Life is not a game of chess where you can think several steps ahead and predict the narrow possibilities and adjust for those too. Life is a game of chess with cats running across the game board and sometimes stealing the pieces.

@waxeagle The problem, at this point, is that a not-insignificant portion of the community has lost faith in the moderation team for reasons that the mod team seems to feel are irrational. This will poison any interaction that the community feels strongly about until either reconciliation is made or everyone involved leaves.

"We need more campaigns to get girls interested in STEM-track education!"
"...Why are all these young women quitting their STEM majors and jobs?"

And this twitter thread gives a rundown on the origin of imposter syndrome but doesn't provide sources; it would be a good source for search terms if I had the time right now.

My recollection is the justification was they liked the idea of people who didn't care who wore what makeup as long as they could cogently discuss the merits of various backend implementations.

Even simpler, I suppose, you can drown in a very small amount of water. Turns out this whole "living" thing is actually pretty hazardous.

I like Jacob's suggestion that streaming games should use their safety tools in the open as much as possible, to model good behaviour and make it easier to actually use them when they're needed.

Roses are red. Violets are blue. T. rex is the best dinosaur. My bite pressure was half a ton, I don't have to rhyme.

Handy rule of thumb for interacting with people who aren't machines: If the question you've asked is "Is this okay?" anything except "Yes" should be treated as "No."

over simplistically, they said something mildly (imo) offensive and we told them that we don't operate like that here, and then they got moderately upset about it.

And when we continued to mildly try to remind them that we don't operate that way here, they got aggrivated.

Do not insult or belittle the people who were made uncomfortable. That's not even a little bit acceptable.

Definitely the most realistic part of #Westworld is how everyone's afraid to touch 35-year-old legacy code for fear it'll wreck the place.

@Yuuki Elves go to the West, and just keep going. Every year, the Great Elven Migration completes one more circuit around the planet. The phenomenon is of great amusement to the other peoples through whose territory they travel, though of considerably less amusement to the elves themselves, owing primarily to the fact that for elven children, the "are we there yet?" phase of development lasts about fifty years.

@vicky_molokh I'm absolutely shocked this happened. Shog9 was the linchpin of the moderation community. We all learned a lot from him, and he was the ultimate go-to for almost everything.

the fact that (apparently) some of the mods claims against Monica were confuted by the Lounge transcripts leaks does not help. Again, don't have much details, but users are claiming that things that were reported to have been said weren't present at all in the logs....

It's just the repeated adding of heads where nobody asked: "so if everyone's doing the thing we're asking them to do for this hat, and trying to maximize their chance of getting the hat with no concern for anything else, will site processes continue to happen as intended?"

My point, which I don't appear to be making very well, is that I will react more to people around me, rather to strangers across the globe (yes, this chat-room counts as "around me" - my direct personal experience)
