I'm not a place to unwind after work, but I play one on TV.

General gentle note - can we avoid "preferred" when referring to pronouns? It makes it sound like my pronouns are up for debate or discussion just because they're not she/her or he/him.... and...they're not.

Please keep this room free of any discussion concerning the United States elections and events around them. Feel free to discuss politics in Here There Be Dragons. Be excellent toward each other in all rooms, as usual!

@JohnP ALSO, because it shouldn't go unstated: there's some major historical revisionism going on with respect to a lot of those statues: most of them were created long after the war, not as "symbolic attempts to respect the history of the war", as they are so often claimed, but as explicit, intentional, deliberate, and specific attempts to scare people of color. The "History" argument is kind of a falsely crafted narrative about the creation of those monuments.

Note: discussions about gender and sex (including discussion about pronouns) have the opportunity to harm others. Please be very careful when engaging in such discussions on this site. It is unacceptable to, in any form, denigrate someone's personhood or identity on this site. Knowingly and intentionally harming others in this way is unacceptable, morally wrong, and against the rules, and will result in moderator action.

I like people, more often than not. It's these systems that prioritize power and wealth over life and dignity, that have to go.

Prayers, please. My dad's condition is advancing, and while it's not related to covid, the world situation is complicating our care options.

@trogdor See that's smart, vote after the decision is made and you'll always be on the winning side.

and the orcs and goblins are an issue. it's not great to have fantasy races that embody real-world prejudiced views of african or native american tribes, including the part where the only good orc is a dead orc—that's messed up! but the use of their name is completely beside the point!

I saw people being clear and encouraging and positive, while being firm about boundaries and avoiding permissiveness. That was cool.

And just as a general note, regarding this room vs. the general chat: If you are worried that a conversation might be uncomfortable to some, that's part of why this channel exists; this allows there to be a space for conversations on sensitive topics to happen without forcing those uncomfortable with it to engage with them, but all the rules (including the requirement to Be Nice) still apply.

I am heading off shortly, but I need to make something clear: RPG.SE chat rooms are used by marginalised individuals, including queer and trans folk. I'm one such individual, for example. Calling people's interests snowflake stuff is not going to be okay—BESW has expressed the harm that term represents.

Q: The company’s commitment to rebuilding the relationship with you, our community

Teresa DietrichMy name is Teresa Dietrich. About a month ago, I joined Stack Overflow as Head of Product and Community. During my years as an engineer and technology leader I saw the impact this community and site has on people across the world and I am very excited to be here. While I have personally gotten a ...

Look, you can have a tense topic, and you can make ordinary topics tense by conducting them poorly. Learn from that.

@vicky_molokh That's definitely not the only action that she took that many people (including myself) took issue with. I really wish people would stop assuming that questioning the CoC was the thing that got Monica canned based only off of an incomplete transcript leaked by someone (likely) with an agenda. Just because moderators refuse to break the rules to "prove" claims, something that isn't our job or responsibility....

yeah I don't agree with a militant view of the coc. I'm trying to educate people but I'm getting frustrated.

one of the tenets of SE is "assume good intent." Unless someone gives me a legitimate reason to think they're acting in bad faith, then even if they request to go by a pronoun (not a title, as so many of the "ridiculous" examples are) that I'm unfamiliar with, it is my responsibility as a decent human being to 1) assume good intent, and 2) oblige such a request as best I can

The Blood in the Chocolate apology is also notable as a really clear, self-aware example of why it's important to call out bigoted content: if bigoted material is given an uncritical platform, new creators will think that's how how their material should be, too.

"Stop Telling Women They Have Imposter Syndrome" by Ruchika Tulshyan and Jodi-Ann Burey for Harvard Business Review. For many women, feeling like an outsider isn’t an illusion — it’s the result of systemic bias and exclusion.

(Of course, the unspoken reality is that singular 'they' is a thing, and adamantly refusing to use it really isn't meaningfully different than an old person refusing to learn how to use email when the rest of their workplace switched a decade ago. You're not really taking a "principled stand on the correct use of language", you're just refusing to adapt to a changing world—or, more precisely, a world that already was, that you just got away with ignoring for a long time)
