12:19 AM
Hard to tell.

7 hours later…
7:14 AM
@Daniil that's good :)
morning!

7:25 AM
:) It's pretty late where I am.

3AM? yea... :)

:)

user435118
8:05 AM
@ifconfig @JacobB I think we will make a great mod team :)

user435118
I’m not sure I’ll be elected though as other candidates have more rep and know more about drones than me. But I know more about SE and moderation (flagging, reviewing etc.) so hopefully that will make up for it

The election has yet to start :P Relax a little ;)

user435118
8:28 AM
@Tinkeringbell Good idea :)

I just went through the proposed questions... they seem interesting, to say the least ;)
There's a bit of overlap between a few of them though, like the ones about closing, or deleting comments :)

user435118
So are the top 10 selected for candidates to answer?

I think so... though if there's overlap in the top 10, I think it may be considered to consolidate 2 questions into a single broader question, and take nr. 11 too.

user435118
What’s the overlap?

For example: drones.meta.stackexchange.com/a/120/94 is similar to but a bit narrower than drones.meta.stackexchange.com/a/146/94, but they're both in the top 10 right now :)

user435118
8:40 AM
I see

user435118
Will CM’s compile the questions for us?

user435118
Or do we do it ourselves?

I think the CMs will at least help :) We had JNat's help on the IPS questionnaire.

user435118
Hopefully :)

user435118
12:12 PM
@Tinkeringbell Do you have any idea why people were downvoting my meta question?

Nope, no clear clues at all :/ Perhaps they find it too trivial (so downvotes for 'not useful'), we've talked about it as mods a few times but see no clear solution. I hope my comment sneaks in some better votes ;)
MSE is... mysterious sometimes :|

yea
I wouldn't mind much

user435118
12:33 PM
@Tinkeringbell Agreed

user435118
@Tinkeringbell Did you vote down?

@Daniil Why do you think I would fix a question, then vote it down?

user435118
@Tinkeringbell Good point ;)

user435118
12:59 PM
How do you add a block quote inside a spoiler?

user435118
Or is that not possible?

I must admit that's outside my knowledge. You could try out some stuff in the MSE formatting sandbox or search the page to see if there's already something similar? meta.stackexchange.com/questions/3122/formatting-sandbox
Looking at it, I would guess the markdown to be something similar to >! >

user435118

user435118
Doesn’t render properly ^

user435118
Came across that in a FP review

1:09 PM
Hmm. Link?

user435118
I need to review it first before I put a link

user435118
I Will just remove the second block quote for now

What does the markdown show?

user435118
Reviewed twice now:

user435118
1:11 PM
Two suggesting edits on the same post...

Ah. Can't see markdown there :(

user435118

Can't see their markdown there either, because the edit button is saying there's already a pending suggested edit. ;)

1:28 PM
@Daniil have you tried >! Text ?
Oops
Three backticks either side of the Text
(Appears the markdown works in chat though)

@Kralc Aren't backticks for code blocks, not spoiler markdown?

I'm thinking that code block in spoiler might substitute for block quote by giving some visual distinction
But yes, it isn't quite what was asked for
>! <blockquote>This works?</blockquote>
^ I think that is the right solution (-:

user435118
@Kralc That doesn''t work

user435118
The text below the blockquote then isn't a spoiler

user435118

1:45 PM
So it is ... this must be a bug?

user435118
Scared to post this on Meta.SE now, 2 downvoted q's in 1 day...

Feel free to comment saying you have the same problem - as you do!

user435118
I suggested an edit

2:05 PM
I added the markdown, but I want the picture in case others don't have the problem.
Thanks

user435118
No problem

Heh, others have the same problem ;) It's not looking good on Chrome either. Welcome to MSE! :)

user435118
@Tinkeringbell You use Chrome?

@Daniil It's that or Internet Explorer/Edge on the work laptop :)
But I use it at home too, yeah ;)

user435118
How dare you :(

2:07 PM
I'm old! :P

user435118
Who ever uses IE... :/

user435118
Use FireFox

user435118
Do you use Google?

Yep :)
I had Firefox for a while, on an Ubuntu VM.

user435118
I use Duck Duck Go

2:08 PM
Was do-able but if you're used to Google and Chrome, you're likely to stick with that ;)

user435118
Chrome tracks you way too much

I have no secrets ;)

user435118
Google trackers were found on 79% of websites I visited

user435118
@Tinkeringbell What are you implying? ;)

@Daniil A lot :P
Nah, but ... I don't care enough to make a deal out of it. I grew up with Internet Explorer, then moved to Chrome somewhere around university age...

user435118
2:11 PM
How old are you, approximately?

user435118
If you don't want to say it's ok

I'm 28, almost 29.

user435118
That's around what I thought you were, male I assume?

Wrong ;)

user435118
...

2:15 PM
No worries :D
People do that all the time :P

user435118
A female software developer...

user435118
I guess I'm very stereotypical

@Daniil Now read that in a David Attenborough voice ;)

user435118
@Tinkeringbell I don't get it?

@Daniil He's the one that is a voice over for a lot of nature documentaries, isn't he?
"here we see a female software developer, building a nest... ed loop"

user435118
2:17 PM
I get it now xD

@Daniil Vivaldi at home, Chrome at work
it's basically the same but in a different flavour

user435118
@CaldeiraG Do you recommend it?

@Daniil Absolutely, Vivaldi was made for former employees of Opera (my previous browser before Opera was in the hands of a chinese company) and carries a lot of features
I think they just released one about those trackers you mention?
To block them
to be fair, ubO does the same
so it's somewhat redundant for me
> before Opera was
*got into the hands

user435118
I'll download it now and see what I think

user435118
I love the not a robot question when creating an account:

user435118
2:31 PM

XD
I consider Vivaldi a power-user browser while chrome is more of a out-of-the-box browser

user435118
I already forgot my password :/

user435118
Posting from Vivaldi :)

user435118
No mobile app though...

user435118
I'll stick to FireFox for mobile

user435118
2:42 PM
It imported my history/passwords from FireFox - neat

@Daniil There is one

user435118
Is there?

Android one
iOS i don't think so?

user435118
Oh, I mean iOS

Yeah, no iOS for now
reason being this one
nvm
got confused

user435118
3:00 PM
Anyway, I'm off

user435118
Thanks for the recomendation

user435118
3:27 PM
@Tinkeringbell I have great news

user435118
I’ll email you

3:45 PM
Whoa there... it's my turn for 135 unread messages, I suppose... :

1 hour later…
5:04 PM
lol @ifconfig same :)

@Daniil Party!!!
That's good news :)

6:02 PM
@ifconfig we had about 585 users on day 25 and 26, but then gained between 10-30 users per day on days 27, 28, and 29. I was wondering if you might know where the new traffic came from? Hot Network Questions, or did Bardwell do something? Maybe a Reddit post?
@Daniil What's the good news! Secrets don't make friends!! hahaha

I honestly have no idea. Maybe just organic growth?

@NikeDattani Now that you're here... meta.stackexchange.com/questions/347947/… might be useful for you to check out in relation to drones.meta.stackexchange.com/a/154/94 and drones.meta.stackexchange.com/a/155/94 ;)

@Tinkeringbell I've always been here and been reading all comments on my posts, so if you commented earlier I would have seen it. However it's okay now: I will read that Meta thread, I might not necessarily agree with it though.

@NikeDattani Yeah, it's a bit hard to put a full q/a pair in a comment though... I'd have put that link in a comment later tonight if I hadn't spotted you talking in here :)

@ifconfig There seems to be something more though, because the number of users didn't really go up between days 25 and 26 and suddenly it's going up by 10-30 users/day.
@Tinkeringbell okay.

6:10 PM
🤷‍♂️I haven't been able to figure it out. I still suspect organic growth from searches or word of mouth.

Has there been any recent Hot Network Questions?

It may be HNQ: if people want to vote from there, they'll have to get an account.
It may be Smokedetector, has this site had any spam yet? Anyhow some people get an account purely to help the bot flag spam if there is any.
It may indeed be searches or word of mouth as well.
@NikeDattani There's been a few over the past few days, yeah.
The one about flying a UAV with a banner popped up, there's been 2? about centers of gravity I think, and then today the one Daniil wrote about disposing of a drone as waste.

user435118
@Tinkeringbell Yay

I think Daniil made a chatroom, most should be logged there :)

user435118
Never thought this moment would come

user435118
6:13 PM

user435118
Bar 2/3 before I made the chatroom

user435118
Can't help but stare at my Travel profile :)

user435118

Oh, it went through already?! That's quick :D

@Tinkeringbell I see: so all 3 answers have been, that putting your email address in your profile can attract spam (I figured that already, I mean I figured that this was why they put @.... instead of @stackoverflow.com There's a lot of ways around that: for example putting an image of the email address instead of the email address itself. Or putting "name@company.com" or something like that. The most popular I think, is: name AT gmail DOT com.

6:14 PM
Well, that should look good on your nomination ;)

user435118
I'm not sure if it has completed

user435118
I am expecting around 16k

@NikeDattani There's another thing that's important for community moderators (so not SE employees): Keep moderation in 1 place. If you have a private chat with a user in a room on SE, you keep a link to the room it was in somewhere. If you move to e-mail, you're going to be in a lot more trouble if things go south and a user starts accusing you of things you didn't do.

user435118
Look at my badge activity: travel.stackexchange.com/users/105447/…

user435118
lol

6:16 PM
(That could've been an answer to your questions from a nominee, though it's not that obvious for people that aren't already moderating).
@Daniil :D Are they only doing travel, or others as well?

@Tinkeringbell It's not possible to make a private chat on Stack Exchange though, is it?

@NikeDattani It is :)
Moderators can make private chatrooms that only moderators and the people invited can see.

user435118
@Tinkeringbell I requested ELL as I had 2k there, I had 1.5k on MSE but can't retrieve my user ID...

@Tinkeringbell Can we test that?

It's a tool that's not to be used too often though.

user435118
6:20 PM
@NikeDattani Mods have a private chat room on every site and have TL (Teachers Lounge) as well

@NikeDattani Ehh, I'm not sure. Like I said, it's a tool that's not to be used without good cause. I don't think 'prove it exists' or 'mere curiosity' is good enough cause ;). But they do exist ;)

@Daniil Those are different from a private chat room with a user.

user435118
@NikeDattani I've been in a private chat room before, take it from me :)

@NikeDattani They're not, really. They're the same kind of rooms, only for the private chat with a user you'd give the user write access :)

@Tinkeringbell A site mod once tried to make a chat room with me and a CM, and it didn't work. A user from the site came and read everything.

6:21 PM
@NikeDattani Oof, yeah, that can get messy.
Basically, there's three 'tiers' of rooms:
- public, like this one

gallery

- gallery: visible to everyone for reading, but only the people with access can talk

and private (today I learned)

exactly.

I have only had to email a CM a couple times, but it would have been nice to be able to email the site mod first, before having to escalate all the way up to CM.

Site mods are busy, but CMs are even more busy.
And the response time can vary (for understandable reasons, since they're doing so much!).

6:25 PM
Generally, we recommend users that want to have a private chat to explain their problem in a moderator flag on one of their own posts. If a moderator then dismisses it, you can use the contact-us link and explain your problem again.
I'm not sure what the response times are for directly e-mailing CMs vs. using the contact-us link... but I generally recommend contact-us ;)

user435118
I found contact us more useful as well, since a larger range of CMs can respond

@Tinkeringbell That's a suboptimal solution the way I see it... :|

@ifconfig It may be... but like I said before, it keeps all correspondence and incidents in a single place, where they can also be easily audited and less easily faked.

There's very little space available in the flag, and what about when the issue doesn't have anything to do with a question or answer? Then you are flagging a post that didn't really deserve to be flagged.

That's a good point, @Tinkeringbell

user435118
6:28 PM
@NikeDattani Then you can ping a mod in chat and ask to open a private room with you

@NikeDattani You're flagging your own post, moderators are usually generous about that ;) Flags allow less characters, that's true... but they also allow for a bit more explanation at least than a public chat ping might allow if the issue is sensitive.

@Daniil Yea, I understand. But it doesn't always work.

There's a huge difference to me between 'Hey, could you open a private room with me' and a flag that states as much as 'Serious thing X happened, see e.g. < link >, can we have a chat?'

@Tinkeringbell Another problem with flagging is that all moderators see it, which doesn't work if there's some issue with one particular mod.

user435118
@NikeDattani If there is a CoC violation or other mod issue use Contact Us

6:31 PM
@ifconfig It's an important point too ;) Before I became a mod on IPS, there was a troublesome user in chat, kinda depressed... I tried keeping in contact through e-mail with them, tried to encourage them to get a job... only to hear back from another chatroom that they got a job as a scammer, because I made a remark of 'take any job!' < that was meant to mean anything from paper delivery to grocery shop clerk XD
So yeah, lesson learned: moderation and chatting goes on SE.

oo

@NikeDattani Yeah, at that point you're at contact-us levels of problems. If there's a problem with one particular mod, you're not very likely to even get a good response from a mod team, you should want to bypass any bias there ;)

user435118
I would personally keep my email open but if it becomes too much (not a specific issue with me, not something private etc.) I would ask them to move to SE

@Daniil I understand. This is what I hope might be avoided more and more though. Contact Us can take a very long time to get a response, and it "escalates" the issue more than necessary (sometimes). The CMs might not even know enough about the situation to really be of much help, compared to the site mods.

user435118
@NikeDattani So what would be your idea if you don't like my idea?

6:35 PM
I've switched to mobile, I'll be a lot slower....
But just know that keeping an e-mail open comes with risks, you gotta be very careful :)

user435118
@Tinkeringbell What risks?

@Daniil So things have been moving a bit fast here for me to keep up. Which is the idea of yours that I didn't like?

@NikeDattani CMs can ask people too, and they too can make private chatrooms to do so. From the few things I've seen of CMs, they're usually very thorough with this stuff.

user435118
Oh, sorry. I thought you replied to I would personally keep my email open but if it becomes too much (not a specific issue with me, not something private etc.) I would ask them to move to SE

user435118
What do you think of that @NikeDattani ?^

6:38 PM
@Tinkeringbell That's appreciated, and so far the 3 answers on Daniil's Meta post have all been about spam. My email address has been open in the public eye in thousands of places since around 2008, so I appreciate the risks.

@Daniil Like I said, anything from disgruntled users insulting you (and you can't suspend them on SE for it because it didn't happen here).. up to, if people want to be malicious, faked conversations and accusations.
@NikeDattani Have you been in a moderating position on any of them?

@Tinkeringbell There can be many parallel experiences that are all equally valid. The CM I talked to most often in Chat used to always tell me to email him rather than talk in Chat, .. there's much more to say but I have too many messages to catch up on now! Sorry everyone, that I'm so slow!
@Daniil Yea, when you hover over a message, does it not highlight which message the person responded to? On desktop it works for me, I don't know about mobile. As for your idea of keeping an email open but switching to private chat when necessarily, I clicked the "star" on it, because I liked to hear that!

@NikeDattani CMs have a company email address, that's probably easier audited than a mods private ones. No worries, I can't type that fast either. I'll make sure there'll be plenty for you to catch up on ;)

The best solution can also depend on the personality of the mod. Some mods are almost never on chat, and even less likely (pretty much 0% likely) to do a private chat with someone.
@Tinkeringbell Maybe site mods could get them too (it wouldn't cost any money), but I can imagine this would not be easy to get approved by the company. A company email address can be seen as an indication that someone is in some sense acting on behalf of the company, which is dangerous. However there could be an alternative email domain that is still owned and auditable by the company, which is not @stackexchange.com but something else.
For example Harvard Extension School doesn't give their students @harvard.edu email addresses, but gives them something else that's similar, but make it obvious that the person is not a Harvard student or employee.

@NikeDattani It's been mentioned a few times in jest, but it's seriously not an option ;)

6:48 PM
@Tinkeringbell Of course, and I'm aware of the dangers.

@NikeDattani That's good. Well, I'd be curious to see what people will answer if those questions make the election questionnaire :)

Okay finally I'm catching on the HNQ thread, I see that there was a 24 hour period during which there were no HNQ, and that might have been why there wasn't many new users at around that time.
@Tinkeringbell It looks like they won't make it due to the downvotes.
@Daniil Congrats on getting all your rep back. That's HUGE !!!!!!!!! And I'm happy for you. Sorry it took so long to catch up on the thread. There was so many messages constantly, I never managed to catch up properly until now.

user435118
7:26 PM
@Tinkeringbell I'll create an SE only email

user435118
@NikeDattani I have 3 userscripts running so probably one of them was interrupting the action

user435118
@NikeDattani Thanks :)

user435118
@Tinkeringbell Three sites have been associated: travel, english language learners, meta stack exchange

user435118

Yeah, @Daniil Congratulations on getting that back :)

user435118
7:32 PM
@JacobB Thanks :)

7:52 PM
From what I can tell, it was earned and well deserved, @Daniil. Really happy for you, man!
From personal experience, I can concur that child protection legislation often restricts perfectly benevolent behavior for all the good they do. :(

1 hour later…
user435118
9:11 PM
@ifconfig Thanks :D

user435118
9:29 PM
@Tinkeringbell Do you think making a Meta.SE post thanking SE is a bit too much?

Apparently "yeet" is an official dictionary entry in the Oxford Dictionaries now.

user435118
lol

"ORIGIN early 21st century: origin uncertain; popularized by videos on the former social media service Vine."

10:15 PM
Yeet
lol :)
