As a general rule, having no electricity for six days, in the middle of winter, is about as unfun as you could possibly imagine... It's good to be back. :D
@JohnCavan Ouch
@EsaPaulasto - Kid got off easy. I've known cats that would have continued that bout.
@Jeremy - Winter ice storm hit southern Ontario in the Toronto region and put a huge region out of power. We were 2 hours shy of 6 full days without power, but we have a wood fireplace and camping gear (we're campers), so we made do until we could get a generator.

Q: What kind of paint is safe to use on a bird cage?

JohnFxMy bird's cage is starting to show it's age a bit and could use a fresh paint job. I've heard that you have to be careful with the type of paint you use since birds will pick at the bars of their cage. What type of paint should I use that is safe for birds and is there anything else I should be...

Oh, six days is a long one! Here too, when a storm hits and cuts power it may last for 6 minutes (often) or even as long as 6 hours (rare) but it has also happened in rural low-populated parts of Finland that the powercut has last 6 days. Never experienced thatlike myself, not even a full 24 hours.

last power cut I experienced was far over fifteen years ago … and probably not longer than some minutes
except for some bumps in the power network, that make your computer reset, but only had one or two of those in the last few years
funny that people here still complain about the quality of our energy distribution systems :D

@Baarn You must be living in a densely populated area where powerlines are crisscrossing all around, and where a good part of the lines have been dug underground.
Those tiny bumbs in current happen when a one power routing is switched to a detour. It only takes a tiny fraction of a second to disconnect old route - reconnect to new route.
What happens here in Finland is that a lot of households in rural areas are supplied by only one major powerline, and in storms it may happen that a tree (or just a cut-off branch) falls on the lines and takes the whole area down. Power won't come back before the company has sent their men to physically remove the tree or branch off the power lines.
In case of a major big storm it may take quite a long time to fix all the powerlines that have been cut due to the trees falling everywhere. We do have a lot of forests here ;)
That's the only powerline to our 2nd home. Photo taken at 5 a.m. in August this year.

@EsaPaulasto yeah most parts of germany are somewhat populated. plus everything infrastructure-ish here is quite overengineered in terms of availability
… except internet of course, we still live in the dark ages
Hehe, I dare say the infra is not overengineered by German standards, but yeah, maybe by the standards the rest of the world follow ;)
My brother-in-law is from Germany, married to my sister 16 years and been living in Finland the last 5 years.
Still doesn't speak any Finnish though. He comes along too nicely with using just English :P

Q: Bugs Bunny was always eating carrots, good role model or not?

James JenkinsPretty much every iconic image of Bugs Bunny shows him with a carrot in his hand/paw. For many people this image of Bugs, is one of the first things that pops into their mind when considering what to feed a bunny. If you put a carrot in with a bunny, they will be extremely happy and do their bes...

Q: My rabbit is digging at the carpet in the corner of the living room, what should I do?

James JenkinsSometimes when my bunny is out running around the house she will go in the corner and dig at the carpet. I stomp and clap my hands while saying "No" sternly, and she stops but will often go back to doing it a while later. Sometimes months will pass without her digging like this, then it will st...

@J.Mroz Re:"We have three mini lops - extremely spoiled house bunnies the lot of them!" We have 5 house rabbits living in 3 different colonies in the house. Are yours bonded or living seperately?
P.S. Chores are calling, be back later.

Q: How successful is Cancer treatment?

cimmanonAbout 3 years ago, my cat was diagnosed with Cancer (Lymphoma). The vet told us that if we went with surgery, the best we could hope for is another year or two before it returned. She was 10 years old at the time and already to the point where she was eating very little due to her stomach being...
