The Skunk Works

To the optimist, the glass is half full. To the pessimist, the glass is half empty. To the engineer, the glass is twice as big as it needs to be. http://engineering.stackexchange.com

I come across the term "Responsible Engineer" when I look at engineering job descriptions on LinkedIn.
The job descriptions don't mention P.E. The jobs are in the US (not specific to a particular US state).

A mathematician, a physicist and a engineer are asked by a student what the meaning of $$\int \frac{1}{dx}$$ is.

The mathematician says it is meaningless.

The physicist ponders it for a moment and wonders if there is some way to give it meaning.

The engineer says, "Hmmmm, I used to know how to do that."

The two sites will likely have quite a bit of overlap on questions about the choice/application of materials (i.e. "which material would be best for X, given Y"), but that's par for the course on the SE network.

@uhoh also: I'm sure explosive bolts that use IHE (Insensitive High Explosives) are available nowadays, given the developments that have been made in that field

@dcorking I'm fine with leaving it in place. Can be good for a site to have "tough but valuable" questions that take a while to get answered. I'd rather encourage well thought out answers rather than "Fastest Gun in the West" style answers. So it's a focus more on the why behind the answer to a particular question.

@jhabbott I wouldn't worry too much about unanswered questions at this point. They can be great hooks to draw in new experts. Find a good, proper, difficult unanswered question. Send a private beta invite to a relevant expert who you know, with a precis of the question, asking them if they'd like to join in and answer this question that no one else can.

In full disclosure, I don't really like the overly broad "how stuff works" type questions. They're looking for discussions and overly long essays-as-answers; neither of which fit in the Q&A format.
