@uhoh waterjet could cut/drill it; unsure about small holes though

@uhoh I found regular FR4 quite good (not in space but in terrestrial UHV), but there are a few caveats: reflow air bubbles in solder should be avoided, flux residue MUST be carefully removed. limit heat exposure, so the board shouldn't be in direct sunlight. But outgassing limits for sensitive space instruments might be stricter, so idk really

Now I wonder who drinks coffee because they think it's so darn healthy :) Cholesterol aside, it's not particular good for ones stomach either. Me I drink coffee because I'm a programmer - an organism capable of converting caffeine to source code.

They were boasting AI built into their PCB layout software. I remarked that 5 years ago that soft of thing was called autorouter. Their response was that their AI produces the same results as an autorouter, but it looks like it was made by a human. AI makes autorouted crap harder for humans to spot.

I just wrote a little troubleshooting guide for general microcontroller problems in case anyone's interested. Troubleshooting a microcontroller that has stopped responding (And yeah it is posted over there, not at SE.)

@raspiduino Ask ChatGPT why. Too many people lately ask us to check answers they got from ChatGPT. I'm not interested in sanitizing ChatGPT answers.

@uhoh If using the ground for EMI also, use a wide braid strap (not just a single flimsy wire.) The bigger/wider, the better. Reasoning is, the wide strap has much less parasitics, resulting in better EMI suppression.

A star washer is enough to bite through the oxide layer on the surface of aluminium. An arrangement which consists of a ring terminal, star washer, bolt (or threaded stud and nut) makes an adequate earth connection. I see such arrangement in medical devices a lot (protective earth is taken seriously in medical devices, IEC 60601 and all).

@MicroservicesOnDDD At one stage for a short while I spent 10% of my time in China. That was somewhere in the 2007-2012 period. I've had about 10 visits. Plus 3 (or 4?) to Taiwan. There are a number of people here with more recent experience than me.
I have many photos :-)

But it seems like his latest suspension is an argument against a moderator position. I guess I should let it go.. But I really like Andy's contributions. I don't want him to be run off like Olin Lathrop.

May 6, 2022 03:32
I am a bit upset that Andy was suspended. His latest suspension feels like it was a dispute against "mods", not because he made offensive statements against members. It is a reasonable dispute. Here in chat, we can make reasonable discussion about his alleged" offensive" comments. Yet there is an absence of comments.

@EE18 So in general, the more sophisticated a transistor model you use, the more accurate an answer you will get. The problem is that as your model becomes more and more sophisticated, you find out that there usually isn't one "absolute" answer. There are many cases where you'll find that the "optimal" value depends on your conditions - for example, what is your optimal inverter ratio at your minimum design temperature versus your maximum temperature?

@ScientistSmithYT This is the kind of question that makes me doubt every thing you say about things you do and have done. No clue about simple power and current calculations, but you build lasers and maintain heavy electrical equipment at work.

@Jacobson123 Yeah as soon as you have wireless-anything you end up under RED with additional standards.
Oct 5, 2023 09:47
@Jacobson123 Under LVD it will be the electrical safety ones, not quite sure which ones that apply to 380VAC and the like. But also IP class, as in ensuring that nobody can point their fingers through the panel and touch live mains (very easy to test and self-declare).
Sep 26, 2023 17:23
@fpp The number 6812 could come from Motorola 68HC12. Maybe this microcontroller is a clone or a license build from 68HC12 family.
Sep 25, 2023 11:45
@fpp that is almost certainly a custom chip. Datasheet cannot be found, so it is likely custom. It could be very close, even identical to some other chip, but there is no way to know without de-lidding it and comparing the die to others.

@adamaero if you're building pretty much any kind of circuitry, you'll eventually find a 'scope worth it's weight in gold. Two things: make sure whatever you buy is FULLY WORKING, and remember that the ground clip is connected directly to the electrical plug ground pin - meaning scope ground IS Earth ground. (Many have vaporized a circuit on accident...)

Apparently, old-fashioned spark-gap radio transmitters are now illegal because they cause interference across a wide band of wavelengths. But, it seems like, an arc welder is also a spark gap. Anyone here happen to know, do they not cause an interference problem, and, if not, why not? Less power? It seems like, they look like a lot of power :-D
