@YannisRizos thank you for the kind words; it's faltering just to be considered, and with so many qualified candidates, this site will be successful no matter who is selected.
We now have more scope discussions than we have closed questions. Could everyone please stay away from Meta, unless there's an actual issue to discuss? The time wasted in academic discussions would be much better spend in creating and curating main site content.
1) being a moderator means that someone is in a position of power, and if someone feels that (for whatever reason) that a community member wouldn't make a good moderator, then they need a way to express that.

Some cultures simply didn't get around to organising their mythology in the written word until quite recently. Wars, illiteracy, invading Romans, invading Spanish, invading British, etc....
my impression from looking around SE and Area51 is that this should be a very straightforward beta; everyone knows what this subject is, there's loads of material to ask about, plenty of experts to answer it, there's no existing site that people are likely to confuse us with, and it's not one of those "weird" sites like code review or puzzling where they seem to be doing something other than Q&A with the Q&A format
