it's a pity, because I don't think “language learning” is a good name to attract experts

@ChristopheStrobbe We're kinda strict as to what is "on-topic". That, in addition to our relatively low traffic, is probably contributing to our non-ideal stats.

@Tsundoku At some point at Chinese.SE, I'd like to create a Language Learning migration target. I'll probably need your help describing when to migrate. I know the general rule "don't migrate rubbish", but I'm not sure if there's other traps I'm unaware of.

@Flimzy I admire your patience and open mindedness. Had already voted for you as a mod. Hope you make it.

fi12Language Learning is moving on to public beta! Congratulations and thank you to everyone who helped build this site from the ground up, and I hope to see even more participation, activity, and interest surrounding this great community in the future!

Interesting read about memory decay functions: dukespace.lib.duke.edu/dspace/handle/10161/10146

Over time I've become increasingly skeptical of whatever FI3M/Benny has to say. In a nutshell, I think his method of "speaking from day one" gives you a short-lived, but immediate burst of "wow, I can do this" success, but also immediately ingrains in you poor L2 usage habits - since you don't know what L2 sounds like naturally, you could end up stunting yourself such that you are understandable (at best), but unnatural.

Our site has been in beta for 981 days now. Unless I am mistaken, we will reach our 1000th day on ... 31 December 2018. I look forward to writing a meta post about that.
Aug 10, 2018 14:18
Folks, the tag resources is now deprecated on this site.
Jul 24, 2018 17:48
4k rep! And Chris only has more rep than fi12 and me combined
Mar 21, 2018 09:47
@Hatchet I think the low traffic is the most important factor. In fact, traffic has been going downward in the last few weeks.
Jan 11, 2018 11:19
And we have a fifth announcer badge on our site!

Hi folks! I am your new moderator. StackExchange contacted me to ask whether I was willing to replace another moderator, and I said yes.

Are we going to begin implementing what was discussed in this meta post and this one? I would love to hear more opinions on those topics.

If you're interested in Esperanto, I'd say one of the best tools for learning it would be Duolingo. While it's not particularly helpful for other languages, it's perfectly suited for Esperanto because it's a very modular language with very few grammar rules

We should really reconsider our decision about the fluency tag: meta.languagelearning.stackexchange.com/questions/444/…

Happy 3 month birthday to language learning!

May 11, 2016 07:58
@Quill And a lot of people don't like me... so :)
May 11, 2016 07:52
@DarrinThomas That's the right way to answer... and that requires critical thinking.
May 11, 2016 02:58
I would like to suggest that instead of making rules its better to provide examples of acceptable questions
May 10, 2016 07:05
@Flimzy it is an interesting question. After the first few weeks, I am not sure we really defined what is the site about, how we should go to answer the questions, and whether it is at all useful.

Q: Site Health: Where to from here?

QuillWe recently went into public beta and while it's a big step, we need to look at our next step in the journey of Language Learning: graduation. While the period between public beta and graduation is a potentially long time (more than a year, sometimes up to 5!), we should take a look at how we pl...

I probably earn a bunch of negative votes because I'm vocal about closing/critiquing low-quality questions. I probably piss a lot of people off.
Apr 27, 2016 23:08
@fi12 Yes, that's quite interesting... I don't think I've ever seen a PTM nomination that was so split, on literally every candidate.
Apr 27, 2016 04:43
Something like that. This chatroom is pretty dead so I don't know well that'll go anyway
Apr 27, 2016 04:40
I wasn't happy with the answer, so that's why I downvoted, beyond my opinion, no one else has given theirs so far
Apr 19, 2016 12:20
Shrug That's always been a POB sign to me.
Apr 19, 2016 09:51
some random person's blog isn't a valid reference, it's an extension of opinion
Apr 19, 2016 09:39
asking whether it's easier to learn one specific thing before another thing is gonna be opinion-based unless you can find an amazingly specific case where someone has written a paper or done a study, proving one is more effective than the other
Apr 19, 2016 09:20
@DanieleD It couldn't. I'm yet to see meta talk about tags leading to a flamewar dude.
Apr 14, 2016 12:26
and even in French and German, you have to pick different articles: for French you should pick the indefinite article because the definite article is gender-neutral before a vowel (l'), for German you should pick the definite article because the masculine and neutral indefinite articles are identical
Apr 14, 2016 12:23
by the way, the “-e endings are feminine” rule doesn't really work for French, it's technically true but only a 2:1 ratio, and that's including word pairs that have a male/female variant such as professions and animal names
Apr 7, 2016 08:51
@Quill There's no such thing as horrible rep. Least on a private beta... Rep means next to nothing at this stage... we're all working together to define the site, and make it a success. Success isn't measured by an individual's rep... it's measured by going into public beta, and later a graduated site.
Apr 6, 2016 06:39
@Quill: I've submitted an edit to the description. It's awaiting approval. — Flimzy 2 mins ago

Q: Allow embedded HTML5 YouTube video

Denilson SáCurrently, this site embeds YouTube videos as Flash. (see an example: How to unlock the achievements related to hidden areas in Portal 2?) However, this is not the best solution, as now YouTube also supports HTML5, and some users (like me!) prefer to use HTML5 player instead of Flash. Supposedl...

This is a general discussion room, but please feel free to create more subject-specific rooms (a single room with every possible discussion isn't very helpful)
