Perhaps interesting to read: How to effectively detect a rooted device on Android? - on Security.SE

@beeshyams Always pick the best candidate for the duplicate, time only matters if they're both just as good

As far as a guide is concerned, this seed question by Bryan is a good example of what I am talking about: android.stackexchange.com/questions/1184/how-do-i-root-my-phone

Q: Can we get the ability to ask questions as a Community User?

Ivo FlipseTLDR: I want to be able to ask questions that are attributed to a Community User, such that any high-rep user or moderator can seed his site with the questions that really should be on it! I think there's a problem across the Stack Exchange network with regards to the expected level of experti...

@DanHulme Then it is very, very unlucky phrasing. Title: "Is there an app …", body: "I'd like to have an app … tried out a few apps … couldn't find any app". It nowhere says he accepts any solution but an app. I don't recognize the explicit statement you're seeing there – it could as well reference to a "post-processing app". In fact, that's what it says: "post-processing software". So I strongly disagree with you. This might be a well received question on SR, but not at A.SE.

this room is for end-user discussion, not programming
Mar 23, 2016 08:27
Anyway, it'd be good if our chat room's design can be updated to Material design. Probably it's only me, but the current color theme is a bit too unsaturated/pale.

@all remember if you have additional questions, there's the election chat room :)
Mar 21, 2016 10:31
I can't deal with this election. Everyone is just being unreasonably nice.
Mar 20, 2016 23:56
most of mine I cast against my own posts haha
Mar 20, 2016 23:30
I don't think I would be unhappy with any possible outcome from this election

A: Flash a smartphone with vanilla Android ROM

und3rd06012http://www.androidcentral.com/why-you-ll-never-have-latest-version-android. I found this link on android central which basically explains the same thing that wayback mentioned as well with more details and comparisons with iOS and Windows Phone.I found this very informative so I though that it w...

@Izzy I am glad to see you nominated yourself for the open Mod position you are an exceptional candidate who's tireless effort and kindness toward others does not go unnoticed. Also I do hope that @AndrewT. and @Firelord throw their hat into the election process they are both upstanding candidates that could do a lot of good for the site. The more options in the candidate pool the better for every type of user voice to be heard.

it's not just bold text, it's actually larger and better spaced
Mar 3, 2016 09:55
I agree that the spate of low-quality questions is something we need to fix. I just don't think lying to ourselves about what the problem is will help in the long run.
Mar 2, 2016 10:36
It's just... hard to judge. Issue regarding WhatsApp web using barcode scanner is on-topic, but how to recover WhatsApp group's admin position is off-topic.
Mar 1, 2016 21:50
OK my friends: Watch out for the orange and red Ǥ letters in my app lists. Apps carrying that mark will most likely have issues without GApps. (I've just released my new Google Glue Detector to the lists :)
Feb 26, 2016 19:49
Basically, a lot of the time the thing that will solve someone's problem is going to be an app, and we shouldn't punish them for that. It's more when it's opinionated ("What's a good app for X") or looking for special features ("Is there a twitter app with scheduling automated tweets") where we have an issue

@FaheemMitha Maybe because you're looking at a postcard? Or where did you see Augsburg? #D

Q: Where in the file system are applications installed?

@Firelord Yeah: Android Studio can't find aapt in M preview "The build-tools binaries have moved (again)!" Who'd have thought that …
Jan 29, 2016 09:26
@SarpSTA Well, if you modify the OS you can do whatever you like. One example would be that you could add the suid bit to all the binaries in the system, so that any app calling them would be running them as root.
Jan 26, 2016 22:13
@Firelord Ah, good to have friends! – Wait, what? #D
Jan 20, 2016 11:25
@9re I'll create a chat room now. Wait for a minute please.
Jan 20, 2016 04:48
Personally, I don't think it will help end-user. Instead, it would be useful for developer to know, but maybe I missed something else.

Dec 31, 2015 12:55
@AndrewT. Please plz help. I want that hat badly.
Dec 11, 2015 14:17
@SarpSTA You need a disassembler to examine it, but you won't understand the output anyway. There's an open-source implementation of su you can read if you're interested. Android implementations are typically more complicated than those on Unix platforms, because as well as the utility itself they have an app for the user to manage who is allowed to run su.

I'm bookmarking it: Android without Google: microG, because I forget about my browser bookmarks easily.

> Before you download an app on Google Play (on devices running up to Android 5.9), you may need to give the app permission to access specific capabilities or information on your device, known as permission groups.

@TamoghnaChowdhury No longer: I've married 10.5 years ago. Sorry to disappoint you :)

FYI, I'm closing some questions about "controlling volume separately" as a dupe to this question, since from what I see, the solution is more-or-less the same (3rd-party app, custom ROM, or Android M)

A: Typing dialer secret codes in devices other than phones

Matthew ReadFrom adb shell: adb shell am broadcast -a android.provider.Telephony.SECRET_CODE -d android_secret_code://<secretcode> Where <secretcode> is the code without the asterisks, e.g., 4636. This is more effective than the DIAL action because it's direct and does not rely on the dialer to parse the...

Q: Poor User Experience?

Matt RockwellThe design choice of having a vibrant blue on top of a slightly different vibrant blue at the header of the site and questions is very jarring and difficult to look at. As someone who spends a lot of time on StackExchange this is by far the worst and most jarring design choice I have seen and mad...

@Izzy I've seen many users (including some 20k ones as well) on SE network using the word thread now that @Arielle has mentioned it, I wonder whether this word really fits on a Q/A site like we've got. This word is usually associated with post on the forums, so I rather try to not use it. What do you say?
Jul 12, 2015 23:54
@Izzy Well that's OK. It has been fixed which matters most here. :)
Jun 11, 2015 09:26
I see that the First Post review queue has gone down significantly from 400~ to 140~. Applaud for that and Let's burn that queue :)
Jun 2, 2015 16:22
@JonasCz Nope, that's a trademark™ here. If we take that out, we're in trouble and get punished (by all those confusing this room with that for Android developers). Sad, but true …
May 25, 2015 10:30
@ThatBrazilianGuy Usually not. And I can't help you with that, not being a mod – sorry. But as they usually follow chat silently (at least one of them), chances are good you'll be helped soon!
Mar 27, 2015 07:38
@GulamMohammed Not entirely sure whether that was the reason, but that answer falls into the category "link only" – i.e. you've just linked to a solution on a different site. So if that page becomes unavailable, your answer becomes useless. It's a rule on SE sites for answers to be "self-contained", i.e. your answer should at least outline the solution (a link for reference is fine).

Q: Flagging guidance

Matthew ReadWe just a got 6 flags on this "answer": sáng sadsadsadsafsafsafsafsafsafsafsafsa There were 6 flags, of all types. There are few things that make me more proud to be part of Stack Exchange than the outpouring of good will that comes from our communities during our “Giving Back” program. Each year we set this time aside to remember the organizations and people who need our help by offering to make a $100 donation to charity on behalf of each community moderator. It’s just a small gesture of thanks to our moderators on behalf of each community whose hard work makes this all possible.

In our sixth year of Giving Back, I started to wonder if asking Moderators to select their charities year after year might become somewhat routine and unremarkable. …

Hi English-language readers! This blog post is not for you; perhaps you’d like a hat instead? No? Well, when last we spoke of creating non-English versions of Stack Overflow, some of you were certain we should’ve gone the easy route and just leveraged a machine translation service instead of creating real sites for real people to use. I humbly invite you to read the rest of this post using the mechanical babelfish of your choice, and see if you think such tools can be relied on for important work… …

There is no better antidote, at least for the worst hours and eclipses of the soul, than to conjure up … serious frivolity.—Friedrich Nietzsche

No, it’s not a new flavor of Unix shell. Rather, Winter Bash is an ancient tradition of Stack Exchange. (2011 is ancient according to Internet time.) Here’s how it works:

Starting right now, when you complete one of 30-odd challenges while logged on a participating site, you will be awarded the associated hat. To notify you, an icon will light up on the top bar. In addition, admire your hat collection on the Winter Bash 2014 site …
