Since both of those are actually questions about interpreting or identifying relevant rules, I have added this tag instead and removed the others. They are not adding any extra searchability or differentiation from similar questions.

Sports.SE has 27k questions, bicycles.SE has 89k questions. So there's a chance sports wasn't even a thing in 2011.

Q: On/Off topic - race strategy, from the POV of a viewer?

CriggieRecently we had a well-received question about why Pogačar responded to attacks from Roglič and from van Aert in stage 11 of this year's Tour de France. Bicycles.SE's [tour] describes our site's purpose as: Bicycles is a question and answer site for people who ride, repair, or build bicycles. ...

Jul 2, 2023 21:48
heh I am a mod over there. I'll raise it on our meta for a consensus.
Bicycles.SE has always been about personal effort in riding or repairing or whatever. So watching someone else compete and why they're doing what they do, is a bit of a gray area.

Whether it is or is not on-topic for Bicycles SE, is not something I think we can presume to tell you, either generally or in particular as a mod there. From your comments on the question there, it seems like you're leaning towards off-topic? Feel free to migrate and we'll tidy up, if that's your community consensus or moderator decision.

Hello @Criggie I think that question would be on-topic here. We have similar questions about other sports, not necessarily those that the asker even plays themselves, and are among our most frequently-used tags as well.

Hey all - I have a question about the dividing line between sports.SE and bicycles.SE
Specifically https://bicycles.stackexchange.com/q/89507/19705
Jul 2, 2023 03:01
Which side should race-strategy fall on? This particular example is one where the asker is not riding, so its armchair discussion, though it might be interesting to discuss where strategy falls if you're a competitor too.

(and to be clear, I'm not saying I disagree with striking or anything like that, not saying anything one way or the other honestly, as this just isn't something I am heavily mentally involved with anymore. If we had enough activity for it to matter, I'd hand my diamond to someone else at this point.)

once upon a time I was active on SO and meta and chat and would've known about it (and perhaps participated), but my activity these days is basically "periodically see if sports has any activity"

@JohnK.N. we have a tag for shooting which is currently a catch-all for a range of sports. I doubt we'd get to a tag specifically for this kind of shooting for a while, but as long as they're clearly about a specific competitive sport as you seem to suggest, they're on topic.
Jan 13, 2023 10:08
Thank you. That's a meta Q&A from the TGO and not from Sports.SE. IPSC/USPCA (International Practical Shooting Confederation / United States Practical Shooting Association) are sports where shooting is performed in a dynamic way. The sport has regulations, anti-doping chartas and competitions performed world-wide. IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Association) is more a defensive vesion of USPSA / IPSC.

A: Should we revisit or enforce that pistols are off topic?

LoduwijkThe answer by Liam is great, though I think we can at least give a guideline about what constitutes a "The Great Outdoors" activity and what does not. TL;DR This is a theoretical "Let's apply the same logic across the board and see what happens" answer, and that is exactly how I believe that an...

Hey, hi! I'm watching Miami Vice and there's this sport Jai Alai (a variation of Basque pelota from what I read). Why is this no longer a thing in the U.S. ? Or should I ask in the History SE?
Dec 9, 2022 01:06
Jai alai (: [ˈxai aˈlai]) is a sport involving bouncing a ball off a walled-in space by accelerating it to high speeds with a hand-held wicker cesta. It is a variation of Basque pelota. The term jai alai, coined by Serafin Baroja in 1875, is also often loosely applied to the fronton (the open-walled playing area) where matches take place. The game, whose name means "merry festival" in Basque, is called cesta-punta ("basket tip") in the Basque Country. The sport is played worldwide, but especially in Spain, France, and in various Latin American countries. == Rules and customs == The court for jai...

This question may have been asked and answered before, but do we know why mastermind_ed left?

@ChocolateOverflow Generally speaking, yes, the closer you start to the front, the more likely you are to win. The exact odds vary from sport to sport, depending on how easy it is to overtake and what the reliability of the machinery is like. In F1, the cars are very reliable and overtaking is difficult, so it's very hard to win from outside the top three on the grid; in NASCAR it's much easier to get a slipstream and overtake the car in front, so qualifying position is less important
May 17, 2022 14:18
I don't watch sports but I'm curious: in racing sports like F1/plane racing, how much does the starting position (in the front/middle/back) correlate with winning chance? Is it the intuitive "front wins more"?

At this point, I actually have my answer (fortunately, despite whatever network deal they've figured out in Europe, they are still streaming the IFSC World Cup circuit on YouTube + posting full replays).

Generally, it's an interesting conundrum since rock climbing/sport climbing are customarily outdoors-centered activities. But with it being included in the Olympics as a sport, there's more crossover between Sports and TGO. Not a terrible thing, since it's not uncommon to have things on-topic on multiple sites in the network
Apr 1, 2022 08:17
yeah, I'd've normally asked on TGO, but since it was less about the climbing/outdoors aspect and more about the organized sport aspect I was wondering if it would've been more on topic here than there

Ty for the info; it's often hard figuring exactly what's on/off topic when looking at a new site, even *after* perusing the help center & FAQ
Apr 1, 2022 07:26
Are questions about what methods to watch a sport broadcast/event on-topic here? I'm trying to figure out whether changes & broadcast deal(s) mean that a sport (rock climbing in this instance) will be streaming via YouTube as per usual in addition to other things, or only via another platform

It seems that the featured question Revisiting autograph identification questions is incorrectly tagged. At least if we consider ED_MASTERMIND's explanation that is for asking whether something is on topic and should be used for discussion about changing what is/isn't on-topic.
