Software patterns are tools, just like any other tool. You don't ask "Which tools should I use to fix this roof?" Because if you have to ask that question, you don't know enough to fix the roof.

I am 44, working in another career. I've a passion to learn programming. I've goggled for what I should learn and my search ended up with these 5 things that I should learn:
Problem solving.
programming concept.
algorithms.
object oriented programming.
That should be learned before I start with any programming language. Regarding which programming language to learn I've found many recommendations that I should start with C in order to know how things being handled and to understand how memory being used and allocated and in order to learn how to write sufficient code that is not consuming a

As some of you know, @AshleyNunn has a cerebral shunt. This shunt has very likely failed. She is being tested and prepped for likely brain surgery. Please send all the prayers or good vibes or both that you can.

I like how people are perfectly capable of copy&pasting code together without understanding it, but then cannot for the life of them copy&paste the error message they are invariably getting into the question.

Q: Is this site about Software Engineering, or what?

Shog9I've been pondering these proposed changes to the site's name and scope for the past few weeks. This was, you'll recall, instigated by Ana's response to Rachel's proposal for a new name for this site.. Why are we changing anything again? The purpose of that name-change request was explicitly t...

They have volunteered to help us by adding a few lines of code to to their chat bot that will poll StackOverflow for mentions of users suggesting the Programmers site in comments. When it encounters said comments it will now start posting links to these comments directly to the White Board so that users can review and act on these quickly before a cross post occurs

A: (4 years later) Dear Stack Exchange: can we change our site name?

AnaIt took us a good while, but the Community Team has circled up and here's where we stand on your request to change Programmers.SE's name. We agree that renaming this site is a good idea. "Programmers" is an affinity group, whereas "Software Architecture" (for example) is an action and a discipl...

@ThomasOwens: I know you've asked me in the past to not flag questions that the community could handle, but I would like to make a small request. Could you spend a few minutes each morning sweeping the front page and the delete queue for questions that are unambiguously off-topic, and close/delete them? I'd do it myself, but I don't have a diamond.

The folks that are still here who care about such things are terribly outnumbered by the folks who won't read the site instructions, and it takes eight of us to do what the OP is unable or unwilling to do single-handedly, which is to delete his off-topic question himself.

Is it just my imagination, or did the number of bad questions on the front page just dramatically decrease since my "What questions should I avoid asking here" meta post was highlighted in "Hot meta questions?"

@Aditya For a point of reference, several of us in this chat room have been coding on a professional level for more years than you've been alive. And most of us have been coding as a hobby well before we became professionals.
