(which is a way better way to frame it. it's not cancel culture. it's accountability culture, it's consequence culture. we're busy being a world in which rich and famous people can't get away with heinous abuse and bigotry on account of being rich and famous—we're building a world in which they face accountability and consequences just like the rest of us. that's a good thing.)

@AndrasDeak i think that's the right approach. frying might be an art, but baking is a science

Don't forget there's a difference between doing something visibly and actually doing something helpful.

So, I'm kind of frustrated at how the discussion's been going when it's come up.
- It's focused on moderator team size, not moderator team activity and capacity.
- I keep seeing people discuss the moderator team size like it's the whole community's to determine the size or when mods are needed. We already discussed this, it's nonfunctional for the community to determine this.
- The activity levels of Rubiksmoose keeps getting brought up. Name no names all you like, that's the moderator who's been getting mentioned. This is inside the purview of the diamond moderation team's self-management.

@NautArch This isn't a thing where we told the CMs "Hey, our quota is 4 now." We just asked the CMs: "hey, let's have an election for two slots, please." We can request any number of slots, and team size can go up or down.

@Cooper genetics is really weird if it even affects your brother's girlfriend!

There's a glorious episode in s5 of SHIELD where they dramatically say "Release the ferrets"

When a group of people is standing around in a mall or other public space and ignoring the flow of people they just interrupted that's something that actually really annoys me
Aug 23, 2021 20:03
It's more like I have a need to protect my personal space and strangers walking around are a lot more blase about both thier own personal space and mine
Aug 23, 2021 04:32
so I have an unrealistic fear that if I annoy someone a little briefly they will react completely disproportionately in a way I can't predict every time

It is also difficult to convey, remember, and follow that clinical trials are not about treating the people that participate really. Heck, they're not even about the papers that get written up in the trials wake. It is and should be about the multitudes of humans that will exist long after the research is done, the researchers and patients are past, and the papers aren't even cited anymore.

It's wonderful to be able to mentor young people like that. I'm essentially the only LGBTQ+ individual in my extended and close family right now (that I know of), so when my younger friends come to me for help on working through their feelings it's wonderful to feel like I'm helping people start that journey of self-confidence and discovery.

@BardicWizard this is such a wonderful story T_T

@ThomasMarkov Potato guns are firearms in my state, but gauss cannons aren't.

My view is that the more we 'upvote' negative discourse because we agree with sentiment, then the more we approve of that sort of communication.
Jul 20, 2021 16:20
And for me, it's more important we fix our communication with each other before doing anything else.
Jul 20, 2021 16:16
Yeah, I don’t think “I’m right you’re wrong” is an unhealthy attitude here. The unhealthy attitude that I’ve seen put forward is more like “I’m right, and you’re wrong, and you being wrong is the worst thing thats ever happened to the stack”.

If you've been told to drop something and the stuff gets moved to chat, please listen. It means you've already crossed the line, and it's time to correct course rapidly

1973–1997 "TSR": Merged into WotC
2011–2020 "TSR Games": Still operating as a company, but must find a new name
2020+ "TSR": Still going

I am going to lay down as room owner that the above conversation is over and is to move on. This is a room designated for the RPG.SE to engage in difficult topics, it is not a place for someone to name and shame over personal conflicts. As far as I'm concerned, this conversation has amounted to building mountains out of a single molehill.
Jun 26, 2021 01:33
...however, my polite requests for clarification did not give the desired result and my voice was ignored, hence the escalation. If someone is damaging my reputation like this, I consider we are not in the phase of being friendly and polite anymore. But I did not get any response either; instead, my name was brought up in this chat room and misrepresented with such a context, that other people started responding with ...
Jun 25, 2021 21:32
i'd like to have a word with whoever came up with that unfair generalisation, and what their take is on the previous generations who would strike up conversations with strangers just to have some conversation avialable and how that might be seen as a constant thirst for external feedback and verification

@lila What would you like me to complain about? Stars in a litter box? Okay. I was first a bit put out when I noticed the five, six, and seven pointed buggers in and amongst the grey poopy pebbles. Like, what the heck is going on here! Who TF stars a litter box?
Jun 25, 2021 13:23
Stars are useful for users who come in well after a conversation, as a pointer to what's come before. So if someone makes a really interesting point, or asks a question that's likely to draw good responses in a long tail, those are useful to star for later readers to come by and see.
Jun 24, 2021 20:18
@AndrasDeak Huh, the star usage there is rather different to what we're used to around here (that's ok, that culture varies). And if it comes to moving, I'd probably land on moving this whole convo to its own room. I don't see that warranted yet, but am not gonna oppose anyone if they feel like that's the call
Jun 19, 2021 20:44
I agree, but I also think tourists can come in to the experience with particular expectations and not bother to correct them even given the opportunity
May 27, 2021 08:56
I don't think shaming people is pretty much ever the right way to progress
May 25, 2021 15:10
No joking: as a small kid, due to Simpsons being yellow, having "cracked" edges (eg. with Bart's hair) and the word sounding a bit similar to one of the Finnish words for potato chips, I thought the Simpsons were supposed to be anthropomorphic potato chips.
May 20, 2021 14:08
On the internet, sadly, my expectations are that "everything exists", especially if it's bad.
May 19, 2021 17:24
The community is always going to be changing, and we have to be okay with that because we can't stop it.

@BESW regale us in tales of snakes in all the wrong places
Apr 19, 2021 10:36
They may, but anyone who disagree with the status quo is gonna be more incentivised to vote on it, and that includes drivebys who aren't part of the community doing the moderation and curation which it related to. So then it becomes hard to trust the votes as representative of the community
Apr 19, 2021 09:48
The unfortunate reality is that whenever it is a moderator action/proposal/etc. , the weight of that action is different from what a regular user carries (some users opinions might carry more weight due to their reputation).
Apr 19, 2021 04:24
We navigate this kind of linguistic multiplicity every day.
Apr 17, 2021 18:47
As far as I see it, the goal is for that to be as useful as possible, and both long comment chains and lots of answers on the same topic diminish that. So finding the compromise between stating something in a comment and talking past eachother in answer isn't trivial

At the core of all things that you are outlining is how we do politics on meta.
Mar 16, 2021 18:12
we are not a data-driven community
Mar 16, 2021 18:06
I think if we're going to create an exception-based discussion system, we should be clear as to what constitutes an exception.
Mar 16, 2021 15:52
I'm mostly spitballing here, so valid counters I am more than open to. It just seems like guidelines/policy are more of what the community actually does and not what may be a guideline/stack policy about how to do things.

Jan 29, 2021 02:31
@MarkWells I think that's a really good point, just in general: bad deeds do not condemn us so much as how we take responsibility for them.

The poem is titled "The Hill We Climb," which seems to not be mentioned as much as maybe it should, since knowing the title makes it easier to, you know. find.

But I think the point that really needs to be addressed, if youre already in the review queue doing the review, why are you performing the wrong review action?
