Q: Told from the point of view of an old man who lives alone and rarely goes out, written by a Scandinavian author

OlegThe chapters are days in his life. He's old, lives alone in a basement apartment, his health deteriorates as the book progresses and it's more and more difficult for him to get out. One story I remember was him meeting his daughter on the street or in a store (they weren't seeing each other on a...

My novella A RUIN OF SHADOWS (Yes, I'm yelling it at you. It echoes in the distance) drops April 24th. Very pretty cover art by @emcheeseman

What are the good books on autobiographies of scientist?

10:40 AM
@Akash.B Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman! - it's not an autobiography, but a compilation of interviews (monologues) of Feynman
And the next one, Why do You Care What Other People Think?

10:53 AM
What are the best novels?

11:20 AM
@Akash.B The autobiographies of naturalist Gerald Durrell are something else.
See also Hidden Figures--not autobiography, not quite novel, covers a wide range of scientists many of whom have been otherwise overlooked.

okay thank you

Seanan McGuire's "Incryptid" series is a fun set of novels about a family of fictional cryptozoologists.
"about scientists" is a very wide net to cast; what prompted the question?

for getting inspired

Inspired about...?

Scientist

11:34 AM
I think I could've guessed that. What kind of science--quantum mechanics, architectural engineering, child psychology, archaeological anthropology? And to what end--to choose a career field, to write an article, to design a game, to create a think-tank?

Theoretical physicist

Maurice Riordan and Jocelyn Bell Burnell compiled an anthology Dark Matter: Poems Of Space.
There were a lot of compiliation lists of books about scientists who don't get in the public eye a lot after Hidden Figures was turned into a movie.

Q: Why "Oranges and Lemons" supposed to describe child sacrifice?

YasskierThe popular nursery rhyme "Oranges and Lemons": Oranges and lemons, Say the bells of St. Clement’s. You owe me five farthings, Say the bells of St. Martin’s. When will you pay me? Say the bells of Old Bailey. When I grow rich, Say the bells of Shoreditch. When will...

@Bookworm Weird sort of cross post on M&TV....

Q: What was the meaning of the "Oranges and Lemons" song in the "Frankenstein Chronicles"?

YasskierDuring his investigation of the missing children, inspector Marlot frequently sees the vision of the missing girl Alice (or "Alyc" - anagram of the "Lyca" - "The little girl lost" from the William Blake poem) singing the first few verses from the popular nursery rhyme "Oranges and Lemons" Ora...

@Mithrandir I think so, because they also marked the book I had as "currently reading" as read

user15026
(And I can't play with the sorting of things I've read, it won't let me change it from the default sort)

11:16 PM
@Catija Not exactly a cross-post, I'd say.
There's asking about the original poem, and then there's asking about its use in other works.

I said sort of.

I already have a question here about the significance of that poem in 1984.
(Which is getting loads of new views, for some reason. I guess it's a thing people Google for a lot?)

@Randal'Thor 1984 gets used a lot in school so maybe it's that time of year? :P

@Ash Maybe ... it's been going on for a while though: 1000 views in July, and now over 7000 with no new activity.

O.o That's a lot!
