I think it's easy to lose sight of the fact that the Stack Exchange is a privately owned service that we've all been gamified into curating for free.

@mxyzplk described his mod activity as 10 minutes in the morning, 15 minutes to an hour in the evening in this answer:

If you have questions about the election process itself, please ask your question on the RPG Meta Site. Remember, folks stepping up to lead this community are committing a significant amount of their time, please keep all discourse civil and constructive.

The folks running in this election who think their time on the site wearing their new hat will be filled with lofty discussions of rules and policy are similarly poised to fail: the small soapbox will provide a modest amplification to their voices, while simultaneously providing a vantage point from which to view a thousand little tasks that they'll neither be recognized for nor ever see fully completed.

I don't follow this site particularly closely, but a couple of folks have brought some of the more visible complaints about mod activities to my attention... And the thing that struck me was that the complaints were extremely esoteric.

Ask your question into the void. The void listens.

In general the diamond should be validating that someone's doing what the community wants already, it's not an aspirational goal.

I have just now considered it and I consider it would be excellent.

Winning that election was kind of like getting promoted because Darth Vader Force-choked your superior.

For those who haven't seen, there are now four moderator slots, meaning two will be elected this time 'round.

Yes, well. One thing that any nominee should consider is that becoming a moderator makes everything you say get heard by the citizenry in a GREAT BOOMING VOICE FROM ON HIGH, in addition to taping a big "KICK ME" sign on your back.

@JoshuaAslanSmith I am excite about a primary, but I know that's mostly just because I'm an elections geek and it will be neat to see a primary has happened, not because I actually think it will be exciting. In practice I expect it will be an anticlimactic, predictable process.

@thedarkwanderer Oh, I know what you mean. It's deeply shaken my faith in the whole thing, especially as the second time since this election began.

It just sounds really bad, and I feel like I ought to ask about it, because even if I don't think there's any malfeasance afoot when someone claims malfeasance and then is disappeared I feel like I've got a bit of an obligation to investigate, especially when it's someone I respect.

@Mithrandir Thanks! We rushed to finish off a campaign about a week ago, expecting this, so the only cliffhanger'd be the baby's name =D

On a more serious note, those of you looking to be mods, be prepared for the shift in how you're viewed. You have a 50/50 shot of being seen as an antagonist by new users if their first interaction with you is an action on their first question.

Penalty for being a problem child: having kids of your own. Penalty for being a thorn in the side of moderators: becoming a moderator.

Mazes and Monsters is a 1982 American made-for-television fantasy drama film directed by Steven Hilliard Stern about a group of college students and their interest in a fictitious role-playing game (RPG) of the same name. The movie starred a 26-year-old Tom Hanks in his first major leading film role. == Background == The film was adapted from a novel of the same name by Rona Jaffe. Jaffe had based her 1981 novel on inaccurate newspaper stories about the disappearance of James Dallas Egbert III from Michigan State University in 1979. Media accounts differed substantially from Egbert's actual story...

@Shog9 The wild and crazy days of '12 still kinda shock me when I come across those questions, let alone '10.
Apr 24, 2017 19:42
@JoshuaAslanSmith The good kind of drama, yeah. (Grabbing hat from under the rapidly closing stone door nomination window optional.)

Cause I noticed that a certain person was banned a couple days ago and it was kinda unsettling for me. Like, I figure there's probably a reason and I didn't see the behavior, but it's concerning to me because we had just implicitly held up not banning said user as an indication that the banning process was working well and banning problem users rather than people dissatisfied politically with our current moderation, so, like, them then being banned is.... weird.

Q: What do moderators do here?

Shog9There's an election going on right now, and as a result there's rather a lot of discussion about the role that moderators play on this site. ...actually, that conversation has been going on for quite a while. One of the hardest problems that faces those hardy souls who step up to nominate the...

I think there's been at least two or three cries of witch-hunting that tried to oust @mxyzplk for simply doing his job, even when he bothered to go into Meta and explain his logic and reasoning. So you know. Be prepared for the possibility that moderating could be more than just another volunteer paperwork job of reviewing content, influencing site policy, and using mod powers responsibly. And That's all for my doom and gloom on another RPG.SE election.

I'm impressed we went from an election between only 3 people in 2015 to one of 10 already on the third(ish) day this year.

@KorvinStarmast That would be excellent. I hope we see him again sometime in the not too distant future so that we can do that. RPG.SE owes a lot to C.SE for its foundations.

curious on the amount of time a moderate is intended to put in during the course of a day? a couple of hours?
