Sure, plenty of people go a different way, but in my experience 80% of the young people from my church left faith altogether, whereas 80% of those who did theological training with me are still going strong. It certainly helped sharpen and refine my own faith, and enabled me to teach and encourage others today. I don't think I'd have come nearly as far in my faith without it, most likely.

In Conclusion: Seminary training brings objectivity and larger horizon. Every graduate will leave with a sense of what is the basis of their chosen interpretation / denomination and appreciate where other denominations stand in relation to their chosen one. Some they deem beyond the pale (like LDS), some are far brethens (like Catholics), and some are closer (like between Reformed and Methodists).

Agree that "context" is absolutely needed for proper understanding. But the assertion in OP (and I would argue, 1 Cor 1-4) is that the needed "context" does not extend past the pages of God's revealed Word. You conclude that "evangelism and acceptance" of gospel don't require scholarship (also agree). Then why would remaining true to the gospel ("that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ." 1 Jn 1:3) extend beyond that context? — C D B 1 hour ago
