Instrument of the day: Cello da spalla which looks like and played like a huge viola. Example: Prelude from Bach's Cello Suite No. 6 by Sergey Malov (from the Netherlands Bach Society's All of Bach project).

Consider the below arrangement of the beginning of "Twinkle, twinkle, little star", and try singing it. The second half of the segment should feel very strange, because all of the syllables are in the "wrong" place.

@MartinSleziak I find this stuff fascinating. I played around with SEDE a bunch when I first joined but then kind of forgot about it. Your queries reminded me how much info is in there.

@Lecifer In theory, yes, one could place words and syllables wherever one wants, including ways that contradict the normal pronunciation of the word. However, this can give a very strange sound, so would primarily be used for a special effect of some kind.

@Bass One of my long term project is to take up organ again, and produce recordings using Hauptwerk.

When I was still a church organist it's my yearly tradition to play a pipe organ transcription of the closing final chorale + orchestra, Wir setzen uns mit Tränen nieder, as a postlude for the Good Friday service.

@sigil @AndyBonner's post is really worth thinking deeply about. By reversing the question — asking what classical traits you like, then finding those traits in more contemporary genres — you'll probably discover a rich trove of musics that might not have occurred to you/us by comparing today to yesterday. Also, I second the suggestion of "Epic" music. Searching for that on YouTube will get lots of results, and it's definitely classical at heart — very much movie/game music in function.

We would never have guessed that they had it, and I think there's a very large cohort of people that go undiagnosed, partly because the history of autism has given the "high-functioning" cohort other labels like "asperger's," and tv shows and movies like Rainman or The Good Doctor focus on level 2-3 people who are more strongly affected or require more support, and there might be a large undiagnosed cohort of people who are able to "mask" and "pass" but who take more effort to do so.

So first of all, don't push yourself too hard. Social anxiety is very common among adults, and anyone who isn't prepared to recognize and make allowance for it is the person who needs to change, not you.

The chord practice tools are a bit hit and miss, I think - if the child really wants to learn chords then they are great, but they aren't fun, and at this stage you probably want fun first

There is a story behind all these: It was the colonial era in India, and when a British missionary (or whom?) approached his friend Muthuswamy Dikshithar, he had talked about music. After listening to and observing some chapel songs, Dikshithar composed some 'nottuswarams' (Tamilised version of Note Swaram).

The smallest of songs, yet they give a feeling as if you are in England in a massive concert hall listening to Mozart's or Beethoven's piece being played.

Hey there, just passing by to leave a small message to say thank you to the entire community of Music Stack Exchange. Thanks to all the useful replies I received to my questions here (as well as existing questions), I finally managed to pick my very first upright piano. And upon delivery, I'm still totally conquered. So thanks a lot for all the help I received (and surely will receive)

For both basic and advanced technique, The Art of Classical Guitar by Charles Duncan is complete and comprehensive. I would recommend every student of guitar read it.

So finally I'll come to the giveaway: The definition I personally settled on is a bit of a philosophical cop-out, but it's the one that works for me: Something is music when someone encounters it as music.

Q: Can you give me feedback on an interval training game I'm building

Dan BarryI'm building some free web tools for musicians and one of them is an interval training game. https://guitarapp.com/chords/interval-trainer The game is at the top of the page and beneath that, there are some interactive tools to explore how each interval sounds in the context of the modes. Overall...

Anyone have thoughts on ASCAP vs BMI? Does it matter what kind of music one is writing? A lot of web sites comparing the two talk about songwriting, but I’m composing works that are not songs.

Mysterioso Pizzicato, also known as The Villain or The Villain's Theme, is a piece of music whose earliest known publication was in 1914, when it appeared in an early collection of incidental photoplay music aimed at accompanists for silent films. The main motif, with minor variations, has become a well-known and widely used device (or "cliche"), incorporated into various other musical works, and the scores of films, TV programmes and video games, as well as unnotated indications in film scripts. Both a character theme (the "traditional 'bad-guy' cue") and situation theme, it is used to herald...

A few years ago I wrote: I seem to remember a story of Shostakovich being hounded by the KGB, and told to come to their office the following Monday. Shostakovich, knowing he was about to be "disappeared," spent the weekend getting his things in order. But when he went to the KBG officer's location on Monday, he found that actually the KGB officer himself had been disappeared over the weekend, and Shostakovich was suddenly free to go back home.

I'm a music theory beginner who is trying to learn more as a hobby. I have some basic theory background, I know intervals, scales (not by heart though), chord structure. But I really struggle with chord progression, modulations, functions and piece analyzes. Could somebody recommend a good read or youtube course or something that could help me get going? I'm looking for something more persistant and longer, like a book, series of articles or a course, compared to just one article.

A 'C', an E-flat, and a 'G' go into a bar. The bartender says: "Sorry, but we don't serve minors." So, the E-flat leaves, and the C and the G have an open fifth between them. After a few drinks, the fifth is diminished: the G is out flat. An F comes in and tries to augment the situation, but is not sharp enough.

A D comes into the bar and heads straight for the bathroom saying, "Excuse me. I'll just be a second." An A comes into the bar, but the bartender is not convinced that this relative of C is not a minor. Then the bartender notices a B-flat hiding at the end of the bar and exclaims:

Fascinating discussion/argument over the opening chord to Hard Day's Night. superuser.com/questions/1804661/… I had a Vox amp up & dialled in my Rikki 12 on the Variax & thought 'I wonder just how they did that' so foolishly I started on DIY guitar tab sites. After literally 10 wrong guesses on as many tabs this turned up in the search.

getharmony.net was a very interesting web page with a lot of tools where you could get the notes of a song with guitar through a spectogram and make a tab to interpret it. Unfortunately it is down, but I would like to know if there is an alternative that offers the same tools or if this page has moved to another domain.

Demostration:

It should be noted that I have already tried some alternatives with Capo for MacOS, yalp.io, guitaa.com and chordify, but it does not give me the results that I expect, since the song that I put does not have chord

Re music.stackexchange.com/q/130640/78419: This is a 21st-century song, but it definitely has American folk influences. If I had to assign it labels, I'd actually call it something like "indie folk," in the same sense that Sufjan Stevens or the Fleet Foxes are "folk" artists.

Re music.stackexchange.com/q/130466/78419: Yes, there is "good sheet music" and "bad sheet music," and many sites that are clogged with "bad." But the biggest consideration when getting music for a student is level.
