@RicardoAndrade I think analysis-tag is quite comaprable to algebra-tag. Specfically, there are in both not few questions were the tag is redundant. If the question is already tagged complex-anlysis, real-analysis, ca.analysis-and-ode then analysis really adds nothing so these can be ignored completely. Likely, also some tagged fa.functional-anlysis. When one starts looking in detail one likely will find some other questions were the tag analysis feels not really necessary.
Roughly, I guess only half of the question actually will need to be retagged. In any case, analysis seems very managable. It is almost only half the size algebra was when I started. For topology I did not yet look but I assume there will also be not few where the tag is redundant.

@quid: That is very useful to know. Do you think you will be working on the tag 'analysis' once you are done with 'algebra'?
Unfortunately, I have been a bit busy. Nevertheless, I expect I will be able to help with the 'analysis' retagging.

@RicardoAndrade yes I think I will proceed with analysis tag. I am happy if you also retag some. But also it is not that much work; it just takes a while due to the restriction of not retagging too many old a day, and me missing some days completely. Which reminds me I did not tag anything today.

@quid: Good to know that you will proceed with the tag 'analysis'. I will help when I can, then.

@RicardoAndrade Great! But also don't worry if it does not happen. There might even be something to be said for somebody "monopolizing" a tag. (For algebra, same user's questions on similar subjects, browsing the list I saw the question frequently and retagged some already 'mentally'.)
@RicardoAndrade But perhaps I could ask you for someadvice. I have no real idea how to tag this one mathoverflow.net/questions/76117/… and it is tagged geometry and algebra. So something "must" be done abou this.

10:11 PM
@quid: I would try 'dg.differential-geometry' and 'differentialforms' and perhaps 'exterior-algebra' or 'multilinear-algebra'.
There is also the tag 'infinite-dimensional' which might apply, but I hate it because it is not specific enough. Perhaps we should just create 'infinite-diml-manifolds' or something (25 characters is too short!), and slowly reduce the use cases for 'infinite-dimensional'.
@quid: Do you want me to retag that question?

@RicardoAndrade thank you for the suggestion! Yes, great if you would retag it.

OK. I will do it soon.
@quid: Also, a couple of questions:
1) What are your thoughts on the tag 'infinite-dimensional'?
2) Do you think there would be an advantage to having longer tags, say up to 30 characters? Do you think there is any chance in hell such a feature request would be accepted?

@RicardoAndrade re 1: yes it feels to apply to too different notions/subjects to be a good tag. It is somehow what people on meta.SO call a meta-tag (which are frowned upon there). There they promote as test for a good tag if it could reasonably be the only tag on a question. This one fails, in my opinion.
re 2: it might be convenient sometimes; we have some tags that are cut-off due to character limit; but also they are rare. I do not know if this is likely to happen if it were asked for. It might be less relevant than it used to be, as there are now the tag-descriptions so abbreviations seems less problematic. But matching in searches is remains an issue with abreviations. One could ask this on meta giving some examples we have were the char limit is an issue. To get more feedback.
re 2 cont. What might make this unlikely to happen is that it might be relatively an invasive change technically. But perhaps also not at all.

@quid: Re 2, perhaps I will try to write a question on meta asking for some opinion as you suggested.
@quid Re 1: That is an interesting test for a tag. I had not heard about it. Then perhaps I will add a new tag like 'infinite-diml-manifolds' to the above question. Do you think I should still also add 'infinite-dimensional'?
Or do you think 'infinite-dimensional' should be replaced whenever it appears?

10:31 PM
@RicardoAndrade re 1, in principle I think yes it should be replaced by more specific ones. But if it is unclear if anybody will do this somewhat soon it might be better to still use it for consistency. re 2. I just searched on meta.SO the issue came up there. I do not know yet with which outcome. I will read a bit and report back. (If they were completely against it, it might not be worth the effort to restart the debate.)
@RicardoAndrade there seem to be a handful of questions suggesting to expand length. The idea never really got much traction. I think it is unlikely it will be successfull if asked but perhaps not impossible either.

@quid: Thanks for the information! Regarding the question, I will probably retag it a bit later to avoid too many old questions on the front page.

@RicardoAndrade you are welcome. Thanks in advance for the retag! Yes, I just bumped three very recently so waiting could be a good idea. I will leave now. See you!
