you try a whole bunch of stuff and eventually you figure out what works (or some wiser person tells you so you'll quit spamming chat and/or editing your posts)
I think there are two basic ideas behind them: a) "We've made good PrCs if they want them, so if these aren't as good it doesn't matter;" b) "If we give non-casters the effects of specific popular spells, that'll make them even with casters!"
Would you mind helping to corral the troops over the next few days, and working with me to identify and codify any PbC-specific house rules that may be necessary?
I love internet: http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames/decades/names1880s.html Just roll a d200 to get a name... then roll a d20 here to get a surname: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_common_surnames_in_Oceania.
Until FATE Core (coming out later this month, we hope), each version of FATE was married to a setting (early 1900s pulp adventure, the Dresden Files, etc) and while the general rules were only slowly evolving each version's mechanics and choices were designed to support and encourage that setting's specific game experience.
@Pureferret Most RPG groups meet once a week for between three and [cuckoo] hours. Not many meet more often than that, and many meet much less frequently.
Play-by-Post type games are attractive because the time you spend doesn't have to be any particular time during the day/week.
@Pureferret Yeah. With all that experience, FATE Core is able to be very streamlined because the developers know have great understanding about what is and is not necessary for the system vs the setting.
@Pureferret I've never tried it before at all.
@Pureferret What was the expected frequency of posts in the games you tried?
Don't ask me why I was fixated on coffee - probably just your earlier comments and my personal overindulgence in that drink when I was going through anxiety attacks
@C.Ross no regular game for the last few weeks (life's been crazy for all of us), but Brian and I and Tynam played everway the other night, that was fun
Their opponents were a stereotypical foursome of D&D PCs, and the evil party harassed them, went on object-collection missions that conflicted with the "PCs", and did nasty things to the NPC friends of the "PCs."
Their first assignment was to bring back a hound archon alive so he could siphon its soul to create an evil artifact.
They accidentally level-drained it to death, and spent the rest of the campaign trying to cultivate one of the Adventurers' souls to be a suitable replacement.
@JoshuaAslanSmith it is extremely hard to build a hybrid from scratch that is as effective as a normal character. There are some local optima, but in general it's better if you focus on doing a few, related, things well
like, if you want to be a leader hybrid, check out killswitch
so we will each be incontrol of multiple PCs in a stable that all belong to a guild that contract to go on missions. Since we will all have multiple PCs I've built one for each 4e role, but also wanted to build this PC taht could function sorta as both leader and controller if not enough people show up
@JoshuaAslanSmith I don't think he is; Zachiel has a history of being frustrated by play-by-post and tabletop D&D 3.5 experiences with unusual character-creation requirements and goals.
Not doing bad. Still jetlagged, I'm afraid.
Yourself? You usually seem to be on chat when I'm away.
unfortunately the majority of my experience is 4e related and a lot of other people who lurk a lot (great guys though who've helped me out on questions like waxeagle) respond before I can
trying to dabble in savage worlds a bit to broaden my scope
Well, you can always help through edits/tagging, workshopping questions and answers with other people in chat, and so forth.
Our tag wikis could use some love.
And just being around, leaving comments and being friend on chat is helpful: this is a community and it's nice when it feels alive. Good citizens make that happen.
@BESW yeah, our IT director is standardizing job descriptions, titles and salaries. The job description my boss just handed me has my current salary at the very low end of the title. And it's a job description I'm about to be over qualified for (2-4 years of experience, I'm currently completing 5).
@JoshuaAslanSmith @ObliviousSage has been beating me to the punch way more often lately. I'm trying to branch out as well. At one point a guy was going to run dresden for us, but not sure where that is. I run Dread occasionally, but it's not very good question fodder, and I really want to play/run a heroics game at some point
