Both statements require some definition of what a "number" is, and what "infinity" is (and maybe what "is" is), and either statement could be true in the right context.

@Peter Referring to respected mathematical ideas as "garbage" is a surefire way to lose respect of your peers. I suggest you read more on these topics, e.g. here and here

It is a shame that this was undeleted.

@user64742 Please do not make this assumption. It leads you to judge posts on the site based on (possibly incorrect) assumptions about who is posting the question, rather than on the content of the question. Focus on content, not askers.

@MartinR The Math SE policy does not cover non-public tests/contests. But so what? Cheating is still cheating, whether or not the test questions are on the internet.

@rschwieb Or "illusionary righteous indignation is attracting upvotes, but they are not "quality upvotes."

Maybe we need a pop-up screen upon a user clicking "Answer", saying something like: "Just a reminder, please evaluate the question and its quality. Does it meet criteria foo, fie, and fee? If not please do not answer; suggest, in a comment, how the OP can improve their question, and only answer, if and when improved." Then a button saying "I understand and will follow these guidelines." I think if we did that, there'd be more justification for downvoting answer to PSQ's

@amWhy @AlexFrancisco @AlexanderGruber @AndrésE.Caicedo @Did @XanderHenderson @user21820 @JyrkiLahtonen @paulplusx or anyone else who asked why I left. Here is a chat transcript that might offer some explanations. I made the right decision to leave, I am glad I left. I am sorry to pollute CRUDE with this nonsense but this kind of stuff is absolutely absurd. chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/46998857#46998857

Btw, the OP has mentioned religious numerology (Quran) at least 3 times (in the question and in comments), so the question could be viewed as religious numerological spam. It can be rephrased without any mention of religion. What do people think about editing to remove such? Any idea if the community would the community support that?

@AlexanderGruber Maybe even an informal consensus among the community (not necessarily mods) could already be somewhat useful. The same way all experienced users know, that asking PSQs or downvoting others for revenge is not ok, there should be a consensus that answering PSQs is not ok. Currently that does not seem to be the case.
4
Jan 18, 2021 13:11
@AlexanderGruber One major reason why PSQs keep getting posted is because they are being answered. And PSQs being answered faster than they are being closed. Maybe one way to get more systemic change would be to discourage answers to PSQs, particular by high-reputation users.

@MartinSleziak HAPPY BIRTHDAY, CURED!! We're nine years old! Thanks to all those who initiated the room, and to all those that have since resurrected it!!

@lonestudent Probably nothing in the near future, because of the moderation strike.

People who frequent this chatroom are generally very well behaved if they get even an iota of evidence of sincere effort from asker and depending on their expertise go to great lengths to help the asker.

Minor announcement about GPT flags: Please do not hesitate to flag AI-generated posts. The mod team considers these posts low quality, and we do not intend to decline these flags, although they may be handled slowly. With that said, please do not rely solely on GPT detector tools, as they tend to not be fairly inaccurate, namely when producing false positives. Instead, please take into account other heuristics and use your natural intelligence. Thanks folks.

I had closed math.stackexchange.com/q/4707567/42969 as a duplicate of math.stackexchange.com/q/1003117/42969, it is exactly the same inequality (only that one variable of the three variables is set to 1). Another gold-badge holder (who answered both the old and the new question) then reopened it. I suggest to close the question as a duplicate again.
May 25, 2023 13:45
@Peter The question is closed. – It seems that answers with a positive score can not be flagged as “very low quality” ...
Jun 29, 2021 20:18
At least we can all take comfort we're not quora.

Jun 26, 2021 22:31
@JackGallagher the so-called inconsistencies are a lack of your and maybe others understanding of the rules. There were already explanations given. To simply insist strikes me as borderline bad faith.

present arguments in which the only logical solution is Quality Standards. Xander did us a huge service by posting the EoQS post; but he likely knew, like we often face, backlash from users who want the same old same old. Just something to talk about; all input is welcome!!

@JitendraSingh Yes, likely unfortunately, too often the bounty feature (typically posted by an answerer or the asker, awarding the lowest about: 50 Rep, have turned to bounties to prevent the closure of what would likely be closed. Unfortunately, while all this is happening, mods are rarely to be found. It won't always be like this, but I suggest is too often "like this" "mods absent from the most active chats, like CURED, and Math Mods' Office chatrooms. Perhaps we need coordinated flagging,

@MartinSleziak Obviously, it's just a way to try to get people to give enough time for certain users to earn rep before the question gets closed. If this continues, we're going to get Yahoo Answers 2.0. The long-established consensus on meta is to close questions that deserve closure as fast as possible. Criteria for closure has been debated, but not the attempt to close quickly.

Dec 2, 2019 21:01
@user You are one to talk, when 90% (or other such high fraction) of your rep is "earned" by answering dupes. Often you are self-plagiarizing, and then you have the gall to advertize those posts, begging for others to undelete them.

Aug 19, 2020 16:47
@XanderHenderson: thanks (mod team) for taking time to formulate the policy. On the face of it the policy may not look so appealing to those who want to preserve the nice answers (because there is reasonable effort involved), but doing this will actually help them to focus on gems rather the routine stuff and in a way it is about using their resources economically.

@vitamind it is very easy to create all kinds of numbers and ask whether they are rational or not (like $\pi+e$, etc.). Usually it is highly likely that they are irrational but it is very difficult to prove this.

Nov 23, 2019 14:42
And, why don't you begin to follow rules of the site. And stop answering PSQs and dupes.
5
Nov 23, 2019 14:29
@user Why do you bother? You never check for dupes, so you have no right to complain. Hint: proper checking for dupes takes 20 minutes or so. You often post homework answers quite a bit faster. And sometimes many in a span that more responsible answerers take time checking for a single duplicate.

May 28, 2021 17:46
@Arbuja Because I see that you are in here, and because you have asked a number of questions about this post of yours: the question is entirely unmotivated. Again, you are asking for a probability measure which satisfies a bunch of properties, but you have given us no indication as to why we might care about such a measure.

May 24, 2021 07:26
This is something that needs to be discouraged. And let me iterate that the quality of a question should not be judged by its mathematical level (or even worse by the quality of answers it receives).
3
Mar 5, 2019 20:36
@BillDubuque The purpose is not to dismiss 'knowledge in answers', you are correct, but there needs to be a balance between question quality and question answering. There are forums where low-quality questions are fine but SE is not one of them.

Jul 19, 2020 09:30
@sai-kartik That answer cannot be undeleted unless the question it is answering is undeleted. For that to happen, the question needs to be improved. If you are heavily invested in the preservation of that thread, then you are the one who should do the improving.

It is sad when FGITW extremely-brute-force "answers" like this get accepted, esp. when there are much better insightful answers. Is there anything more we can do besides downvote them? @Jyrki

@s.harp The culture of this room is that we expect folk to disclose affiliations with questions. Not that there is anything wrong with asking for action on a question which you have answered, but it is important to be upfront about it.
3
Jul 14, 2020 03:13
@JoséCarlosSantos Anyone can say "I tried". It means nothing when the "try" is not shown. After all, a cheater can easily copy-paste a question and rephrase a hint given as "I tried [insert hint here] but can't solve it.".

Apr 29, 2021 16:43
@amWhy There seems to be a vocal minority which is displeased, but the meta post currently has a rather high positive vote total, so I feel like the community, on the whole, is onboard.
3
Jul 7, 2020 21:50
@Sebastiano I have no idea why you received downvotes on two of your questions. But this room is not really the place to complain about downvotes on one's own posts. You can flag the posts, if you think the downvotes were made in bad faith. But this room is dedicated to requests for Closure, undeletion, reopening, deletion, or editing.

@TeresaLisbon I contest contest questions without context!!
3
Apr 12, 2021 07:25
@user64742 There is a better solution - almost all of the PSQs are (abstract) dupes, and the process of closing them as such helps greatly to organize the site. improve prior answers, etc. That's what I do in my tags. It's much more rewarding (both locally and globally) then closing as a PSQ.
3
Apr 11, 2021 21:37
@XanderHenderson I get infuriated when a one-sentence PSQ enters the "reopen review queue" and clicking on "leave closed" renders an audit failure, because the question earned 5 upvotes and has six answers, and weirder still, no close votes. Ugh!
3
Apr 7, 2021 22:27
I also suggested a rewrite, and further closure as a duplicate (assuming that there isn't already a good dupe-target out there).

Apr 7, 2021 15:48
@PedroTamaroff what is "misrepresents" supposed to mean? Towards whom? There are/were dual activities. Fact is most users don't care either way. You know when there was a clear way for the community to express itself? The last mod election. Th community could have elected Matt Samuel for instance. It did not. Lets not spin narratives about misrepresentation when a main proponent of this room was recently elected as a moderator in face of a clear alternative of a different current.
3
Apr 7, 2021 14:53
@PedroTamaroff Sigh, you undeleted and reopened a dupe of one of the biggest FAQs in ENT, and then added a dupe answer. Imo this is an abuse of moderator power.
3
Apr 7, 2021 12:53
However, at the end of the day, a question or answer needs to be judged not on the basis of who asked it, but on the quality of the post itself.
3
Apr 6, 2021 12:59
Also the answer to the PSQ linked above is bogus (unfortunately it is accepted).
3
Jun 6, 2020 23:13
@RithikKapoor the argument was that you do not even seem to be active on the site you express concern about.
4
Apr 2, 2021 19:20
We all need to flag more inappropriate, arrogant, demeaning comments, because mods measure urgency and degree of intervention by the number of flags they receive. One flag on one thing is essentially dismissed. Mods are gun-shy, drag their feet, and as you saw today, some mods actually support the trouble makers, but are more apt to go down hard and the "interveners", go figure. We aren't the ones doing what we do out of self-interest. That attribute belongs only to rep hunters.
