The Hobbit is too much like a simpler, less carefully written, less well-imagined version of LotR.

(There are exceptions, of course.)

You asked me to unfreeze it, but now (well, before I posted these messages just now) it's ready to be auto-frozen again.

Although he's too much of a jerk.

There must be some minimal number of minds required to believe/dream something into reality. For example, in 1967, 35,000 hippies tried to levitate the Pentagon by chanting Aramaic exorcism rites (timeline.com/pentagon-exorcism-ae0aad1b55c5). It didn't work - but then you could argue they were only half-serious or were interrupted by security guards.

@BESW That's the trouble with being well-read: where others see a cool idea, you see something trite and overdone :-)

Well, the story is symbolic. Even if it blames it on some gods, it can still be making a statement about the people who propagate that notion in reality.

However, the big plot of the story lies in playing with the very contemporary American notion that winners need losers. The false dichotomy of for or against, either or, yes/no, is a toxic infection at the heart of the culture.

Currently reading American Gods. Enjoying the book, but there have been some WTF laughable moments, like when I finished reading the chapter about Salim the trinket salesman in NYC. Was that scene in keeping with jinn mythology, or just Gaiman screwing with our heads? I look forward to watching the TV series, but I must admit this scene & the one with Aphrodite swallowing up the guy in her vagina will be hard to pull off.
