Q: ABCjs integration enabled on meta

Adam LearY'all asked for ABCjs integration earlier, and I'm happy to announce that we have something ready to test out here. First of all, no delimiters are needed - any code block that matches the ABC format should be replaced with the rendered version once ABCjs loads. It looks like the ABC spec says ...

Q: How could ABC notation be embedded in our posts' Markdown?

leftaroundaboutWhile it has by now been determined that music.SE wants ABC music markup, and the SE community managers have taken note, the integration remains to be implemented. A crucial point where this touches the users is: how can we best include ABC snippets within the Markdown of answers?

Electric / western guitarists can be recognised by the picks they carry everywhere in their purses etc.. Similarly, drummers by the tuning key on their keyring. Cellists are best recognised by the callous on the side of their thumb (but not much on the right hand, unlike bassists). Violists, of course, are characterised by often not making any actual sound when opening their mouth to speak...

Q: Which questions/answers would most benefit from music markup like ABC?

Matthew ReadThe conclusion of Should we agree on requesting ABC music markup now, unequivocally? seems to be a resounding Yes. As such, I would like to present our case to SE and see if we can get this done. And for that, I want to demonstrate more than just that we want it — I want to show that we need it...

@Hynes I think you did great.
Mar 31, 2016 19:11
@MatthewRead No problem. That's why I'm here. Some communities engage more than others. While Music might be a smaller community, I've received far more feedback and engagement then the other community I helped design.

Sorry for all the spam - I love it really!

@Hynes - don't think I'll raise this as a design bug, but the two tabs for all rooms and site rooms up the top right are the only thing that doesn't perfectly gel in the chat design. If I look at say Security.SE chat, they are red, like the send and upload buttons etc - and that works well with the blue footer and white side bar. The purple works really well in the footer, but just seems very slightly

We can probably generate a hand full of questions from it for the site.

@MichaelCurtis The site relies on people like you, who care about quality, in order that these judgments, in the end, "make the internet better".

@JCPedroza I agree - the high rep community (including us mods - I'm just as much to blame here) need to be seen to be doing this. Commenting and guiding - especially for new visitors.
May 20, 2015 03:00
But none of the closers aimed for improvement. The closers aimed for "get off my lawn" and nothing more. I know closers don't have the requirement to comment on it, that's perfectly fine, but it's still an important dynamic to consider when choosing what to do.

@RoryAlsop I don't think the original question of this example should be on topic, but I do think that most equipment questions have a general form which can be useful.

@NReilingh I agree, but to me vocal-range is like tagging vocals and range to a question like if one was inquiring about the range of a trumpet one would tag trumpet and range.

Maybe. Chemistry's spot in graduation was announced pretty early:

I'm really getting antsy for our graduation. Chemistry was announced to be graduating around the same time we were.

As long as I make sure people are aware that mods can be challenged without it being a fight, then I'll not take the challenge personally :-)
Apr 15, 2015 14:52
@MatthewRead that's lovely

The biggest mistake you can make in this business is to settle for "good enough" (unless you're writing a jingle for an advertisement), so pounding is a necessity for most of us.
Mar 20, 2015 11:35
@MeaningfulUsername well, I have 3 kids...moderating is a bit like a combination of being a janitor and a referee, so very similar experience :-)

@MatthewRead @NReilingh - as we have updated our on topic page at music.stackexchange.com/help/on-topic , I have updated our off topic close reasons - can you please have a look at music.stackexchange.com/admin/flags/close-as-off-topic and approve or edit as needed?

I see a number of answers that don't really add anything new to a discussion, but they do garner some up votes for their originators.
Dom
Feb 19, 2015 13:46
@mey Yes, but they are pretty rare as it pretty much says "I don't agree with this answer anymore" which 99% of the time means you didn't understand the content in the first place. You shouldn't up vote anything you don't understand which get's into the filter thing I was talking about earlier.
Feb 19, 2015 11:13
I personally don't usually answer questions that don't catch my interest or are outside of my field of expertise - reputation points aren't that much of a motivator. There are people who do spam answers for the bump, and there are enough naive voters who will give them the bump. That's one of the weaknesses of SE's model.

@RoryAlsop i know. Well, here it seems to me that a good community builds up that tries to be "self-reflective"

@RoryAlsop It does happen, in some sense. But also notice that SE communities are much more communities than e.g. yahoo answers, commenting on YT videos and other places that use both voting up and down. Therefore there is the will and power (sometimes) to moderate the site in a way that prevents extensive negative feedback.
Feb 19, 2015 09:06
Another related sort of thing I've heard described (not scientifically) is called "flipping the bozo bit": people tend to turn off listening to someone with whom they fundamentally disagree, regardless of the topic.
Feb 19, 2015 08:55
Really? Huh! OK, the lede gives the gist of it: Data Mining Reveals How The “Down-Vote” Leads To A Vicious Circle Of Negative Feedback
A classic theory of behavioural psychology predicts that punishment should improve behaviour. But the first study of online voting behaviour in social networks shows exactly the opposite.

@mey, I don't think I weighed in on that topic. My views on modulation are very pragmatic - if there is a good reason to go to a particular remote key, then there is going to be a way to do so, and it can be done quite quickly. I've done similar remote modulations, sometimes using only melodic means (emphasise certain notes in the mode, retire others, then shift), often in the middle of counterpoint.

Now, the 7th chord is used on its own, and doesn't need resolution, and "suspensions" are used without preparation (sus4 chords).

If you anyways feel you've been a victim of a serial downvote, then wait for 48 hours. If the votes are not reversed, you can flag any of the downvoted posts for moderator attention and explain your problem. That's the best way how to communicate your message to the mod team.
