Fate is basically a game about freeform roleplay plus mechanical support to help resolve things that freeform can't do alone. (This began really clicking for me when Lord Gareth basically pointed it out in this conversation.)

I think the honest best answer is SSD whooshing in, shouting "Narrative before mechanics!" and bat-grappling up out of the thread.

OK, so this website is pretty damn awesome. It's like a very smooth online reference for Fate and FAE.

^This. The rules of Fate are deceptively simple, it's applying them well that's tricky.

Overall I get a feeling that no given element of Fate serves a singular purpose, and any attempt to classify them as such would be falsifiable. Instead, it's a complex scaffold of rules and approaches that, miraculously, works.

Definitely though, usually being tied to a chair is gonna make running away a lot harder.

Once again, I'm impressed at how almost every new Fate product Evil Hat releases is measurably more proficient with the system and how to wield and present it.

Current thoughts on Fate after the above conversations: it's a game that's healthiest when you have a firm freefom roleplay with strong player investment in the story first, and need mechanics for assting it second. Fate's totally hands-off with saying how much stuff you can have and power you can have, and with saying how hard things might be; those things have to come from the narrative and the players' shared ideas of the world.

Give the player a chance to honestly be awesome.

The Fate GM is responsible for all those things, but doesn't have to create it all: he invites the players to participate as much as they feel comfortable outside the game, and the game gives mechanics for them to participate within the game as well.

....should I go through the text replacing "it" with "she" when referencing ships? This is an appropriately British thing.

That kind of skill will probably come with time and practice. Reflecting on how you could've done better is how you do better next time.

> Players are advised to limit their characters to 1 stunt and 3 aspects, but can have up to 3 stunts and 5 aspects. However, in any given session the number of stunts and aspects each character will have access to is equal to the minimum number of stunts and aspects any character in that session has.

So, a challenge. Stunts for characters that are narratively horrible at everything, while still remaining proactive and subverting the competence.

And Doppelgreener will be playing the plant which the scientist turned humanoid as proof-of-concept before he did it to himself (because he's not a mad scientist; you do tests first, and you don't use humans for testing!).

There was some kickstarter for Fate dice with themed graphics on them instead of +/0/-, like, a year ago. Apparently you can now get those dice just straight-up. Not sure if this is a regular thing or just the company liquidating extra stock.

I've posted in the Fate Looms blog and released a draft of the tabletop. It's not functionally super exciting, yet, because I'm taking my time in programming it correctly, but the first steps toward the full version are there.

I've written an Excel sheet for FAE NPCs. It can hold 8 mooks on a page, or 4 full NPCs. Here's the link to it.
