I have previously discussed gravity with my 3.5 yo as part of her being interested in everything space related. Now she's playing on her own when I hear the scattering of hundreds of beads across the floor. Me: Oh, what happened here? Her: I was playing with the beads and then the earth just pulled the box to the ground.

@TimurShtatland Your development on here is appreciated. It is positive seeing responses to comments (both positive and negative) that lead to improvement. I have someone on one of my other sites who is the opposite (reacting incredibly badly to any criticism, rather than working to improve), so it's very refreshing seeing positive outcomes here! Thank you

@anongoodnurse I do believe that SE is solely interested in their public image. They don't care about marginalized groups, they just want to give the appearance of doing so. Monica was a scapegoat. But they went too far and I guess law is on Monica's side. That's why they sit it out and have closed their ranks (every SE employee seems to have to remain silent about it). They won't explain it, they won't apologize, they won't reinstate because their lawyers dictate their actions.

What I learned today: I can place out the most beautiful fruit on the table / counter / wherever and it’ll be largely ignored by the minors. However, start chopping a colander full of small apples for apple sauce, and all family members will start racing me picking the pieces out of the pot faster than I can cut them. Duh.

A: Firing mods and forced relicensing: is Stack Exchange still interested in cooperating with the community?

Rory Alsoptl;dr - I mod 6 sites: Security, Music, Parenting, Outdoors, Sound and Video - I'm suspending all my mod activity on them until SE sort this out. I am just one voice among many, but I hope I add to the clamour. I have been hovering in TL hoping someone from Stack Exchange would come in with any ...

Well, my nurse-child on the Covid unit has Covid 19. So far, so good. They felt pretty poorly with aches and chills/fevers, but feel better today, so here's to hoping the worst is behind them.

Q: 2022 Moderator Election Q&A – Question Collection

VannyParenting Stack Exchange is scheduled for an election next week, 2022-02-14. In connection with that, we will be holding a Q&A with the candidates. This will be an opportunity for members of the community to pose questions to the candidates on the topic of moderation. Participation is completely...

@bjb568 We have discussed this on various sites, including this one, and the consensus is that it really helps retention of new members by making them feel welcome, so I'd say - yes, they are needed.

Oh the joys of Covid. Got a phone call from the school: Minor 1 tested positive. Then a second call: They somehow mixed up the test and he’s negative. So with all the adrenaline floating in my system I am equally relieved that he’s fine and worried about him being exposed to an infected class mate.

Robert Harvey was suspended for a year on MSE for asking a question. He links to the question here and the mod message here. This place is becoming scarier and scarier.

@Stephie Wow! What a super smart pupper (<3), and a good trick to teach him, too! It sounds like you're going to get there, waiting out his nerves.
Nov 3, 2019 18:45
@anongoodnurse But it's not enough for the broader public. I mean, there were no transphobic tirades or anything and the timeline is also clear. In the end, they fired her for asking about subtleties (that they later incorporated into the CoC...)

And I don't think the company really cares. Regardless of what happens now, Monica is out and won't get another chance. Her reputation severly damaged. Their fig leaf is that they will have to improve some mod firing process. And every criticism is and will be interpreted as bullying by a malicious, reactionary community so it can be easily ignored.

@TimurShtatland Thanks! I am finally on the mend. It only took , well, 18 months longer than they said it would. Them's the breaks. Ha, the breaks, get it? I have broken so many bones, I've lost count. I'm not even osteoporotic; I'm just clumsy, I guess.
Nov 18, 2021 17:42
And you probably are a pretty hardy soul. I'm not, but I rarely take meds, preferring to just push through it. My kids have seen me scrub out a deep, dirty laceration on the sole of my foot with a toothbrush and dish detergent until the wound sparkled, then I sutured it with a big needle (sole skin is thick), all without any lidocaine/other.
Nov 18, 2021 14:57
@RoryAlsop Agreed! Some people are dreadfully sensitive to criticism. Take it to Meta, etc. "Too bad, so sad." Is what my orthopedist would say. Unfortunately she said it about my leg pain! lol!
Nov 18, 2021 14:54
Stay long enough, and you realize votes mean almost nothing. Some of my highet voted answers were off the cuff; some of my best answers have much less than 10 votes.
Aug 3, 2019 12:02
It seems that SE cares less and less about their users and the quality of the content and more about its public image.

Auld Lang Syne
Robert Burns, 1759 - 1796

Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And never brought to mind?
Should auld acquaintance be forgot,
And auld lang syne!

Chorus:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne.
We’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

And surely ye’ll be your pint stowp!
And surely I’ll be mine!
And we’ll tak a cup o’ kindness yet,
For auld lang syne.

Chorus

We twa hae run about the braes,
And pou’d the gowans fine;
But we’ve wander’d mony a weary fit,
Sin’ auld lang syne.

Q: What are some good car-crafts for long trips?

CharleeSometimes on those long car rides, coloring doesn't cut it for a kid when parents are trying to avoid screen time. What are some good crafts that a kiddo can do in the car without making an overly difficult to clean mess? For example, slime is out, and so is anything with runny glue. I won't leav...

David Fullerton on January 27, 2014

This mobile thing will never last, right? We figured if we waited long enough, this whole “mobile application” thing would blow over and everything would go back to the way it used to be. You know, when phones were for calling people, and computers were for typing long, angry rants about how things aren’t the way they used to be.

In retrospect, we may have misread that one a bit. It turns out that even for Stack Exchange mobile is eating the world.

So today we’re excited to announce that Stack Exchange for Android is finally available for download on the Google Play store, for Android phones version 4.0 (ICS) and up: …

Perhaps if we had a question that we thought he'd have a personal interest in (such as the "Can a Stepfather and Stepson relationship work" question), it might go over better than just asking him to mention our site.

But how can I help her cope with the fact that doing the right thing and following the rules means that only she has to give something up and others don’t - without immediate negative consequences? It just not fair.

ROFL... so, my housemate made a comment about wanting my parents' doberman pinscher to eat a Dell rep. My 8yo asked why $housemate said that, I replied "he has a sick sense of humor". My 8yo looks shocked and said "a disease can malke you evil like him?!"

Sharing this was hard. Whenever I share something about my daughter, I show her (seems only appropriate). She & I teared up. I told her, though, that it is good that the bad things in our lives can help others... it is the best we can hope for. She hugged me and I recalled my own last line in that post. These things are what make me so much attached to Parenting.SE... the so-very-personal nature.

@Stephie - About masks, don't be fooled. True, social distancing is more important, and handwashing is mighty important, but so are masks. I don't know about Germany, but in the US, the primary reason the CDC didn't recommend masks right off the bat was because they were afraid of even more severe shortages for health workers.

PS, I've been out for most of this week and part of last due to our newest daughter being born a month early - she's in the neonatal ICU working on building up her lung function (after three doses of surfactant). I'm going to be appointing the new moderators most likely on Monday.

@JeremyMiller Age and even weight are poor measurements for whether a seat belt will really be appropriate for a child. What matters, from what I understand, is that the seat belt fits, both appropriately across the chest, and around the waist. If it fits improperly (such as the lap portion being too high, or the chest strap crossing over the collar bone), the child could get injured by the belt in the case of an accident.

@medica Sometimes someone here posts an answer I disagree with, and sometimes I feel they post something that 'attacks' my personal parenting philosophy.
I think you have to ignore something like that, and not start a discussion, it is super hard though.
I personally try hard to differentiate between something I a) just disagree with b) disagree with and find harmful/unhelpful c) a plain unhelpful or badly written answer. for a) the solution is to write a good answer with the opposite viewpoint, for b) it is downvote + comment and write a better answer c) downvote. (and maybe write a bette

Q: Moderator Election - Community Interest Check

Rory AlsopWe last had a moderator appointed back in 2018, and we have had a moderator step down, so currently are running with just 2. Now, the good thing is that generally this site runs without too much moderator involvement - the community generally has things in hand. That said, this is an opportunity...
