12:51 AM
@doppelgreener, @Adeptus FAE online playtest game availability form, courtesy Aslan.

Hail unto thee, @BESW

Bird I never wert.

@BESW I submit that thou wert, in fact, a bird.

I swear, officer, I never werted that bird in my life!

@BESW What timezones are they?

12:59 AM
@Adeptus Labelled EST and ChST, so that's Eastern Standard Time (American East Coast) and Chamorro Standard Time (equivalent to Brisbane).

OK

You can add your own time zone to this to do figuring.

1:14 AM
Looking at that, I might have to miss out... I have only a few windows of "maybe" time that line up with most other people's "maybe" time.

user61230
I think it's worth just blacking out the time zones @BESW isn't available in, since it'd be kinda hard for us to deal with it without a GM.

Woo, I got a silver badge! (Outspoken, for starred chat comments)

Grats!

@Adeptus conga rats!

Roleplaying with someone who won't provide a description of their character.

1:21 AM
@Metool This is how Loud Bear became an actual bear.

that's fantastic, was that a KS reward?
lol oops, obviously not 05...

@BESW And it works really well in that framework, I bet!

1:59 AM
I tend to pepper in descriptive things as I go in terms of Roleplay.
Unless I'm doing a character sheet, then the description happens all at once.

2:18 AM
I feel like I'm in a weird episode of Mathnet and I have to figure out the mathematical pattern:

lol, is that your timeslots?
cuz I'm pretty sure if you dropped a dodecahedron in there it'd line up the serial numbers...or something
(mushing the two mathnet eps that I can recall)

Do-deca-what?

d12

:)

2:29 AM
I'm always surprised to find someone who remembers SQ1TV at all.

@BESW very much loved that show and am sad that it is no longer on the air

@waxeagle More and more of it is on YouTube.

"Having to become a lich may complicate my sex life."
3

@BESW I just noticed that it looks like most if not all of mathnet is there. Will have to watch

@waxeagle "The Case of the Mystery Weekend" has got to be one of my all-time favourites.

2:35 AM
I remember it vaguely, but not well enough to remember any relevant plot bits

Q: What are some of the best interactive video based games?

user15978Like dungeons and dragons I think was one early one.

@BESW Added my part. I may not actually attend the online sessions, especially not if it'll complicate the schedule - I'm content with just our geek night sessions.

Yeah, I'll make the schedule based on Aslan and Emrakul, and anyone else will have to fit in around that.

2:53 AM
I don't entirely understand the Schedule.

@Lord_Gareth Simplify. You mean simplify.

http://rpg.stackexchange.com/questions/tagged/nwod-universe

I want it gone
I have a difference on opinion to xenoterracide that there is much cross-over that we should care about between WoD Editions.
xenoterracide has been asking alot of WoD area questions recently.
I have been answering alot of WoD area questions recently

3:09 AM
Chat can't really help with that; have you brought it to meta?

I just did
I need to establish a model of the world.
I may need to train a AI to know the current state of the tags being used.
2
Q: tagging mess that is "World of Darkness"

xenoterracideI find the current tagging for world of darkness to be quite confusing. world-of-darkness what's the purpose of this? it seems to refer to what is now canonically known as "classic world of darkness" not what is officially referred to as "world of darkness" also known as "new world of darkness" b...

I wanna Train an AI to go through my emails and systematically tell all the Princes of Nigeria to fuckin' bite me.

@Tarmikos11 Kinky

Right?

@Oxinabox I really really want to make a suggestion here or better understand it so I can contribute to the existing suggestions, but I have no idea about the structure of the WoD books. Which I understand themselves are an organisational mess.

Q: How to speed up 4e combat

Etienne van DeldenI DM a group of four PC's and even "easy" battles take at least an hour to resolve. Normal encounters take even longer! I want to speed up combat so my players can do more in a session. I've been trying a lot to speed up combat, we are already using: Initiative cards that the players keep up 3...

Close votes please! I'm voting to put this on hold as unclear. We need more info, because something absurd is happening at this table. I left comments:
What is causing your combats to go for 25-30 rounds!? Are you sure you understand the rules correctly? You said you completely removed healing surges altogether; are you aware almost no monsters have them and players can only use one second wind per encounter? What on earth is going on? How does your typical encounter play out? What are the monsters the players are fighting? What are the players doing the whole time? What are the monsters doing? — doppelgreener 5 mins ago
Voting to put this on hold as unclear - the major issue here is that you have so many rounds, and suggestions can only place band-aids over the issue that you are somehow having that many rounds. If you really want to solve this, you need to explain to us what's going on such that you can reach that many rounds - and we can tell you what your group's doing wrong. Something absurd seems to be going on at your table. — doppelgreener 1 min ago

3:32 AM
I know very little of 4e, but if someone told me they'd managed a 30 round combat in 3.5 or 5 I'd assume we were talking about an epic clash of mighty armies, LotR style.

@Miniman yeah, truly
@BESW Did even your epic boss fight encounters manage to go for that long? I'd appreciate you chiming in, since you went the full 1-20-something spectrum

Yeeeah, that's ridiculous.

Even allowing for monsters that can last that many rounds, there's no way you could get PCs through a 30-round combat without fatalities.

I mean, if all the PCs and NPCs are defenders and soldiers respectively, then maaaaybe if they aren't using post-MM3 stat blocks...

@BESW I would value you leaving a comment to the effect of your general experience re: the number of rounds in combat, in the usual cases or even at the limits. I would, but I only experienced early levels. A comment like "My own combats are usually over at round 5, even the boss fights don't pass round 20." or something would go a long way to helping this person realise that something crazy is happening.

3:36 AM
I never paid a lot of attention to round numbers, unfortunately.
Your comments are sufficient, I think.

@BESW I suspect that they may also be following bad DMG advice and creating difficulty by using monsters above the party level who do not hit hard. They will almost never get hit, and they will reliably just take ages to whittle down the PCs.

Is that rounds or turns? that's a lot of rounds. Most combats go 5-6 with mid level optimized characters. You should stop by chat and we can talk about this — wax eagle Jul 10 at 13:42

@BESW noooooooooooooooo!!!! They didn't leave a chat record link!
(if they even chatted)

@doppelgreener They didn't.

@Miniman Ok that's not so bad. (Still not good since we have no idea what's going on! But not so bad as it happening and us having no idea.)

3:43 AM
@doppelgreener "So manage your expectations here, you're probably about where most groups are." is a bit worrying. Looking through answers and comments on that question, most people seem to think that rounds should take way longer but there should be less of them?
Oddly enough, most of the answers seem to be making suggestions about making rounds take less time...

@Miniman Yes. I once had a boss fight that had seven enemies, and took 1-2 hours, but there was still a single-digit number of rounds.

@doppelgreener This.

I'm gonna leave that as a comment actually.
For comparison: I once ran a boss fight for my group that had seven enemies, and it took 1-2 hours in total. But it was still only a single-digit number of rounds. Individual turns and rounds can take a long time, but they shouldn't be taking many rounds at all! — doppelgreener 19 secs ago
(should I mention anything extra in there or modify it, whilst I'm in the edit period?)

@doppelgreener Seven-enemy boss fight? Were they an evil party, or Armos Knights, or what?

4:00 AM
@Miniman 2 (3?) earth elementals with some earth elemental attack wolves.
I must be off. Tally ho!

@doppelgreener What'd you just call me? I ain't gonna do your tallying if you call me names!

@Miniman Nah, it's a dyslexic abbreviation for bad breath.

@BESW That one flew right past me. O.H. is bad breath?

So has anyone else seen this kickstarter for Codespells?

4:15 AM
Ayuh, just ran across it a few hours ago.
Not my thing, but I passed it on.

Videogames: proving haters wrong more and more as they evolve as a medium

@BESW Lol! I should've worked that out.

"Well," Anastasia notes as she runs, "it sort of helps that the people we're fighting are demons, demon summoners, aaaand demon worshipers. Anyone in the middle of their summoning room is not a civilian or an animal, or if they are, they're /really/ better off dead." <-Black and white morality.

@Miniman I do not suffer from Spoonerism, but I occasionally indulge in it.
@Lord_Gareth That woman has astonishing eloquence and diction mid-sprint.

@BESW I almost replied with one, but I held in the urge.

4:20 AM
@BESW Air mage.

4:35 AM
Also, I suppose black-and-white morality isn't necessarily the right term since she's bringing that up to classify them as combatants (as opposed to noncombatants) and in reference to their terrible practices against prisoners

@Lord_Gareth something just clicked for me, I think I recognised something similar during our gunslinger talk...

Mrr?

Paizo hates system mastery and system masters. It prefers its players be effectively clueless.

@doppelgreener Throwing darts at a board with player options stuck to it while blindfolded.

They also nerf classes they don't like, give them trap options, or outright make the class a trap option. They make the features bad to make the class suck.

4:38 AM
@doppelgreener SKR: Fuck monks, right?

@doppelgreener Or because they want to discourage play of it, which is not (in their minds) the same thing. Remember that this company nerfed monk while believing it is still viable

@doppelgreener I think that's a symptom: Paizo prefers its consumers to be uncritical, and the easiest most obvious way to do that is for players to be ignorant of the things which they might criticise.

The doublethink is pretty staggering

But their preferred players, lacking system mastery, will not even understand this.
@BESW So they will be unable to critique and be ignorant.

In other news, DSP just released Path of War! Wooooooo!

4:39 AM
So Paizo is releasing options and players will be taking them and wondering what's going on that they suck.
If they realise they suck.
Whilst the people with system mastery will know to stick with the good stuff and how to build the bad classes well.

@doppelgreener This is made less likely by Paizo creating adventures in-house that cater to their required play style, emphasizing low-to-no op humanoid enemies.

I notice Paizo has released Pathfinder Technology Guide. I can't help but wonder, from conversations here, how badly nerfed everything in the book will be...

If I wanted to exaggerate the situation by using a disproportionate metaphor, I'd mention that limiting education and controlling the means of information dispersal is a common strategy for any group which wants to maintain power over others that it doesn't deserve.

@BESW Ketchup manufacturers cannot get away with their lies.

To be fair, there are good ideas in play, just in the hands of prepubecent monkies who want total devotion to their system rather than actual thought.

4:42 AM
I am confused what is going on that they are trying to accomplish...

Like, to give an example, there's an adventure where an early encounter is known as That Damn Quasit
I'm going to link a basic quasit
That thing, early in an adventure, is the Eater of Parties in the PF community. It is their idea of a wholly overwhelming encounter requiring hours of pre-planning and in-game strategizing

.. Wow.

Would anyone familiar with PF care to explain why that should not be the case?

16 hp which can be one-shotted?..

Because with a decent cold iron weapon BY ITSELF, any lowbie character could smack that thing down with two hits.

4:44 AM
@Lord_Gareth "Request Entry Too Large."

@Tarmikos11 And perhaps paladin smite or whatever that makes a weapon Good.

Both good reasons. It also lacks offensive power, has to give up its biggest defensive advantage in order to be able to attack, and has relatively low AC for level.

My thought process: "It flies! ...but it's melee-only. Does it have Flyby Attack? ...nope. Byebye."

Why the hell is such a weak monster taking out an entire party EVER?
Oh yeah, idiocy bread by game designers.

I... guess it kills them with Dex damage?..
But no, at worst they'd be catatonic, and then the thing can coup de grace with its 1d4-1 bite...

4:47 AM
@Tarmikos11 To start with, PF players build blaster wizards. Quasit laughs off 2nd level common blast spells

Idiocy bread... That's a good product to sell. Tastes delicious, deals int damage. Might be marketed as magic brownies?

So there's 1/5 people out
Rogue and/or bard can't hit the thing because of suboptimal build and probably can't pierce DR for the same reason
3/5 out of the fight
Fighter couldn't afford decent Dex, cleric blows it off
They get Dex damage'd
And then the quasit moves onto the squishies that can't hurt it

Again, Idiocy.

Wizard: buff the rogue.
Cleric: bless the rogue's weapon.
Fighter: grapple it.
Rogue: stab it.

Barbarian: single swing of giant axe.

4:50 AM
@BESW Congrats, you just made a sub-optimal party beat the quasit. But if they were smart enough to do this they would have built more optimally in the first place.

Unless they didn't have someone to let them know that they were building badly.
Second opinions have saved me from lots of Trap Options.

Fair, but a good mind for tactics is one of the skills that leads to good op.

I am becoming a little worried for my upcoming pathfinder game.

@doppelgreener Do you not know your players?

4:56 AM
The GM spent most of her time in 3.5e. Her group is moving to Pathfinder because it's familiar but they won't know every spell off by heart any longer. I'm joining them. It's deliberately making low rules use, somehow, not sure how yet. I'm just worried about all the trap options, or picking something a designer happens to hate.

@doppelgreener Trap options mean less when the enemies take them too. With some...limited exceptions...pre-made monsters and NPCs suck
The classes are generally balanced with expected opposition
Both are played greatly beneath their potential.

So play to their potential or better and steam-roller everything.

"RUN! It's *a ship in a bottle!*"
"*EEEEEEE!*"
"I hear it took out the tarrasque!"
3

The GM is experienced at optimisation and may recognise this.
At least moderate levels of optimisation.

Those freaking ships, I swear to Asmodeus
They're the Damn Crab of PF

5:02 AM
For those of you who missed that conversation, this is a ship in a bottle.

I guess I'm mainly worried we'll set out to have fun roleplaying and adventures and when it comes to the actual mechanics the system will crap all over us.

@BESW Holy crap, you were serious...

It's a super-fast flyby attack pinger that stays out of range except while attacking, and its "range" is still further away than most spells can travel.

@Miniman That monster really is The Eater of Parties

(I already believe systems like fate would be a better fit for us, but this group may be averse to change)

5:04 AM
@BESW It also has meaningful damage reduction, making counter-archery nearly impossible, while maintaining solid damage on its end.

Right; it's got significant damage reduction against most attacks that can reach that far.

You guys are making this thing sound more dangerous than a roper.

So at the level the system expects you to fight it, you can't
Literally can't

DR 5/bludgeoning means only bludgeoning attacks overcome it, right?

@Magician Right.

5:05 AM
And it remains severely challenging even after the caster starts flying.
@Magician Correct. And wealth guidelines mean that your bows or crossbows are either dealing 1d6 plus nothing or 1d8 plus nothing

It is sling's time to shine, then!

@Magician Sling's range increment is 1/7th of the ship's, or less.

@Magician I always find it ironic how great slings are.

The ship can stay outside sling's maximum range and still be within its own minimum range increment.

I don't actually see the range of its ballista anywhere

5:07 AM
@Magician Well, yes. This is also a problem.
Unless @Lord_Gareth knows of an errata, we have to extrapolate from existing ballistae... which average around 100ft/increment at the low end.

@BESW Pretty much this

Wait, I'm getting the range ratios wrong.
Eh, anyway the sling's range is probably about half the ship's.
(I was thinking thrown rocks.)

In any event @Magician, the absolute worst part about this is unlike some other monsters like this at low levels, the ship has an Intelligence score

Existing ballistae are probably Large at least, and Pathfinder has monster scaling rules for... some things. Probably not range, though.

It's smart enough to use these tactics on its own
And it's driven by hateful elementals that despise landwalkers

5:11 AM
@Lord_Gareth Construct with an Int score? Say wha'?

@Miniman Dude, this is so old it happened in 1e. Get with the times.

So... it shows multiple times up at night, humming Ride of the Valkyries as it pokes every sleeping PC in the eye before flying away.
4

@Miniman Warforged
@Magician Hahaha that would be terrifying

@doppelgreener Pretty much anything from Mechanus, including Inevitables?

Nimblewrights. Force golems.
Also
Force Golems are the best golems
I love them so much
Super tight design, tactically interesting, wonderful fluff
They made a CR 4 golem and it was actually CR 4

5:16 AM
@doppelgreener An overpowered monster is bad enough. An overpowered monster that knows it's overpowered and enjoys its pwnage is so much worse.
5

But with intelligent environmental design, without advancing the golem itself at all, you can create battlegrounds that make the golem up to CR 10 without adding anything else but traps

@Lord_Gareth Your bar is set sadly--but justifiably--low.

@BESW Well, there's the rest of it. It's a telekinetic, sapient CR 4 golem that controls the battlefield by redefining positioning at will
You go to fight it and it's just like, "Bro, did I say you can stand there?"

@Lord_Gareth what is a good place to read about these?

@doppelgreener Monster Manual V
3.5 supplement

5:18 AM
Thanks. :)

Also has magmacore golems (also super cool)
As well as my single favorite monster manual entry, Illurien of the Myriad Glimpses

@Magician ....I have a new appreciation for Spider-Man's banter.
@doppelgreener If you can get the party to try out some new systems, I might be able to help design/find one-shots to showcase them.
Tangentially, I'm still interested in experimenting with hack-and-slash Fate.

@BESW Thanks, I appreciate it. So am I.

@BESW Like, a FATE game about brutal mercenaries that kill ethnically and biologically diverse creatures in their own homes in order to gain fame and wealth from their speceist societies?

...oooh. I just had an idea for Lovecraftian Fate. To the Fate Room!

5:25 AM
The question is mainly what systems. Fate is one. We need something that lets us have exploratory roleplaying - dungeon world may be unsuitable for limiting what we can do and trying to constrain the experience.

LINK ME
TO THE FATE ROOM

 Fate chat and game room

Good questions raised here should hit the main site too! Fudge...

@Magician Well played.

Hrm
Tell me @Magician
Tell me truly
Do I dare to make a blog post about alignments?

5:29 AM
@Lord_Gareth I think it's a played-out topic. As in, battles have raged and dust has settled and no one really believes in them anymore. You're going to, of course, prove me wrong with your forum-going experience.

@Magician Despair, my friend. Despair that all of your hope is in vain. Despair that your faith in Man is a bitter lie made to shield you from a truth the innocent were never meant to bear. Despair and weep, for what you believed must be true is not only false, but still held to be an unproductive end to the debate. Despair, and know true suffering.

@Magician somehow I think we are spoiled

@Lord_Gareth In which case it's a fight you'd be picking with the people who believe in alignments, and doesn't that just make you feel dirty?

@Magician It would actually be a blog about bringing something good out of the alignment system, since removing it is nearly impossible.

@doppelgreener Oh, we absolutely are. And I guess I also don't think much about alignment because I've gone through those alignment fights in my adolescence, and it's been a while.

5:35 AM
he he, link me
that one always gets me

@Lord_Gareth That'd be interesting, then. An "alignment is stupid" post I wouldn't much care for, as I'd just go "yep".

user61230
Wow, the largest rule-change I've ever proposed in Nomic was just passed o.O

I dunno though, not sure how often I want to do stuff about 3.PF specifically

5:51 AM
@Lord_Gareth if it is a "here is something useful to do to at least partially solve the problems" that would be pretty useful
Would also help my Pathfinder group where we are going to run into it being dumb

Speaking of, did you see my opportunity costs thing?

@Lord_Gareth It was pretty good.
I was thinking about action economy at the time, and it kinda helped.

\o/ Yay I'm helpful!
Yeah the important bit about that is having enough options to spend all of your actions without having so many that you have conflicts

@Lord_Gareth Even if you'd probably disapprove of what you were helping with.

@Miniman The increase of mastery awareness is always good in my book.

5:55 AM
@Lord_Gareth Actually, I was working on a videogame design at the time, so...yeah.

....Why would I not approve of videogames?

Didn't see it yet

@Lord_Gareth I have no basis whatsoever for that, it's drawn from my vague impressions of you.

Huh, new follower. Yay!
@Miniman How did I give the impression of not approving of videogames?

@Lord_Gareth From what you've said about systems getting in the way of the story, I guess. I always think of videgogame RPGs as being extremely tightly restricted RPGs, I tend to forget that they're separate in other people's minds.

6:02 AM
Video games can get in the way of the story, if the control system or etc is awful

@Miniman VRPGs are interactive stories within a specific medium. You play them to discover and advance those stories

But by video game standards, a good game supports the story.
Like devil may cry.

TTRPGs are collaborative stories told by a group. You play them to create a fun, interesting tale from the perspective of the main actors.
They have different goals

We say "collaborative improvisational storytelling," D&D says "murderhobo rampage fantasy."

@Lord_Gareth It's interesting when you put it like that, since these aren't the goals I perceive for VRPGs or TTRPGs.
Different people play for different reasons.

6:07 AM
@BESW It's the collaborative, improvised story of fantasy setting mercenaries that defeat varied and challenging enemies with shifting tactics and few morals
You know, A Song of Ice and Fire

@Lord_Gareth Yeah, that was me

Yaaay
Hrm, alignment post tonight or later
On the one hand it's 2 AM
On the other hand I just made hot pockets

Are those different hands? I used to do some of my best writing at 2am in the morning.

@Miniman My best writing has either happened when I'm up way too late, when I'm drunk, or in the grip of suicidal depression.
I really wish my muse would show up when I'm not making poor life choices.
2

@Lord_Gareth Is there a muse for non-creative writing?

6:14 AM
@Miniman Of course. Even strictly non-fiction writing needs to convey information in a manner that makes it comprehensible, clearly conveys its message and engages the reader.
Otherwise no one will learn what you're teaching

And then more League. +7 teamwork and +5 honorable opponent, and miscellaneous friendly and helpfuls, over two games.

Black hells to the one that wrote this test script. "Go through this long process. Save the application. Close it. Now open the load screen. Enter the save reference number we are only now telling you that you should have written down."

Apparently even though I suck, support Zilean is great and I don't suck as much as I think.

@doppelgreener I hear your summons and will dispense suffering presently.

@doppelgreener Once again, I am so glad we have a dedicated test team.
Which I am not a part of.

6:19 AM
@Miniman me too hahahaha. Except I got loaned to them part time this month as the project winds down.
Most of this could be automated.

@doppelgreener That's what every programmer says when they're forced to do testing :P

Should be automated.
@Miniman this stuff could easily be done by a machine. Currently it is being done by the slow, expensive variety of fleshy machine that handles boring tasks by doing them even more slowly, and badly due to being bored. There's little human intelligence necessary here apart from specific steps, which just require a human to hit play, do a thing when the script prompts them to do something, then hit resume.
There are tons of hours and dollars and brains to be saved here.
We say it when it's true!

@Miniman or documentation ;)

Dear goodness. What kind of documentation could possibly be automated? (except for the bad kind)

Forrest|sleep I like Sony better than Microsoft
Forrest|sleep I like Nintendo better than both
Lord_Gareth didn't say he liked Microsoft either
Forrest|sleep still
Childe Lord_Gareth: And yet you work on a product that promotes Pathfinder... (I know it's not Sony, but Paizo is equally evil)
Childe (if not moreso)
Forrest|sleep It benefits him, so it doesn't count :V
Lord_Gareth Paizo is the EA of tabletop gaming, yes
Lord_Gareth But I'm also helping DSP with non-PF projects
IronHeart Then what's Wizards?
@Adeptus Yaaaay thank you.
Okay, too tired for alignment blog tonight
Sleep must happen
It's like
Why
Just....why

6:42 AM
@Lord_Gareth I don't understand the implications of this thing. But goodnight!

Q: Touch attacks on D&D 5e

Corven DallasAs I dont have (yet) the PHB, and looking at this question Does a touch spell require an attack? I assume that touch attacks no longer ignore AC provided by armor, or more exactly because of the new armor rules, make your AC 10+DEX (10 if your armor ignores DEX modifiers?) versus those attacks....

@doppelgreener Buhlman took credit for writing almost the entirety of PF core, thus both handily shutting out all the others that worked on it and absorbing the blame for all of the horrible.
He also copped to an anti-monk bias

I suspect this needs close votes ^
@Lord_Gareth looks like he just said he got to put in everything that he wanted, not that everything put in was his

@doppelgreener Eh, I think he's just confused. The whole touch attack thing seems to be catching a lot of people out.

6:59 AM
@Miniman he's asking about PHB spells and mechanics that would be explained if he owned the PHB

@doppelgreener This is all stuff covered in Basic though.

He doesn't, so he's asking us to basically break copyright and help him not need to purchase a book
