@Magisch further, it's arguable that the only "legal advice" question here clearly falls under common knowledge you'd expect someone in the industry to have, so I think there's an argument that even the legal portion belongs on Workplace.

@AaronF Yes that is a different question, and it varies by jurisdiction, but another consideration is that there is a 3 year statute of limitations in the US for civil IP cases. As a practical answer, if the OS version catches on it will be quite difficult to put the genie back in the bottle. Downstream users may be exempt from legal action as they acted under the reasonable belief their source was open, but if the source is removed they may find themselves absent a dependency.
