So a tala is subdivided into angas. Each anga carries a certain number of aksharas. Each akshara contains a certain number of matras. One complete cycle of a tala is an avartanam.

@Aaron I would say that a matra is more of a 'duration of time' rather than a 'moment in time'. The sounds "Tha" "Ki" "ta" "Dhin" "Ka" etc. are called bol in North Indian music and sollu in South Indian music. Both words mean roughly the same thing: perhaps I can translate it as "speak"…
