Q: Why does musical synthesizer built from chain of astable multivibrator circuits get "out-of-tune" after a few hours?

Assad EbrahimI built a prototype keyboard/sound synthesizer using a chain of 13 astable multivibrator circuits whose outputs are connector to an audio amplifier chip (LM386) and speaker, all powered off a 9V DC battery. Each individual circuit gets tuned to one of the 13 frequencies in a musical octave (C5, ...

Hi all, a bit unsual question perhaps, but: Could someone recommend me composers that are primarily interested in the form of the compositions, before harmony?

I wasn't sure what kinds of effects would work well, and I don't need the "authentic analogue sound", so a digital multi-fx seemed like the right choice for me

This one and security are my easiest - communities that are very committed to the topic, and where there is disagreement it's not fighting, it's debate and discussion

I was going to post a question but it might be off topic as asking about a chord progression but if maybe someone can help me answer it myself by telling me if I can use an A7 (dominant 7th) as part of chord progression if I am in key of G major.

It's why I keep pointing to Boing Boing's forum. It's Jeff Atwood's baby, so it's not like no one here in SE has any experience with it. The natural indexing here is to tie discussion threads to questions - gets the discussion off the public-facing page, but creates a viable topic thread for it that can make for better questions and answers.

@Dom What Johnny has done is open a dialog on exploring new features to make allow for established members of the community to help new members better understand how to ask questions that fit.

No, it’s not a new flavor of Unix shell. Rather, Winter Bash is an ancient tradition of Stack Exchange. (2011 is ancient according to Internet time.) Here’s how it works:

Starting right now, when you complete one of 30-odd challenges while logged on a participating site, you will be awarded the associated hat. To notify you, an icon will light up on the top bar. In addition, admire your hat collection on the Winter Bash 2014 site …

I also forgot to mention that I got a noise gate to go after the compressor so I can turn the sustain all the way up.

Time for the 3rd annual Hat Dash! We've done it the last two years, so we will likely opt in again. Any major opposition?

I think we can call the site name change now. Music: Theory & Practice almost has triple the score of the next highest name (Musicians).

But before that, my other theatre is having me play bass in Evil Dead. And that will be cool because there's no bass part. There's clearly one in the cast recording (even credited), but no sheet music. So I'll have a lot of freedom in interpreting the chords from the conductor's chart. Should be lots of fun.

thank you, chopin, for reminding me how impossibly small black keys are when you want to press them and how impossibly large they are when you want to press between them.

@Tama as a musician your ear should be the one thing you use when writing music, not the "rules" - I'd like to think that musicians are allowed to use anything they want. It could be one set of rules, it could be another set of rules, it could be their ears, or it could be a mixture. I imagine that musicians usually do use their ears to assess what they've made, of course!

I like western music theory and notation because it's versatile, and having to relearn how to read notes simply to play in one style is more of a hinderence for no real gain.

@Tama I am very much interested in all music especially in atypical contexts like atonal. The problem I see is people pick and choose western theory concepts without looking at it at a whole and it leads to a lot of notation and conceptual problems.

@TheChaz2.0 An interval is two measurements: Distance in letter name and distance in semitones. E to A# is an Augmented 4th since any E to any A is a 4th. A# to E is a diminished 5th since any A to any E is a 5th. Both an augmented 4th and a diminished 5th are both tritones and they are enharmonically equivalent, but they are not the same thing. There's different nuances for how they function in harmony (diminished 5ths resolve inward, augmented 4ths resolve outward).

It seems like everybody just want to make there own notation for music and reinvent the wheel instead of learning currently used systems. Obligatory XKCD:

Q: How many semitones

AmorrisGuidelines Task Given two notes, inputted as strings or lists/arrays, calculate how many semitones apart they are (inclusive of the notes themselves), outputting as a number. Explanation of a semitone: A semitone is one step up or down the keyboard. An example is C to C#. As you can see below...

Just taking something from one genre and casting it in another genre is a great way to come up with ideas. Usually the bigger the change the better. Like if you took the first six notes from some Metallica song and arranged them in backwards order and had a string and wind ensemble play them, it would sound completely new.

@Nachmen to keep it objective, it might be better to ask what are the key differences between Finale and Dorico that way based on the differences you can form your option of it and see if any of the differences are appealing to switch.
