@JaredSmith, it seems to me that it shouldn't be a problem to hold a recount to exclude invalid votes if they're likely to change the outcome. Although I've just skimmed the Wikipedia article on Bush v. Gore which leaves me confused.

On September 20th the provisional results included a seat for Maureen Pugh from the National Party, but the final results on October 4th reassigned that seat to Steffan Browning from the Green Party.

Yes, the 2000 presidential race was a total cluster-@#$%, and a great example of what can happen in America in close races. So yeah, perhaps that sort of thing is a little more geared towards the national character of New Zealanders than Americans.
