Attention all: What I don't want to have happen is that we post a ton of articles at first and then slowly fade away, as has happened in the past. I think what we're going to do is shoot for one post a week (the QOTW), with a second post at times. This will help us to stay steady, and not burn out. If we get a ton of writers that consistently write we can adjust accordingly. But for now, I'd rather have a backlog of posts ready to go, then post a ton, and have none down the road.

We're doing some blog maintenance, moving y'all over to a different instance. Unfortunately it means manually adding all the user accounts again. If you don't already have an account on blogoverflow.com, you're going to get an email related to creating the account on the new instance.

Q: From a quality perspective, what is better: turning volume up in the software, in the OS, or on the speakers?

QqwyIf music isn't loud enough, how do I get the best quality (even if the difference is in fact so small it's negligible)? By making the music louder in my music player, game or other sound-producing software program? By raising the volume at the operating system level (for instance, by clicking t...

FYI to everyone: the new integrated authentication system now works on the SU blog, thanks to @RebeccaChernoff's hard work. You will no longer need a separate WordPress password, you can just go to /wp-admin and will be logged in through your SE global authentication.

Q: The superuser blog is going away

Journeyman GeekWe've been trying to kickstart the SU blog again, and well, its mostly been tumbleweeds. We've had little no no activity, despite a few well meaning plans to. That said, networkwide, blogs are going away - there's no formal announcement as yet, though the writing's on the wall From what I've be...

@simon I'm assuming you want to be eligible for the contest, so unfortunately we won't be able to add you to the room we made for contest judging decisions and such. Let us know if you have any questions about the contest though and we'll definitely keep you filled in :)

These days, most PCs come with sound cards that are good enough for most purposes. Speakers have gotten generic enough that shopping for a good pair, with something to differentiate them, isn’t that easy. In a sense, if you aren’t massively picky, you aren’t going to  look very hard or far, since what you have is probably good enough.

I’d start by saying that sound is subjective – different people expect different things from their sound system, and look at different things. A pretty good idea when actually trying to put together gear for sound output is to decide  …

I do actually have time, just not much idea what to write about ;p

Hey @jeffatwood, is there any way we could get one of your fancy new keyboards to @JourneymanGeek to write up on the SU Blog? He's sort of our local keyboard enthusiast, and would put it to good use. Is there any possibility of arranging to buy one at a discount for him to do some awesome super user-ing with?

Ironically enough, we could have had a blog post finished by now!

Q: Is Zumba more effective than dance class for weight loss?

Nathan WheelerI've been hearing a lot about Zumba lately and I've been doing a little bit of research on it. From my understanding, many forms of dance can cause weight loss. I'm trying to find out if it is more effective than just taking dance classes. Obviously this would depend somewhat on the type of dance...

(Note: I actually suck at dancing. I pretty much look like a sea lion during mating season)

Also, IT shopping questions are always going to be very close to single-use. One person's very specific needs, that even if they're barely relevant to someone else's needs will be just that: barely relevant.
Aug 27, 2013 21:31
@somequixotic I believe you. We do like to do a quick check and make sure everything looks good, the formatting is right, there's a <more> tag (don't forget that!), etc. But based on your SU posts, I have no concerns about your writing skills.

Q: Why can't you have both high instructions per cycle and high clock speed?

dobusThe Megahertz Myth became a promotional tactic due to differences between the PC's INTEL 8086 processor and Apple's Rockwell 6502 processor. The 8086 ran at 4.77MHz while the 6502 ran at 1MHz. However, instructions on the 6502 needed fewer cycles; so many fewer, in fact, that it ran faster than...

Q: Let's bring back to life the now (somewhat) dead Super User Blog

KronoSYour crazy mad scientist of a Blog Editor is back and wants to keep this blog going: First off, I need to apologize. Like a terrible parent, I have abandoned my child. But no more! I have a little more time to work on this now and want to get things going. Thanks to those of you that have k...

@TomWijsman, hi, feel free to free up "how to make great screen recordings" for someone else. Have you considered doing a partnership with gaming.se as they might be looking at options for recording the screen during gaming sessions?

Guess that's what I get for being dead for a few months :P
