12:55 AM
@lyxal ah, yeah, that is fair enough. i guess the direction was just lyxal has an idea and is going in a direction and everyone else makes changes surrounding it that hopefully goes in the same direction or at least doesn't pull it in another direction :P
also it would make more sense for a discussion to be a discussion, no?
rather than a file on the sandbox repo :p
DISCUSSION: The Future of Vyxal - please take a look and answer this when you have the time.

It does not need to be super thorough or anything, but just offer some insights as to your personal opinion and feelings about things.

1 hour later…
2:15 AM
Here's my take on whether or not we should have Jira: having a tool meant for extreme productivity could be helpful for giving people a feel of how much organisation we actually need.
If it feels too extreme, we can always find something more suitable
The best way to manage jira if we decide to use it would be to trial it for a few weeks or so
See how it goes
Use it for organising the rewrite
And if we were to decide that it works well for us during a trial period, we could continue using it
This is just a suggestion that's open to feedback
There haven't been any hard decisions yet

Seconded aaáãâh śpéłlîñg is hard

Also, just a little heads up: uni has resumed for me, so I might not be as active as I have been lately
This shouldn't impact too much though
Because I managed to run LoTM while at uni
I think the main thing to know is that I might not be fully available sometimes
I am still eager to commit to Vyxal
And I'm still eager to commit to the fresh beginning

2:47 AM
@lyxal ayy same

All my old friends from India will be in college soon lol

if i actually took my summer off i would have a lot more time lol
i am in a co-op program - and tbh given that information y'all might be surprised how i can be active here, and tbh i should probably be less active (although most of my activity is between like 9pm and 4am anyway) but fortunately work is rather relaxed for me (as in, i don't need to spend 100% of my time doing things and can still very easily meet my deadlines well ahead of time because i am simply good B) )
(and also i waste more time waiting for people to answer questions or debugging stupid shit anyway)
but to be clear i cannot make any guarantees about committment here because the moment i need to increase my productivity for actual work i will drop progress here (at least during my hours)
after my work term ends i have like a week or two before uni starts
but yeah i can basically spend a good amount of time primarily during the night but can't promise much :p

@hyper-neutrino that's perfectly fine
I'm grateful for any time people spend here
I 100% understand that people have priorities
And I never place any expectations on anyone to actually do anything

Hehe
Bot abuse goes brrr
(this totally isn't a demonstration of the type of fun that I think is okay)

wait, that got posted?

@VyxalBot que?

@hyper-neutrino yes

i should disambiguate which repository got released then
it should only pin for Vyxal/Vyxal but i thought i took the announcement off for all other repos ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

3:11 AM
hyper-neutrino pushed a commit to VyxalBotSE/master: mention which repository got a release if it wasn't Vyxal/Vyxal

@user I unpinned the commit message because it's better to use the discussion.

@hyper-neutrino pulling new changes; I will restart in a few seconds if any updates are available

@lyxal 👍

@lyxal and the discussion allows for better formatted replies too

i am smart

aight

hyper-neutrino pushed a commit to VyxalBotSE/master: better release message

Okay so if y'all ever make any vyxal releases, make sure to actually version them correctly kekw

3:15 AM
updated it to say "released in" lol, and also yeah use proper names kekw

You’re probly the only one doing that’ lyxal

Then y'all need to start making vyxal releases :P
Fun fact: there was once a constant for 69

oh this is oh so very surprising

Course there was

the better question is why is there no longer one :p

3:19 AM
Old vyxal eas crazy lol (still is :pp
@hyper-neutrino it’s now an transformer turns everything into 69

I paid redwolf 50 rep to do the same with ash
What a waste of rep

“Paid”
If only rep eere money…

4:18 AM
alright i shut down the webhook server just now
so it should stop
85 messages moved to Trash
85, holy shit lol

dang it
I was going to do that

if you kick the bot it will stop and then immediately resume as soon as it can, IIRC

@hyper-neutrino some of those are mine trying to interact with the bot

but it was trying to post each of the 83 commits to experimental

4:20 AM
oof

because I republished the branch after realising deleting it didn't archive it anywhere

I had no clue it would post each individual commit
@VyxalBot u good bro

alright starting it back up, hope it doesn't continue going

@VyxalBot lol u good my epic gamer

4:22 AM
@lyxal I am doing you.

oh
yep it seems good

5:19 AM

@lyxal

is this required ?

where are these?

@lyxal when are you starting the rewriting?
@hyper-neutrino contributing.md on Fresh-Beginnings

oh i hadn't noticed we had that, i've only seen the primary readme

5:27 AM
hyper-neutrino pushed a commit to Vyxal/Fresh-Beginnings: fix small typo

i wonder if it is better to have this on a branch or fork the repo into a fresh beginnings fork and then contribute that back into the main repo
idk what is more git-like

@hyper-neutrino I think a branch is fine
@PyGamer0 once we sort out a few more things in the community
For example: code style, rewrite plan, code reviews
@PyGamer0 no. I took that line from the contribution guide from Atom
@PyGamer0 the link is to the Trash chat room
Because that's what their opinions are :p

why / how did i start contributing to vyxal in the first place anyway

LoTM probably

i have expressed opinions on your flagging system that have also not been very positive (although not as extremely negative) too and don't like using stack based languages in general (nothing wrong with them, i am simply bad) so hmmmmmm

5:34 AM
Ah, but see, you don't just say "vyxal bad" without any justification
your opinions on flags are based on experience and careful consideration

that is a good point

like if you're genuinely interested in the development/path of Vyxal, then any opinion, good or bad, is helpful
but if you're just jumping on a bandwagon to say "vyxal bad", then your complaints don't hold that much value.
because such complaints are just trolling

yeah that's fair enough. but yeah "vyxal bad" is either an obvious meme (so therefore not helpful) or isn't and then still isn't helpful so. :p
looks like my first message here was a bug report which i should've opened as an issue on GH anyway
in like mid april

@hyper-neutrino that's pretty much what I mean to say, but more concise
@hyper-neutrino if you think we're unorganised now, imagine how unorganised we were back in April

5:38 AM
back before LoTM and the surge of new users ;)

so it looks like your theory was right; my activity mainly started in early may and seems that it was cuz i was trying to write answers for LotM and kept getting memed and had to ask stuff here :P

Then the roughly 1k rep I spent in May did it's job ;)

yeah i can't really pinpoint exactly where i started contributing but it looks like it was just cuz it looked cool and i decided to do it for LotM and then got interested enough to maybe propose some ideas, then possibly do some coding, and i think converting my jelly compendium to vyxapedia got me active here :p

ah right i remember trying to do that and getting memed several times by not using vyxal features right lol

5:43 AM
@lyxal 1.3k rep to be exact

> kA¦λṘ:L‹^꘍;MṘ⁋
you can tell this was written by someone who a) doesn't know vyxal features b) is not used to imperative-like golfing :p

> kZ¦ṘƛL‹$꘍
that's written by someone who has a years worth of Vyxal experience ;)

@Lyxal i refuse to turn to the dark side of (ab)using flags :P — hyper-neutrino ♦ May 2 at 3:03

@lyxal i knew about it

@PyGamer0 then you can ignore the big ping too

5:57 AM
Lyxal pushed a commit to Vyxal/Fresh-Beginnings: Update Who.md

@VyxalBot why did you add me in the list 0_0

we might have to wait until monday morning (eu/us time) for more responses :p weekends are a bit dead as usual
this weekend's felt a lot more dead both here and in TNB TBH, even compared to normal weekends

@hyper-neutrino so whats the time for you? is it sunday?

it is monday 2AM

@PyGamer0 well you're in the organisation, so why shouldn't I?

5:59 AM
@hyper-neutrino 2AM!

yeah hyper does that

if you know anything about my sleep schedule

stays awake at silly hours

this should not be surprising :p

oof

6:00 AM
i am frequently up past 4

meanwhile, it's 4PM in the future over here

damn how's the future looking

@lyxal and 11:30 am in the middle

@hyper-neutrino standard
not much happens today

nice
world economy doesn't collapse yet?

6:00 AM
not yet

you'd have to ask @Ausername
They live 2 hours ahead of me

@lyxal where?

@PyGamer0 New Zealand

6:10 AM
damn y'all out here living in these cool and fancy places
meanwhile i live in canada

See now I think Canada is cool and fancy

well, by literal temperature, it is cooler than australia :D

That's not very hard to accomplish though (:

true :p

6:53 AM
@Underslash I'm proud of you for remembering elements that I don't

im moving up in the world lol

@Underslash do you have a github account?

yeah

Would you like to join the vyxal organisation?

sure
im not sure how much ill contribute, but that sounds cool

6:58 AM
There's no contributions required

should I throw my acc in chat?

Yes
I need the username kekw

Underslash12
you probably could have just figured that one out with a bit of time lol
im in

Being a member of the organisation does not equate to any obligations to contribute code

I wouldn't think so, but I'd like to contribute at least partly

7:14 AM
Contributions are welcome, but just know that we're currently planning a rewrite of the interpreter
And we're also figuring out how to organise things better
Hey wait have you seen VyxalBot yet @Underslash?

I have not

@lyxal I am doing spectacularly.

All of my commands start with @VyxalBot or !!/

- To add yourself to the ping list, use "ping me"
- To remove yourself from the ping list, use "don't ping me"
- To evaluate Vyxal code, use "(execute|run|run code|evaluate)", followed by code, flags, and inputs inside inline code blocks (multiline code is not supported; provide multiline input in multiple code blocks)
- To ping everyone, use "hyperping" or "ping every(body|one)"

since when was this a thing
this is real cool

Since about a week ago probably

that makes since then
@VyxalBot oh god, the hyperping

7:18 AM
!!/issue Sandbox We can raise issues from chat now Really cool enhancement

Vyxal-Bot opened issue #8 in Vyxal/Sandbox: We can raise issues from chat now

and what is the Sandbox?

Our testing ground for bot stuff

ah
good name
so i was reading that "post" that you linked

It's where you can goof around with things like file creation/deletion, repo settings, issue creation and so forth

7:19 AM
did the recent cleanup fail then?

Horribly.

Ask anyone who's been here all week and they'll tell you it was a horrible mess of miscommunication
So instead, we're going to start from scratch and build it back up properly

therere should be a public repo that contains all vyxal answers posted in cgcc and their explanations to show what vyxal can do

No legacy code, just clean programming

7:21 AM
@PyGamer0 if thats not already a thing, that would be handy

@PyGamer0 heh, that's called codegolf.stackexchange.com/search?q=Vyxal

@lyxal but on github

That's kind of what we're aiming for with vyxapedia
To have searchable idioms
@hyper-neutrino does vyxapedia have the capacity for idioms?

not presently but i can add it as a category if wanted

Nice
@Underslash ooh I forgot something
!!/run lyxal

7:25 AM
what

Well duh

no infix support?

damn
ive been gamed on

@PyGamer0 That's how postfix works

@lyxal thats how stack based works
yes my language supports infix

7:27 AM
it is not really accurate to call this postfix notation either
it is literally just stack based
how does infix even work
how do you pop an element that doesn't even exist on the stack yet

@hyper-neutrino will it into existance

oh okay my bad

Yes I did spend 3 minutes making that

@hyper-neutrino this is how

7:30 AM
@hyper-neutrino don't bruh me when it's 3.30am

@PyGamer0 why would you even do that though

@hyper-neutrino its a feature
!!/run * (+ 3 4) 5

@PyGamer0 5

ah yes the 5 again

@PyGamer0 well what did you expect trying to do prefix?

7:42 AM
also why tf are you bracketing prefix expressions

well its obviously to make a for loop using the implicit input of 0 to ignore that portion of the code entirely

Lol

8:00 AM
Is anyone thinking about making a Vyxal interpreter in JS?

A Username tried once
@AviFS have you seen this?

Oh no way!!
I hadn't, thanks
Might contrib
Do you think the interp would be faster if in js?

Depends on how it's written
If it's optimised, then maybe
Otherwise, it'd probably just end up being the same speed as python
@AviFS you should also check out the fresh beginnings branch on the main repo

ooh, thanks!
Looks like it isn't pushed

Wait wrong link
There we go
Thus far it's mostly planning for the rewrite
And the plan is to take things a bit slower this time
Making sure we have everything organised and all in a row before we go ahead and actually write code

8:08 AM
I'm so lost!
> Vyxal will still be transpiled. Unless someone presents a feasibile way to make vyxal interpreted, I want to stick with the simpler option.
Transpiling is easier?

For me, yes

Wait, there's nooooo code!
I have no idea at all how to start
But also, is this for js or python?
It doesn't mention changing the language

For python
@AviFS so don't

Also, do you transpile to python & then run eval()?

Wait until we plan it first

8:11 AM
Sounds good!

@AviFS yes
Anyhow, I have to go for a bit now
!!/bye

@lyxal o/

I'd consider using Lark for parsing
I'm down to write the parser!
And once you have it nicely parsed, you might be able to think about interpreting it
Although, I'm not sure interpreting is better than transpiling, exactly...
But if feels like Vyxal code itself will be more easily debuggable if it's being interpreted... and it just seems more sane somehow
So maybe that is better?
How do people feel about me writing a real parser?
Aside from that though, I'll prob be out
More interested in writing in js so it can be used more easily in webapps

maybe write vyxal in PyPy

8:29 AM
We'll cover all that when we actually get to code writing.
So far, I still want to plan everything

@lyxal like?
what do you want to plan

File formats, code styles
Contribution guides
All that sort of stuff
We'll move onto that once there's more feedback on the discussion hyper created

@lyxal we can strictly enforce PEP8.
btw how did Vyxal get messed up?

Code clean up
There was miscommunication
Which ended up causing confusion

4 hours later…
12:31 PM
@AviFS the vyxal parser already works good
And also, lark seems to be mostly for programming languages where tokens are more than one character long, and things aren't grouped together in different ways
also, to quote the fresh beginnings readme: "I want to keep the current parser and dictionary - those are good"

Lyxal pushed a commit to Vyxal/Fresh-Beginnings: Delete How to deal with flag variables.txt

12:49 PM

Mind you the online site has a version where that was an issue

In what version is that not an issue?

v2.5.3
Which is kinda ironic

12:58 PM
Isn't that the current version?

Not what's being run online

What version is running online?

a few commits after v2.5.2

Also, still waiting for a How.md
