Actually I was going through the blog which you have linked in your SE bio, and I saw that inorganic question from the 45th ICho preparatory problems which you had posted
I believe that I may have a better and more mechanism-related solution to the first part where you have to identify the trimer X, as it may be a little crude to simply get an answer by hit-and-trial of the molecular formula
