o' doom re: patents on software

id need the journal entry for thosecases to say one way or the other
well, today was interesting. even a simple ogl/3.5 adventure has to be written carefully, mostly because if I do it well and follow the rules well, it goes a long way to working something out to wirk with 5e
WotC/Hasbro will eventually get some 3rd party products that are licensed/official. its a matter f time. Id like to be one of them
tomorrow, maps, general description, adventure event list, more legal reading

@Storyteller What kind of product are you looking to write? Adventures, or supplemental material? (Classes, races, archetypes, spells, monsters and so on.)

atm, a simple oneshot adventure
beyond that, some locations, a few side quests, a 4 part ongoing campaign and a 2 part set of sidequests
'drop in' stuff, not tied to a specific setting, like one is 4 castles of various size and difficulty
I have plans for 1 and maybe another full campaign settings.. a country with culture, special materials, favored races, classes, social structure etc
...why do people say d20 trademark license is dead?

"Dead' in what sense?
Because, in the sense that we're in a post-d20-bust reality, that makes sense.
39
Q: What is "the d20 bust," and what does "post-d20 game" mean?

BESWReading this gaming industry retrospective I ran into a few phrases which confused me. The d20 bust caused by 3.5e (2003) and the over-saturation of d20 products ran right into the Great Recession. What's "the d20 bust"? I came into RPGs shortly after 3.5's release, so I can't compare befor...

yeah, that says that you cannot get a d20 trademark license
that it was discontinued
but.. I downloaded the agreement today
and its been 'revised', its safer to say, they didnt use it for further products, but it still exists and what Im reading says you can use it... if you comply
its like, d20(the system and the trademark license) is still there, but wotc just stopped using it for 4e/5e... but Im not seeing anything that says you cant
in fact, the bottom of the text reads:
You don't have to ask anyone for permission.

You don't have to submit any content for approval.

You don't have to pay anyone a royalty

5:19 AM
well, Im off, gnight

@Storyteller This is a good question for the main site. I think there's a good bit of research to be done on it.

yeah, I think I will set one up tomorrow, but a near as I can tell, you can still make d20 games and products

Ben
YAY. SUMMER IS HERE.
I know it says "Spring" on the Calendar, but in Australia, we only have two seasons: cold and dry, or hot and wet.

That...really depends where you are in Australia.

Cold and wet* here in tassie :(

5:33 AM
Whereas Guam has "hot and wet," "hot and windy," "hot and dry," and "HANG ON!"

Heh, where my Grandpa lives has 2 seasons: Hot and wet, and slightly less hot but still hot and just as wet.

Brisbane's seasons are... hot but not yet humid, hot and very very humid, hot and enormous storm season, hot and not so many storms anymore, reasonable temperatures in which we aren't sweating constantly for a few months, then about a month-ish of it actually dipping below 20 degrees and all of us freezing.

@doppelgreener When does the below 20 happen? I've been in Brisbane in the middle of winter and it was still pleasantly warm.

Ben
I'm in north qld

@doppelgreener Wow... I die if the thermometer goes above 18 degrees here lol.

5:41 AM
@Miniman Very dead of winter. Sometimes for about two weeks, and not if you're in a hot area. If you're in Brisbane city it'll also get very windy.

@doppelgreener I was in the city, and it was indeed windy.

Ben
@doppelgreener Wait, you only got down to 18? Whaaaat?

@Miniman There's a street here called George Street that runs between Roma Street bus station and the Botanical Gardens / Queensland University of Technology, and it turns into a wind tunnel on a windy day.

Ben
We were suffering in sub-zero temperatures up north! It got down to like 12!

@Nyoze Brisbane summers can hover at 25 degrees and get very uncomfortable from sheer humidity. And then they'll peak toward 30-ish degrees, and we'll get heat waves in which it goes up to 35 or 40 degrees (the latter's rare). All of this at 100% humidity. And then Melbourne's average mid-summer day hits 40 or more degrees at dry heat and it's brilliantly pleasant to stroll around in.

5:43 AM
@Ben Do you mean -12? Only you said sub-zero, so...

Melbournians can complain about their dry 40 degree summers but they know not what suffering is.

Ben
@Miniman Sub zero in North Queensland haha, so that's anything below 15 :P

Yeah... I've been in Melbourne in the dead of summer, and it's not fun... Neither is Brisbane though :P

@Ben We get way below 18. Just doesn't tend to happen, with exceptions, being: winter nights, and a small number of mid-winter days.

Ben
6:09 AM
@Miniman I had a similar situation once actually, our group borrowed some horses to travel to the next town, on orders from the town's guard, and when we got back to our horses after doing our thing, my horse was missing. Turns out it was the Druid scout we had befriended a few sessions beforehand and was sent to keep an eye on us.

@Ben I think the moral of the story is "Kill and eat every animal you come across, you can never be sure what it really is."

so, more research... seems there was an informal interview, and a WotC employee said 'd20STL will be terminated', but no has ever gotten a termination notice and the material is still available
this is quite fascinating, some people are taking this as gospel and crying d20 is dead, but people are still make 3.5 products
with ogl/srd, there is still plenty of material to work with to make an adventure module you could play... might need to be careful in a few passages, but for any experienced player thats not a problem
that said, what d20stl really offers, is about two dozen terms and phrases that make writing content far easier, the ability to reference DnD core books and the ability to say 'compatible with DnD' on them
now what gets me, is with no actual GSL for 5e available, people are advertising kickstarter campaigns openly on the wizards forum
this... is fascinating
anyway, more focus on content.. obviously people are making game books, for everything from 3/3.5 to 5e and many other systems
i am sure I can edit later to suit what is needed after I get the content 'done'

A'ight, I'm out. Laters :)

6:26 AM
@Nyoze Bye!
@Miniman ... Forcibly shapechange an illithid or intellect devourer into a donkey. Sell it to unwitting valuable targets as a pack animal. Wait until they fall asleep and let the spell end.
Also gives a new approach to the trojan horse.

@doppelgreener Yikes.

@Miniman Do you want parasites? Because that's how you get parasites.

> Body Thief. The intellect devourer initiates an Intelligence contest with an incapacitated humanoid within 5 feet of it. If it wins the contest, (see the movie The Thing for inspiration minus shapeshifting).
Is someone who's asleep incapacitated?

Consensus is yes.

Basic rules agree.
Wow.
This strategy is more brutal than I dreamed.

6:33 AM
@doppelgreener I thought there was a more specific question about it somewhere, but I went through it here.

So if that applies, then... sell them some shapeshifted intellect devourers, unshift them when everyone's asleep, and game over.

It's the new RFED! "Intellect Devourers unmorph, everyone's enslaved."

Morning

@doppelgreener Weeeell, the Wizard might win his contest. Of course, then he has to fight his entire party, plus a number of Intellect Devourers equal to his party size. Alternatively, he could just run.

@Miniman Also an illithid. This plan still involves at least one illithid.

6:39 AM
"At Least One Illithid" is a good name for a power metal album.
...or the slogan for an evil adventurer syndicate.

more than one Illithid is a problem for anyone who isn't an Illithid
3
one is too, but one is more manageable than multiple at least
though I suppose they don't always work together well

@trogdor And that is the kind of witty aphorism Benjamin Franklin would've put in Poor Richard's Almanac if he'd lived in a D&D setting.

Thinking about it, odds are good the Wizard's party members were all being controlled by Intellect Devourers anyway.

@BESW lol

So, what happens if an Intellect Devourer attempts to consume the brain of another Intellect Devourer's host?

6:42 AM
he probably would have XD

@BESW He goes blind?

@BESW they can't tell said mind is occupado?

@trogdor I have no idea.

mm

[investigates]
Hmm. They can detect the presence of Int scores 3 or higher. Which includes IDs.
Devour Intellect specifies the target must have a brain.
Body Thief assumes the target has a brain.

6:46 AM
They probably end up eating the other ID given they appear to be basically brains with limbs, and then write a bad review on Yelp about the experience via their newly occupied body.

"1/5, would not devour again"?

lol
wait,... so would they actually eat each other? XD

Possibly!
Unless they have something that says "oh wait! there's already one in here."

> The intellect devourer initiates an Intelligence contest with an incapacitated humanoid within 5 feet of it. If it wins the contest, the intellect devourer magically consumes the target’s brain, teleports into the target’s skull, and takes control of the target’s body.

It'd be advantageous for them to have something like that, but given we have the Flump I'm pretty sure evolution is not a factor in how D&D monsters come to be.

6:51 AM
Hmm.
IDs are bred by illithids, not naturally evolved.

yeah
someone mentioned that Illithids breed them
I think it was Magician

IDs are brains, or at least were.

sry, offtopic
http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/145637/Ghost-of-the-Frost-Giant-King?filters=0_2110_44833_0_45208
thing says d20 on the cover, 3.5 rules, in the dnd section, added this year

I don't think DriveThruRPG takes any responsibility for the content it hosts.

i just dont get it... i dont think drivethrurpg.com would be selling products, and listing them this way

6:56 AM
(Especially given the recent... drama...)

what recent drama?>

@BESW Ok, there we go. IDs probably would eat each other if they didn't recognise there was an ID in there.
Hopefully they have an illithid devourer detector.

the big todo about d20stl was that within 6 months (in 2008) that electronic media was to be taken down... Id think dtrpg would at least filter things out so they werent complying with dmca
or whatever it would be
its just, odd, to see things said one way, but people acting another
the only thing I have found, in regards to 'terminating' the d20stl, is an obscure quote from an interview stating future plans. its like he said it, they were planning to terminate, but they never did. they replaced it with new GSL for 4e, but even that does not include language like 'this supersedes the d20stl (or anything ese)
the language seems to imply d20stl cant actually be terminated, and they just hoped it would go away

@Storyteller I guess this is as good a link as any. Warning for glorification of sexual violence, and general ensuing idiocy.
They give the impression of being a "we aren't responsible for what's on our site" sort of company.

wow
wtf is this

7:12 AM
k
im so tempted to just write my own stuff outright
instantly avoids all this legal muckery

This looks helpful, but poorly cited.

@BESW This is terrible.

Mm. At this point, it's down.

The book's been pulled from their site?

Yeah.

7:25 AM
Good.

Doesn't seem like anybody learnt anything though.

Unlikely that they have.

Well, no, but if there's someone in the DriveThruRPG legal or marketing team giving them a steely death glare along with a message of "never host something like this again", then that is great.
Organisations work as such to help cancel out individual sources of stupid. Ideally.
(Among other reasons.)

Given that they managed to get into a Twitter fight about it, their PR department appears to be about as effective as a very small marmoset in a brightly lit room.

And yet the product's been pulled, so something has happened. And hopefully it's not a decision of "we'll pull this until people shut up, and then put it back and start selling whatever we want again."
Hopefully it's a decision of that going down and staying down.

7:31 AM
@doppelgreener nice and pretty probable option.

@Storyteller Consider that even if WotC doesn't want anyone to produce stuff for their game, even if doing might not actually be at all legal, if WotC ever sends out a cease & desist or lawsuit notice over someone publishing a D&D 3.5e book, they will probably also intimidate an entire industry out of ever engaging with their products as third party publishers again.
So even supposing it's not legal to publish d20 system material, it's probably marketing suicide to take the necessary legal action to make them stop.
.... except in softer cases, maybe, unless there's already precedent for this thing happening a lot.

i read that

Oh, that's already mentioned in there?

this section: d20 STL Revocation
In June 2008, Wizards ceased allowing publishers to use the d20 System Trademark License
thats second hand
there i a lot of stuff that says that, but not an official statement from Wizards/hasbro

okay, i'm confused. were you responding to me just then with "i read that" or just generally saying you'd read the thing BESW linked?

7:40 AM
there was a statement made in an interview 'the d20STL will be terminated'

i wasn't talking about its termination?

im going to call/submit a request tomorrow to wizards and see if I can figure this out.
some say the GSL superseded it, but t references 4e over and over again, never actually overwrites STL and otherwise, exists as a separate legal entry

i was talking about why someone might be able to publish something for the d20 system even if it was terminated.

at least in my lay-person's understanding

@Storyteller the GSL "superseded" the OGL in that Wizards stopped using the OGL and created the GSL to use that instead.
GSL doesn't get to overwrite the OGL or STL. Licenses don't work that way.

7:43 AM
Terminating the STL would be a separate action that Wizards intended to take in tandem with the introduction of the GSL.

@Storyteller Oh, right... I forgot Hasbro was into that. Well, no worry then, they never seem to think about the consequence of their C&D :P
