@Old_Lamplighter I can think of many examples where "everybody believes X" turned out to be wrong in the end. But that's not what I'm talking about. I actually find it very likely that the general idea is very true.

If you phrased that part of your answer like you did here "in X years in the field, talking with lots of people, etc. I found Y to be true in most cases" that's perfectly fine.

My problem is solely with throwing around specific statistics such as that 80% number to give the answer a veneer of science and objectivity. If you cite statistics you should be able to quote the sourc

@Old_Lamplighter Your answer isn't right or wrong your answer is simply unverifiable. You most likely simply fell prey to selection bias in your own experience.
Just think about it: Who is going to talk about counter offers those with bad experiences or those for whom it went alright? If I use questions on workplace as an example I could easily come up with the idea that 99.9% of almost anything leads to bad outcomes, because if everything is alright nobody is going to write a question about it.
