@Phonon I was doing my graduate work in signal processing, but I took a job so it is backburner now.
nice and quiet in here now.

@Phonon My masters thesis involves a decent amount of signal processing at both the analog and digital level. I am more on the communication side of things for work.

This is turning out to be very different than any private beta I've participated in in the past.

@Pearsonartphoto Indeed

@Pearsonartphoto How so?

Much fewer questions, for one.
But the questions are more intelligent.

@Pearsonartphoto I noticed on Fitness that we had few questions/day too but in the end a site can pick up steam nonetheless

It's very good if we can keep the questions up. I'm happy not to have seen "What's some useful Fourier transforms?" yet.

1:42 PM
I'm going to ask it if it makes you feel better.

@TimN even that could be turned useful if he can show some input data and what he's trying to do with it
then the answer could point out why some work and others don't ;)

@IvoFlipse "What's some useful Fourier transforms for [task]" would be a much better question :)

@TimN I think we can help set the tone by not directly downvoting questions, but leaving comments to guide the OP to a better question. If he doesn't follow up THEN we downvote them

Completely agree. We're few enough in private beta for that to work.

I think it will work as well, I'm just amazed at the difference, that's all.

1:53 PM
@Pearsonartphoto It all depends on the community really, Programmers and Math were a headache
whereas Fitness for instance is very meek, no discussions at all

@IvoFlipse Are you saying that there were harmful meta discussions?
or general disagreement on the main site?

On Math they screamed bloody murder about the moderation and Programmers got a significant scope change which a lot didn't like

I see

Q: My letter of resignation

Akhil MathewI have just submitted my resignation as a moderator on this website to Jeff Atwood. I would like to use this thread to explain my reasons. When I make a significant time commitment to a given organization, I expect certain standards from that organization. I do not, of course, claim these to be ...

Q: The unilateral removal of comments by Jeff Atwood

Akhil MathewInitially, I was going to write this as a response to this discussion. It seems, however, a larger issue, which I think merits a separate thread, perhaps a sequel to this one. For people who have not read the threads, the context is that two comments of Pete L. Clark on the thread about sponsored...

Well, the ones that I've been involved with have all been quite different, to say the least.

More drama than a whole season of Desperate Housewives

60 upvotes each. Tough to be the SE Team.

And I thought Zypher was the controversial mod...

@Pearsonartphoto on Scifi? That was mostly due to us mods backing him up in a private room :P

2:16 PM
LOL.

So far this site appears to be nothing but blue users :p

@jcolebrand Well chat at least

Jup
and meta in large part
Also, I think I bit off more than I could chew agreeing to join the beta :p I am realizing I know almost NOTHING about DSP :p

but I know how to edit, and how to research, and how to clean things up :\

@jcolebrand Sounds familiar, I'm not advanced enough to get these questions yet
but I did want to see this site created

My professor in grad school told me I should look into GIS techniques rather than fMRI, does anyone know why? Other than that the GIS guys probably have more experience with their data

6:48 PM
@IvoFlipse Was it for a specific application or just general career advice?

@TimN my pressure plate data

2 hours later…
8:45 PM
I thought I knew more than I really do about signal processing. I mean, I've had 2 classes in it, you'd think I'd know something...

@Pearsonartphoto well that does show that questions shouldn't have to be elitist, they just have to be genuine. There's a difference between a beginner asking a question and a beginner question
Like asking "What's a Fourier transformation?" is silly, but just because you've had it explained to you, doesn't mean that you know how to properly apply it or how it really works

9:34 PM
@jcolebrand Same here. Also a blue user. I wonder if other private betas are similar?
On an unrelated note, why don't we have any feeds in here? Fix in progress...

@KevinVermeer Fitness definitely wasn't I guess there's just a lot of interest in this one from a core group of users

@IvoFlipse Electronics wasn't either, though we started with a group from an SE 1.0 site...
Added ticker feeds for questions from the main site and from meta, and message feeds for blog posts and podcasts.

@KevinVermeer great :D

10:06 PM
@IvoFlipse My apologies for the sudden influx of blog/podcast posts. This should be much more useful after the initial feed diarrhea.

@KevinVermeer I know :)
9 messages deleted
Fixed :)

@IvoFlipse Thank goodness. We really need more moderators in this room to keep this place cleaned up.

Hey who what?

Q: What does a "vector" in a hidden Markov model mean?

StupidOneI know that a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) is used in speech recognition and understand it to some degree. However, what I don't know is how input (speech) is "transformed" to a vector which in later used in HMM. How do you get a vector from a sound input? Is this vector readable by a human?

Nice turn around here :)

@IvoFlipse Agreed! Though we might want to ask one of the pro-tem mods to close/reopen it to clear the close votes. I think this is a fine beginner question, and we don't want beta users to come in and see that it's waiting to be closed.

10:15 PM
@KevinVermeer probably leaving a comment would suffice
if you leave a "TBD" in it, we can find the comment later and delete it ;P

@IvoFlipse How would you find that? IIRC, the SE search engine doesn't index comments.

@KevinVermeer Data.SE
and or simply sort by date ;P

@IvoFlipse I wish I understood SQL well enough to use sites like Data.SE. Unfortunately, I'm so lost there that I would have a hard time composing a query to do a search. The FAQ isn't real useful, and the top queries are quite complex.

@KevinVermeer I feel like that on most programming problems :P

10:31 PM
@IvoFlipse Give me a C-like language, and I can get things done. Throw me into web-dev territory, and I'll flop. I've got about 20 hours of Javascript (for scripting a C++ app...), and I can do HTML well enough to interact on a forum, but that's about the extent of my knowledge.

@KevinVermeer I only know some Python, so I'm reading as much as I can to learn about anything really :P
I need to improve my knowledge about general computing (I never really bothered with understanding electrical circuits for instance), basic computer science stuff like sorting and algorithms, math and statistics (had some of that at grad level though) mixed with learning other programming lanuages/paradigms

@IvoFlipse I don't know much Python, but I hear it's a great language to start out in. It looks like it will be popular on this site, if data mining/analytics statistics have a good correlation with our visitors: kdnuggets.com/2011/08/…

But I always remind myself that a year ago I only knew a bit of Matlab and no Python, back in March I didn't know anything about GUIs or database and yet I did manage to build this: superivo.wordpress.com/2011/07/26/world-meet-my-alpha-version

11:27 PM
@KevinVermeer This is the first privBeta I know of with so many blues ;)

@jcolebrand - A recipe for success?
