Another allstar that I think would be great and enters the election is @DanHulme.

One thing I find odd about this drive to close questions about cross-platform apps is that it's always about mass-market social or message apps. Nobody ever suggests closing questions about Google Maps even though that's also on iPhone and a website.

Agree with that. If there's a clear problem statement (along with standard post quality) even though OP asking for app, then I'd prefer to salvage it (aka generalize the problem, with preference to app). If someone answer with apps, OP's happy. If someone answer with different method, future readers might be happy too. Win-win solution I guess.

guys, please don't make or approve edits that use code formatting for emphasis or to highlight text

@Firelord that's a case of SCRAPER (read on MSE) with "The site [...] claims ownership of the content.", even if it's a mistake by them.

There you go when in need: android.izzysoft.de/downloads – all adb archives updated for Marshmallow :)

pro support line tip: never ask if it worked, just ask what the output was

@SarpSTA Yes, it could be any binary with the suid bit set on the filesystem. It's a special bit that makes the program run with the privileges of its owner, instead of the privileges of the user who ran the program.

Hey guys. We've often spoken previously about when users have the X-Y problem. I've written a blog post for my company about getting around it. If you've ever seen my comments on new users' questions, you'll recognise my recommended solution :-)

May I ask if the program flags something wrong (i.e. non-dev questions get flagged), please inform me to retract the flag instead of declining it, so I don't get flag-banned?

detecting blatant development questions would be nice

hey guys, I'm going to develop some automated stuff to do some moderation job on Android Enthusiasts - I need some ideas - what task could it start with?

Q: Technical UI bug on the Moderator Election page

parthu_pantherToday I checked the Moderator Election Phase and found a technical glitch. It's the side div stating the choice selection of moderator candidates. Upon scrolling the candidate descriptive answers changes but the choice made stayed there. But at the bottom of the page the div crosses the main div...

Noticed we are close to 50 K questions asked... Very close

@Izzy @DanHulme Yes moderator chat flags are confusing and not documented well anywhere I could find. Briefly: a mod chat flag remains active until dismiss is clicked. Clicking the delete button is an optional action; it deletes the message without penalty. General info in the FAQ at meta.stackexchange.com/q/271267.

I still don't know what to do about every question. The idea of moderating isn't just to review harder, it's to step in when there's stuff that can't be fixed with review queues

Good to know you don't disappear entirely, @DanHulme!

@Feeds That's right folks. I'm here to receive hugs.

If we could do something to make the harder questions show up only to Android developers on SO's HNQ list, that would be good.

This is the guide I was talking about, will save you time sifting through noise on XDA didgeridoohan.com/magisk/HomePage
Oct 9, 2018 02:41
@Firelord : Good. We will have two hands on guys with the device. This link is a good starting point for A/B devices and also see (not linked here) 1. Github page of Magisk developer which explains applying OTA (never worked for me but that's a fifteenth story) 2. A guide by Diddiheron (recognized dev) or somebody similar on XDA for troubleshooting.

@Oranges13 If you just want to play with creating Android apps yourself with a minimum of programming, then have a look at Google App Inventor appinventor.googlelabs.com/about the upside is it's a much simpler way to develop apps, with a much shallower learning curve. The downsides are that you won't be able to do everything you can if you program it all yourself, and you can't submit the app to the Google Market (but I believe you can put it up on the web for people to side-load).

I wish we had at least one of our mods in chat always, as we do on SR. Would have made e.g. this one a lot easier.

David Fullerton on January 27, 2014

This mobile thing will never last, right? We figured if we waited long enough, this whole “mobile application” thing would blow over and everything would go back to the way they used to be. You know, when phones were for calling people, and computers were for typing long, angry rants about how things aren’t the way they used to be.

In retrospect, we may have misread that one a bit. It turns out that even for Stack Exchange mobile is eating the world.

So today we’re excited to announce that Stack Exchange for Android is finally available for download on the Google Play store, for Android phones version 4.0 (ICS) and up: …

Why does every single web page should have its own app. Just implement a RSS feed, and every RSS reader will do :)

Also, if something doesn't work as expected, many people are fast to blame it on "some virus".
Mar 26, 2018 13:11
@DanHulme precisely to the first part. I differ on the second part, though: "vendors" use the term "virus" often to scare users into installing their (alleged "anti-virus") software. The term "malware" isn't scary enough.
Oct 3, 2013 13:16
@DanHulme I do sometimes think it's a pity that non-mods can't comment on deleted questions (even though us high-rep's can see them) I've seen questions before that could have been salvaged with a few helpful hints, but already deleted before I see them

Sep 17, 2013 16:01
One more hint for comments requesting the user to edit his question: simply placing the macro [edit] inserts the word "edit" linked as it would be the edit link itself.

@Izzy well transmitting across the 'net in plain text must save NSA some processor cycles, so maybe it's a Green Initiative on Motorola's part to save the US Government's electricity bill?
