It's necessary enough when they ask. Right? And conversely, if they don't ask, then it's probably not necessary.

If you want to deal with sexism, the solution to that is not necessarily to refuse to acknowledge gender. That perpetuates a masculine bias and prevents opportunities to combat sexism in the field through contradiction of expectations.

Trolls will try to take advantage of any situation. If you suspect someone is not acting in good faith, flag for a moderator with any relevant details and we'll look into it and try to keep an eye on thigns. In the meantime it really takes very little effort to capitulate to a request to use/not use a certain pronoun.

@Xirema Yeah, but someone can specifically tell you to introduce gender into the conversation and not use they. That makes me really uncomfortable. I don't like having gender in any discussion that isn't specifically about that.

@vicky_molokh it's actually not about that though, if someone says they are tired of talking about the thing you drop it, especially if it's a topic tied to their personal identity, and especially if this conversation has been going on for,..... I don't even know how long at least a week

One problem with hypothetical scenarios is that, in my experience with implementing these sort of policies, people generally don't bring up hypothetical scenarios to try to solve any potential weaknesses. People bring up hypothetical scenarios to prevent the policy from being implemented.

This is especially important in considering that the CoC is trying to protect a very vulnerable minority and thus majority voting isn't necessarily the best way to judge appropriateness.

That's actually a fundamental principle in some of the administrative groups I've served on: opinions clash during the consultation, but when a vote is called then everyone supports the result regardless of how they voted. It goes back to that "If we act like it's the right thing to do then the flaws will become apparent; if we obstruct it then we can't tell what would have worked" idea.

It is just very troubling to me if a position of authority and stewardship is viewed as simple janitorial work, without acknowledgment of the responsibilities therein.

@BESW I don't think it is doomed because the premise is false. I think it is doomed because people disagree on how words should be defined (whether they are defined by how they are used or how they are intended to be used)
