Also I've got a mother who nearly got a doctorate in English and I have a liberal arts degree. So, I'm a little picky compared to most.

@Karthik "You are a great help in times of need." I realize English probably isn't your first language but your usage is awkward.

@WorldEngineer That works sometimes. But not always. I'm thinking when the question applies to all professions, but different categories of people will have different solutions. Solving it in the best manner for someone in software is very different than solving it for the recruiter upstairs or the PM in the office down the hall.

Way back in 2008, we had Alexis Ohanian and Steve Huffman, the founders and co-creators of Reddit, on the Stack Overflow podcast. We chatted about a bunch of stuff, but one of the things they said that always stuck with me was that Reddit always took an explicitly hands-off, no moderation approach to their content from the very beginning.

I found that a bit shocking, since I’ve… never seen that work. Certainly on Stack Overflow and Stack Exchange we are very much pro-moderation — and more so with every passing year. We have literally hundreds of community moderators. We spend  …

@YannisRizos I had already made my mind up a while ago, following people's activities on the site, Meta and chat, my first vote was an easy choice. Also, I hope it will be considerably harder for you to get more helpful flags than me once you are a moderator ;-)

Q: Renaming the site to match it's FAQ or changing the FAQ to match the site name?

RachelI was answering another question, and realized perhaps I should post my answer in a suggestion on Meta Here's the thing: this site is called programmers.stackexchange, while the FAQ states that this site is about "conceptual questions about software development". Since a large number of people ...

If you really want obfuscation, make a language that is Perl but written with APL's typeset in the style of M. I promise you, basically no one could figure it out once written.

The Gopher protocol is a TCP/IP application layer protocol designed for distributing, searching, and retrieving documents over the Internet. Strongly oriented towards a menu-document design, the Gopher protocol was a predecessor of (and later, an alternative to) the World Wide Web. The protocol offers some features not natively supported by the Web and imposes a much stronger hierarchy on information stored on it. Its text menu interface is easy to use, and well-suited to computing environments that rely heavily on remote text-oriented computer terminals, which were still common at the ...

As I’ve said many times, the reason any Stack Exchange site works is not because of the magical software bits, but because the people participating are smart, talented, and willing to teach and learn. That’s right, any internet community ultimately succeeds or fails on the strength and quality of its contributors. Shocking, I know!

But while recording podcast #15 with Michael Natkin of cooking.stackexchange.com, I belatedly realized we weren’t making it easy to discover information about the smart people answering all those questions. Sure, we show the basics (reputation, nam …

Q: Isn't this a bug?

Saeed NeamatiHow is this possible to have 35 views with 59 answers. Yeah, maybe each person can answer twice. But hey, 35 views, and 35 vote ups? This one's from larger view:

Q: What are "algorithm concepts"?

Anna LearOur FAQ says that "algorithm and data structure concepts" questions are on-topic on Programmers. However, we receive "migrate to Stack Overflow" flags on a lot of algorithm-related question. This tells me there's a misunderstanding somewhere. Do we want algorithm questions? What kind of question...

Who would win in a fight between a Gorilla and a Shark?

OK, maybe you’re thinking that’s a ridiculous question. Perhaps it is. But various forms of this question get asked all the time. Consider this now-ancient Stack Overflow question titled Python v. Perl:

Okay, so I’m finally making the jump into scripting languages and I have decided to focus on either Python or Perl. The problem is: I don’t know which to cut my teeth on.

Most of my programming experience is in C, Java, and C++. There’s no specific task I would be learning Python/Perl for, other that possibly applying it to my dev work to make life easier in general. …
