@Wyrsa I think his susceptibility to illness was voluntary, as part of his broader decision to become incarnate. I don't think it needs a specific volition though.

@GratefulDisciple JP has never claimed to be a Christian. At least not in the traditional meaning. Why are people still acting surprised?

Saying that attributes belong only to one divine person sounds much more like separate beings to me! In my understanding of Classical Theism all attributes belong to the divine nature and so each person possesses them equally. What distinguishes the persons are only their relations, not any attributes.

I wouldn't want philosophy to override a fairly straightforward exegetical conclusion.

@GratefulDisciple Wait.... so, the catholics have this thing with papal infallibility... and it is just a totally unnecessary innovation? (how... satisfying to see it is basically a waste of religious effort and a distraction from God... )
May 1 17:43
@GratefulDisciple Or... Genesis 1-11 is history, and like other points in history, it unfolds in a way that is according to God's plan in order to teach us something. As always, you seem stuck on the idea that if Genesis has theological meaning, it can't also be plain history.

@curiousdannii @Wyrsa Talking about the ark prefiguring Mary, I found a good article on proper use of typology after which the author evaluates RC claim

If I were a church and my membership declines because of the quarantine, I would blame myself for not teaching them well enough for them to come back after the quarantine is over.
Apr 2 14:53
@Wyrsa Rather than using incendiary words, why don't you be more descriptive and elaborate on the "blatant heresies" you mean? Just because they don't have the same theological understanding doesn't make it "heresy". I hear a lot of fundamentalists using the same language about Catholic priesthood or about Mary, for example, which usually points to their ignorance.

How much does Death of the Author apply to interpretation of scripture? Are all the citations we see in the New Testament really in the context of the original meaning, or in "Death of the Author" fashion citing sacred scripture in a new but also true context?

Seat belt laws and traffic lights are a great way to teach Human/Natural vs Divine/Eternal law.

@kutschkem I think it is because people mistakenly think that voting is about "agreement" instead of "quality". And while agreement helps, I still upvote things like if a Mormon answers well, they get an upvote. This site is not about finding The Truth, it is about exploring "truths" and everyone asserts their version is "The Truth"

@ReadLessPrayMore here's a rule of thumb I've used when contemplating questions I might want to ask - if someone were to write an articulate response that addressed the question -- and I disagreed with the response -- would I still be willing to click it as the "accepted" answer? That's not a rule on the site, just my personal rule of thumb. If I'm not willing to accept an answer, no matter how well-constructed, there's a good chance I'm asking a stump-the-chump question.

@GratefulDisciple I have to agree with Peter. There's a huge difference between modern "science" that asserts that God is distant, uninvolved, and unobservable, if He exists at all, and the Scriptural teaching that God is intimately involved and that humans in particular were Created with extra attention.

@LeeWoofenden So you believe that... Do not ever use that construction with me, Lee. It's insulting. Ask me what I belive, yeah. Assert that, in that style? No. Do not. Ever.

Q: God as he relates to truth

philosophyisgreat123I am convinced that none of Aquinas's arguments for the existence of God are sufficient to proving his being. All of these have been thoroughly destroyed, underwritten, decimated by secular philosophers, starting with Hume, and then Kant, who argued that the concept of God must be believed only b...

This room has been relatively silent recently. Just in case it gets frozen, I will remind that moderators can unfreeze chatrooms - so you can ask some moderator (from any site) whether they would be willing to do so. @Wyrsa We're quite strict on how questions should be asked here, because allowing any sort of questions resulted in an even worse site. It may be frustrating, but by requiring almost all questions to be scoped specifically to one denomination or movement we're able to largely avoid sectarian arguments and fights. Answers are now evaluated based on how well the address the specific question, and voting isn't simply a popularity contest, with the biggest denomiantions getting the most votes.

> From the grammatical examination and the exegesis, the wickedness of magic is attested in the character, motivation, and goals that the practitioners of magic exhibit. Bottom line, magicians are described as those who attempt to obtain and manipulate God’s power to personal exaltation and pride.

@LeeWoofenden What I heard is that African and Asian Christians were influence by the charismatic movement, who are a subset of Nicene Christians. Of course LDS and JW made inroads as well. But I have yet to see academic evidence linking decline of Christianity among Europeans to Trinitarian doctrines rather than to other factors such as materialism and secular philosophies. If you can provide the academic evidence, your assertion will carry more weight.

So rather than focusing on healing specifically, we need a more robust understanding of God's providence. Natural means are still the work of God. Occasionally God feeds the hungry through sending manna, but usually through sending rains.
Apr 26, 2024 17:53
@HoldToTheRod ...and lazy humans prefer to type "Mormon" rather than "a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints". I don't think anyone thinks that means you worship "Mormon", any more than any thinks a "Lutheran" worships Luther or a "Calvinist" worships Calvin.
Apr 26, 2024 03:25
@HoldToTheRod I think the real issue is with barely on-topic stump-the-chump type questions. There's one particular user who posts many of them who I'm sure you're familiar with, and it's harder to know what to do with them.

E.g. @Matthew and I disagree on many things (but not everything!), yet @Mark has accepted answers Matthew has written that I would certainly disagree with, and he has accepted answers I have written that Matthew would certainly disagree with. There are users on this site who want to drown out competing views (I gather that is one of the things that @ReadLessPrayMore is calling attention to), but Mark is probably the most consistent user on the site for encouraging discussion of multiple views.

@curiousdannii maybe we need to update tag guidance (or even just add tags), but FYI re recent RLDS questions, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (lds tag) and the Community of Christ (formerly known as RLDS) are distinct religions.

Hello Everyone. Once more through the review queue. I had intended to post in this chat on Easter Morning a greeting, but I got caught doing a lot of RL stuff since we had people over. Therefore, better late than never:
Hallelujah, He is risen! 😁

SE has fired two of their most highly respected community managers. As if everything from last year wasn't enough, this is making me really think how much I want to be here.

@LeeWoofenden NO! you are not listening. You did not attack my beliefs. You wilfully misrepresented what I said, and you asserted something false. So yeah, by making a false assertion, you were in some way lying. Read my initial objection again. I dont' object to you disagreeing with what I believe or don't. I do not accept willful misrepresentation of what I say. That is what I told you not to do. The rest of it is simply noise and a wall of text from you.

@OnlyTrueGod Not really. Good editors understand that their job is not to express their own views, but to help authors express their views as clearly and cogently as possible. To write a good comment on a question or answer on StackExchange, it's necessary to grasp what the OP wants to say, and then make suggestions for how the OP can say that better.

Q: Acceptable comments policy for Christianity Stack Exchange

curiousdanniiAt times comments on this site have been misused by a small number of community members, which can be very off-putting for other members of this site, and especially for new members who may feel unwelcome. The mods frequently clean up comments (far more than we would like to!), but it may not be ...

Feb 3, 2023 09:06
@Matthew Bottom line is that comments on questions and answers are not for discussing and debating the points presented in the Q or A. They're mostly for suggesting improvements to the Q or A. Not "You should have supported this doctrinal perspective, but "Here's a way to say what you want to say better."

@GratefulDisciple must have learned the secret of Christianity.SE
Nov 9, 2022 15:34
@ReadLessPrayMore This site can easily be mistaken for a religious site, but in fact, it is a secular site, hosted by a secular company that mostly does computer and mechanical stuff, but also allows for sites about various religions. That is what this site is. It's a site about Christianity. Both questions and answers must be objective and fact-based. Scoping them to a particular perspective, such as Roman Catholic, can make this possible. See:

I swing by periodically and don't say much because I've pretty much withdrawn from StackExchange as a whole. I do want to say that in this most recent thread of discussion, I see people truly desiring to make this site survive against overwhelming odds. curiousdanni, Peter Turner, KorvinStarmast, TRiG,
GratefulDisciple... it's encouraging to see you fighting for the survival of this site, and trying to figure out how to make it work, long after I personally gave up on it. So I just want to say thank you for carrying on, and continuing to make it work.

@GratefulDisciple In the vein of dated IT church jokes, one day Abraham was installing Windows98 on his Compaq Presario. Isaac reads the system requirements and is all like Ohh man, you only have 4 MB's. Abraham, replies, "Do not worry my son, God will provide the RAM"

@冥王Hades Some caption would be welcome for those not familiar with Goku / Shiryu. I take it that you (being Goku) want to share your virtual victory against Shiryu? What game is this?

Not trying to come across as spam, but I'm aware of the discontent with SE as an organization and that several users have left as a result. In the rare chance some of them still haunt this chat (or someone here knows how to contact them), or if anyone here is interested, there is currently a proposal for a Christianity-focused community site at Codidact:

@PeterTurner @LukeHill This question makes me rather sad. Here's a faithful lady raising her children in the Catholic tradition, but for some reasons, the parish(es) she was going didn't help her to understand her faith, the meaning of sacraments, and also didn't provide her the social support she needs. This is a "use case" that you, leaders in your parishes, should pay heed to !

@GratefulDisciple I think you're using "theological notes" wrong

Heh. Let me fix that for you ("you" = the author): "Anti-abortion Christians will not be persuaded by militant athiesm, arguments of pragmatism, or what militant atheists call 'ethics'." Yup, that's better. Now, is anyone really surprised by that sentence? No? That's what I thought...
