@MichaelE2 very, very unfortunately its true. Michael was such kind and helpful person and I was very lucky that i was able to work with him. He was such a great supporter of my work.

FWIW: am sure everyone can speculate reasons for downtrend (easy availability of AI answers, rise of other forums, general stack exchange trend (also multifactorial), as well as changing time commitments of users in an increasingly challenging world, etc). My personal reduced engagement relates to illness, work and (subjective) perception of less civility and good humour.

Q: Uploads to SE image servers have started failing

SamGibsonStarting around a couple of hours ago, attempts to upload images via the image uploader onto SE's image servers have been failing. This has been confirmed across multiple SE sites (so it's not SE site specific) but doesn't affect uploads in SE chat (thanks to those SE members who kindly did those...

I think only way is for WRI to consider making Mathematica open source, but keep the copyright of the code. This will allow anyone to help improve Mathematica. WRI makes money on support and services. I do not know if this model can work or not. But I do not think WRI will ever accept this idea.

Just learnt that I must be a "hipster" using Julia instead of Python or R … Must be Lisp-ishness, meta programming, 1-indexing, multiple dispatch, a great package manager, and simply need for speed. :)

@rhermans since you have reps over 25k, you can view stats at mathematica.stackexchange.com/site-analytics For example this chart shows the number of questions trends since 2020. And sorry to hear that you have to program in Python these days.

fyi, after one month of full time work, finished adding Sympy/Python to my differential equations test. Here is the result comparing it to Mathematica and Maple. I thought it did OK. Better than it did in integration tests against Mathematica.

Pointless trivia: release dates of non-bugfix Mathematica releases have been mostly Wednesdays (7 out of 9) in versions 12.1 to 14.1. (based on 12000.org/my_notes/compare_mathematica/index.htm )

Hey people, quick question

@xzczd speaking of Value functions. Here is another little strangeness. This works
DSolveValue[ode,y[x],x]
But this does not
DSolveValue[ode,y[x],x,IncludeSingularSolutions->True]
So have to use DSolve only when adding IncludeSingularSolutions->True
I never understood the need for all these Values function WRI added to many existing functions. For example output of SolveValues[x^2+a x+1==0,x] can be obtained using x/.Solve[x^2 + a x + 1 == 0, x]
Do we really need a whole new function to avoid using x/. ? But more functions is good for marketing I suppose :)

Question volumes on StackExchange are going down in general. This applies to the python tag on StackOverflow as well. There used to be about a question per day in the igraph tag, and now there's maybe one every 10 days ...

And so on. I bet if we go over all functions in Mathematica, and find which ones can be implemented using no more than 2 other existing functions in Mathematica, the number of functions in Mathematica can be reduced by half :)

@xzczd @bmf @JimB @user21 It turns out that the profile picture is the number 11 ball from billiard. He wanted to keep it and I told him that I don't oppose it as long as it doesn't become a regular thing that it gets reactions.

Those into differential equations, final build of V 14.2 test vs. Maple can be found here V 14.2 score was 95.211% and Maple 2024.2 was 95.840%. Mathematica seems to be catching up. But Mathematica is still slower. Not sure why. Any bugs found please let me know so I can fix them for next time.

Just a heads up for people using MaTeX: You'll need to upgrade to MaTeX 1.7.10 (just released) to be able to use Ghostscript 10.03.0 (released a couple of weeks ago). If you still see problems with version 1.7.10, ping me here or send an email.

The Drumbeat of Releases Continues… Just under six months ago (176 days ago, to be precise) we released Version 14.1. Today I’m pleased to announce that we’re releasing Version 14.2, delivering the latest from our R&D pipeline. This is an exciting time for our technology, both in terms of what we’re now able to implement, […]

For those of you that might wonder what I do at Wolfram Research here is a picturesque version of if ;-) wolfram.com/language/core-areas/finite-element-method hopefully useful to pass on to people that enquirer about FEM and PDE modeling.

@ydd Usually, a new version is released first in the Wolfram Cloud, and the desktop version is available only after a few days/weeks. 14.2 has been available in the Cloud since ~Jan 7th (it went on and off the first day, though).

for those interested, there is new ODE test report comparing V 14 and Maple 2023.2.1. It has almost 12,300 ODE's now solved from different text books. The score is Maple: 94.727% and Mathematica 93.327%. Will update this when Maple 2024 comes out also which should be in 2-3 months time. Normally new version of Maple is every March of each year.

fyi, for those interested in ode's there is an updated version of ode tests https://12000.org/my_notes/CAS_ode_tests/index.htm Number of ode's is 10,997. Both Maple and Mathematica improved their score from last years.

Maple 2023.1: 94.689%
Mathematica 13.3.1: 93.362%

@kirkus sure, will add a note here when done. Just finished installing V 14. It will take a while, as I am updating my CAS integration tests to use the late Albert Rich additional integrals found on his computer, which makes the number of integral over 125,000 now. Up from about 80,000. And this will take sometime to sort out and run Mathematica on them all. I also need to re-run Mathematica v 14. on my ODE collection which is now 12,000. I am sure V14 will have better results than 13.3.1

someone asked a while ago to let them know when CAS integration is done. There is new version here Congratulation to Mathematica integrate, it scored again the highest percentage solving at 98.233 with Rubi coming second at 94.217 followed by Maple at 86.609 and so on. 8 CAS systems were used.
