@EricWang Your question on Politics was deleted because it's not a question, it's just a link to content elsewhere on the web. Our platform is not here to share information like Facebook or Twitter; it's a place to ask questions to dig more deeply into specific subjects and get objective responses. Sites, particularly sites like Politics, make an effort to be as neutral as reasonably possible, considering that people generally aren't neutral.

I don't want to ask yet another ignorant debt ceiling question, could someone just explain why we didn't hear about it while Trump was president, but when either Obama or Biden are president it's a problem? Seems like it's congresses' problem, not the president and there were Republican and Democrat majorities during both administrations.

@MartinSleziak are other people allowed to talk here too, or just you?

In any case, I do hope that American politics becomes a better thing. It'd be nice to see greater focus on principles and ideals than political identities and brandings. Biden's signaled an apparent understanding of this, e.g. in "Biden introduces Merrick Garland as attorney general pick: 'Your loyalty is not to me'":

@EricWang You need to relax regarding SE being controlled or having an agenda. You are more than free to talk, but assuming things are 'true' or 'false' by your own narrative really doesn't have a place on the stack or attacking the stack and it's users for wanting actual data and evidence is not a way to have an intelligent discussion.

The 2020 United States presidential election, scheduled for Tuesday, November 3, 2020, will be the 59th quadrennial U.S. presidential election. Voters will select presidential electors who in turn on December 14, 2020, will either elect a new president and vice president or re-elect the incumbents (In the event that no candidate receives the minimum 270 electoral votes needed to win the election, the United States House of Representatives will select the president, and the United States Senate will select the vice president). The series of presidential primary elections and caucuses are likely...

With the election behind us, I think the scope of this room can be extended a bit. I've renamed it to 'US Politics', so anything related to that it may be discussed here.

That said, Trump's election has highlighted the fact that a significant portion of the population doesn't seem to expect noblesse oblige. Previously, we've often held elected officials to a higher standard; this time around, there seem to be a lot of folks who seem oblivious even to the basic concept of having standards.

That's a weird piece to read. I mean, yeah, let's totally hold elected officials responsible for inciting their supporters to violence with "reckless or inflammatory language". I could see someone potentially arguing that such an elected official shouldn't be held criminally responsible, but I'm baffled by the idea that they shouldn't even face professional consequences.

Yeah, I appreciate that they both stood up to him yesterday, but that's after years of enabling.

> “You won’t work for me. You are not the president or the vice-president’s lawyer,” Biden said in remarks from Wilmington, Delaware, that started by denouncing the violence that marked “one of the darkest days in the history of our nation”.
>
> “Your loyalty is not to me. It’s to the law, to the constitution to the people of this nation.”

At least, then, it'd seem nice enough to take solace in the Left rejecting his corruption. Though the Left has often objected to far finer Republicans, e.g. McCain or Romney -- so I'm not so sure if the Left is in fact so principled in their objections to Trump, but rather playing much of the same game as many of those on the Right.

However, it's more difficult to find appreciation in the current American political theater. It's so hopelessly corrupted -- perhaps whatever corruption there was before, made so much worse by Trump's apparent push for "loyalty" -- not to the country, not to the law, not to ethics or morality, not to principles or ideals, or even to some notion of God -- but loyalty to his name: his brand.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that when Ossoff is sworn in, at age 33, he will be the youngest elected senator to be sworn in since... Biden (who was 30 in January of 1973). Does this mean that we should expect Ossoff to run for president in 47 years?

The news seems to be reporting armed Trump supporters storming the capitol building.. am I reading this right? Kinda wanted to check since it seems a tad crazy.

If the remaining states go as currently expected Biden will match Trumps 306-232 win

@trivialmathisdifficult depends if Biden loses at the ballot box or in the courts. There will most likely be protests whatever the result. I think 'civil war' would be a vast over-exaggeration, but then 2020 has been full of surprises so far...

@MartinSleziak yep - Representatives are elected for a two-year term every two years. Senators are elected for a six-year term every two years, so there are three rotating 'classes' of Senators. This year it's the 33 'class two' senators, plus two special elections for vacant seats in other classes.

@JJJ @MartinSleziak The thing about the German system though, is that it is very quick and simple to tell which party gets what percentage of seats but then a huge amount of maths goes into determining which individuals are actually going to represent said parties. (299 directly elected are determined immediately on election night, how it looks on the lists typically takes longer.)

@MartinSleziak Apparently, Germany has a complicated system as well. CNBC has an article entitled Baffled by the electoral college? Germany’s system might be more confusing. ;p

@MartinSleziak for predicting the electoral college winner, generally yes - 538 has a nice article on this.

"It doesn’t really matter if, say, Virginia or Texas is decided by just 1 point, because if either one of those scenarios comes to pass, the election is likely a landslide. Knowing the bellwethers in advance is arguably far more valuable because we can then focus our energy on watching who is leading in them — because whoever wins the bellwethers wins the election."

@Adamant Some talk about the US 2020 election. If you come across some election related stuff but you're not sure if you can ask a good question about it, you can ask here first. Also just to discuss about the election more casually
